News in brief:

A new way to spend expiring Emirates Skywards miles

I get a lot of emails from HfP readers concerned about some Emirates Skywards miles which are approaching expiry.

Your options are fairly limited.  There is no way of extending their life so you need to spend them before they expire.  For small amounts your options include:

There is now a new option.  Thanks to a new partnership with Rocketmiles, you can now redeem Emirates Skywards miles for hotel rooms across the world.  You can combine miles and cash – as long as you have at least 5,000 miles – so this is a good way of using up your entire expiring balance.

You can also earn Emirates Skywards miles on hotel rooms booked via Rocketmiles.

Full details can be found on the Emirates website here.

BA to remove therapeutic oxygen from short-haul flights

In an interview with Skift last month, British Airways CEO Alex Cruz said “If one particular day we don’t come up with an idea to reduce our costs, then we’re not doing our job.”

And so it came to pass on Friday that BA announced it will no longer provide therapeutic oxygen on short-haul flights departing after 1st February 2018.

Customers requiring therapeutic oxygen on short-haul flights are being told to make their own provisions.  You need to receive medical clearance from BA before you can bring your own therapeutic oxygen onboard, and it must be from a list of acceptable providers.

British Airways will continue to provide therapeutic oxygen on board long-haul flights.

Etihad offering a free repeat holiday if it rains

Etihad is pushing its Etihad Holidays packages at the moment with an interesting guarantee.

If you book a break in Abu Dhabi, and there is more than 5mm of rain during your stay, Etihad will provide you with a free replacement holiday up to the same value.

The small print is confused, however.  The website for this offer mentions ‘1st May to 30th September’ but the small print talks about stays between 1st June and 31st August.  This is a major difference as your best chance of a downpour is obviously in the shoulder season, primarily May.  That said, the chance of a payout is slim in any event.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

OT, but BA related. Just had an email from Amex saying that if I added a Supplementary card to my British Airways American Express Premium Plus card by 31 March 2017, I’ll earn 3,000 Avios for the first approved card. Not sure how targetted an offer it is?

    • Cate says:

Had the same but for AMEX gold.

      • Joel says:

        Same for Amex Gold

        • Mike says:

Amex gold for me – maybe they’ve received all the moans and groans about the BAPP 241 and decided to throw some avios at us as a sweetener.

    • Rob says:

I got it on my BAPP but not my wife. My wife has it on her Gold. Nothing on my Plat, nothing on either of our SPGs.

      • ben says:

I got the same e-mail on my gold card. Does anyone know if it the supp card holder has had an account within the lat 6 months will that matter?

        • AndyF says:

It shouldn’t matter, I had the offer on both my BA and Gold card sent to me this morning and I have just asked for supp cards for my partner who already has the same cards. After about 5 seconds of applying, I checked my account and the points had already posted. It really can’t get any better than that. Fantastic service.

    • Dominic says:

I had an offer of 5,000 for my platinum card this morning. To anyone who already has one – do they get their own online account or is their only way of knowing what they spend from me checking and adding it all up?

      • Genghis says:

What a supp spends is split out on your statement. They can get their own online account.

    • Janeyferr says:

I’ve had an offer of 1000 Nectar points for a supp Nectar Amex.

    • xcalx says:

Got the offer on Gold that was cancelled 2 weeks ago

    • Liz says:

Better than me Alan – I got nothing!

      • Liz says:

Although I did get 6 x £5 small shop statement credits for 6 transactions that didn’t post at the time of purchase but already got credited manually so thank you Amex for the bonus £30!

        • Alan says:

Nice one 🙂 I’ve just had quite a bit more courtesy of Barclaycard customer services on the Hilton card 😛

  • Barks says:

I too would love to see Alex Cruz given the boot. Fair enough BA needs to compete with the low cost airlines but the focus should be improving operational efficiency rather than engaging in all this cost cutting that directly affects the end product and the perception of the brand (which no one can argue he isn’t destroying for what is ultimately his own financial gain).

  • Fadi says:

Speaking of Abu Dhabi, has the EY sale gone unnoticed?

    • Rob says:

They haven’t sent me a list of prices yet ….. was hoping one would turn up.

  • Mikhail says:

OT: What’s the longest it has taken for an international transaction to appear on your AmEx statement?

Had a hotel stay in one the Tokyo Hyatt’s which is missing from 20/2 however, every other transaction I made even after e.g. airport duty free have posted – wondering if and when it will post :d.

    • Waribai says:

That doesn’t sound that long to be honest. I had a stay at Hyatt Regency Nice in April 2014 which was not charged until June of that year. Until the transaction occured, I definitely thought I had got away with a free stay!

  • Ben E says:

    Cold shoulder season?! 🙂

  • Steve says:

In my experience, large legacy companies cannot ever be effective at competing with smaller, more nimble companies.

They can copy competitors and cut costs as much as they like, but they will never truly be able to match a company who had low cost ingrained from the start.

They will never get the price point correct, but will remove effective customer service to the point where there is no longer a differentiator or brand value still in evidence.

Sad story for such a brand.

    • Frenske says:

      Easyjet fleet: 237
      British Airways: 269
      Ryanair: 373

Not sure you can call Easyjet and Ryanair small companies any more. Of course they don’t have long-haul planes.

    • Rob says:

True. If you look at Norwegian, for example, they charge for long-haul food but I understand that on some planes you can order whatever you want, at whatever time you want, via your IFE screen for delivery to your seat a few minutes later. THAT is how you mix low cost with a decent level of service.

  • Waribai says:

My biggest concern is his aim of turning Avios purely into a revenue based loyalty programme. If you start out from that basis on an LCC then granted it may have proved successful. However, taking the existing aspirational aspect out of redeeming is a dead end if you ask me.

    • Rob says:

The CEO has told me to my face that it won’t happen, and I believe him because he understands the reasons not to do it.

      • Ro says:

They do. I just don’t think the US viewers care about BA (and why should they lol)

  • James67 says:

OT and hard to stomach and believe: BA just topped the UK superbrands survey for third year running. It’s all over the media, takd your pick,
