No free suitcase on domestic US Avios flight redemptions – and what to do

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I don’t know if this is a new policy or if it is simply a coincidence.  However, two Head for Points readers contacted me recently to make the same observation.

Economy Avios redemptions on US Airways and American Airlines for domestic travel no longer come with any free checked luggage allowance.  None at all.

This is, to be fair, made clear on ba.com when you book although it is easily overlooked if you don’t normally read the baggage rules.

US Airways American Airlines

Here is an example:

New York to Boston, 4500 Avios + £3.60 tax on American or US Airways

Baggage allowance: “Hand baggage only fare. No checked baggage allowance.”

When you click the link to the AA website, you see that your first suitcase will cost $25, the 2nd $35 and the 3rd a shocking $150.

Looking at this page, a BA Bronze (oneworld Ruby) gets one free bag, a BA Silver two free bags and a BA Gold three free bags.

There is a way around this – book a business class or first class redemption.  Note that some US domestic flights are two class aircraft but sold as Economy and First – and that British Airways treats the premium cabin as a First Class redemption and prices it accordingly.

A First Class redemption between New York and Boston will cost 18,000 Avios + £3.60 one way.  However, a First Class ticket comes with THREE free pieces of checked luggage.

Given that you will have to pay for your luggage if you book in economy, I would be tempted to book First Class if I had no airline status and was checking in multiple bags.   If there are two of you, perhaps one flies in economy for 4,500 Avios with hand baggage whilst the other books into First for 18,000 Avios and checks in two or three cases for free?

This is not a no-brainer decision – if you are not ‘Avios heavy’ then you may still prefer to conserve your miles and pay the baggage fees.  Part of it will depend on whether your domestic flight is two-class (so your only option is First) or three-class (where you could book into Business for fewer Avios and still get two pieces of luggage).

  • Laurence Dalby says:

I travelled on an economy reward flight in February this year on American Eagle and had seen we would have to pay for bags, when we got to check in I was expecting them to ask for the money but they didn’t. I was Cathay Gold at the time so maybe this meant I got baggage free?

    • Mark says:

Yes, Cathay Gold would get you free checked bags.

      • Caffers says:

At least it should do – as per earlier post I flew AA Economy redemption between LAX & DC in March this year and the LAX check in staff were unable to process the Cathay Gold and allow free checked bags, so I ended up paying $25 per bag.

However, I believe I had my AA FF number on the ticket, so potentially that may have been the issue.

  • Ed says:

Can anyone advise pleae on number of miles / tax to get from either SFO/LAX/LAS to Hawaii on economy? Or where to find this out?

    • Brian says:

Do a dummy booking on ba.com.

      • Danksy says:

Ed… Do a dummy booking then compare the cost of a cash ticket (and Avios /TP gained) to the value of Avios you’ll be burning.

IMHO the economics rarely stack up redeeming in economy!

        • callum says:

25,000 return with about £8 in tax. A perfectly decent deal for economy.

Alaska airlines is your best bet – check fir availability on AA.com and call BA to book.

  • Chris says:

I got advice from HFP previously – thank you – and have booked a family of 4 from Baltimore to Miami in economy next July. 7,500 avios each and £3 in tax. Even paying $25 per person per suitcase it is still a fraction of the full fare.

PS a huge thanks for all the advice as I have used points from Glasgow to Washington and return via Orlando and also SPG points for the hotels. A really cheap holiday just for taking out a couple of Amex cards.

  • John says:

Yeah likewise we are flying BA CW Abz-Ord & JFK-Abz in March. With 16 days in MCO so a couple of days in Chicago & NYC. Again could only afford this due to redemptions & HFP advice. Reward flights ORD-MCO-LGA are costing us £3 each way (3 of us). Was expecting to pay the $25 per bag, but now learn that Bronze gets one free. Oddly my 5 year old has Bronze status with lifetime Tier points, so another $25 saved as I have just learned. Even if we take 3 cases out and 4 back thats only costing us $125 for the bags. Amazing bargain. Didn’t see point in flying business for US domestic – for 2 hours or so on a plane – keep the point for something else. Domestic route via Charlotte & Washington but only pay once for bags according to T&Cs. Save £500 or so this way, no doubt to fill extra case on way back with £500 of stuff.

  • Will Soper says:

I have an 2-4-1 First redemption from LHR to LAX A380 in 10 days. Then a connection to Hawaii from LAX with AA (in economy mehh). Just noticed this post, and looked into trying to add bags to the AA flight. Couldn’t seem to do it on the AA booking and on the phone AA suggested this could only be done at check in. For $25 per bag. Not so bad on cost but hoped to add bags before flight just incase the price gets bumped up at the desk. Any thoughts?
    Thanks all

    W

    • Rob says:

I wouldn’t worry about it – do it at the desk. One less thing to worry about pre-trip.

    • Danksy says:

The queues in the terminals for economy at LAX can be huge! I would personally see if they can sort it this side at the American Airlines desk before you fly!

  • Jon Easthope says:

Slightly OT – Trying to get 4 tickets LA-NYC direct for summer next year with avios/virgin miles. Availability on AA (through BA) only 1 seat per flight so no good. Know I could do a stopover somewhere (say, via MIA or ORD) but looking for direct. Tried Virgin/Delta but no one-way rewards. Have I missed something? Any other ways apart from paid tickets? Thanks.

    • Callum says:

Try other airports like Philadelphia or Boston. Unless you’re in a particular hurry to get to New York there are several nearby cities that are great to visit for a couple of days, then move on to New York by train/bus in a few hours.

      • Jon Easthope says:

I think this what I’ll have to do unless by some miracle availability opens up on AA. Thanks both for helping.

    • Jon Easthope says:

Yeah, looked at these – again no one way reward flights possible 🙁

  • Shaun M says:

I was on a redemption flight last week from MIA to EYW. Although on my ticket it says hand luggage only but when I checked in online it says I can bring 3 bags (I am a BA Emerald). I was quite surprise with that!

  • Lady London says:

Is there also no luggage on a domestic flight if you are connecting to an international flight on the same ticket?
