  To date I have not used black cabs, uber or private hire cars in London so a bit lost on best options. Meeting two friends off flight at Heathrow in January and taking them to HI Wembley. Obviously not convenient for either tubeor express so think we will get car. What would be my best option; will they offer fixed price or meter, and when can I book? Visitors coming to UK for first time with visa so potentially border delay even after flight arrives. Fro what I can gather private hire charge by minute for waiting time at Heathrow. Happy for any advice anybody can offer. Thanks.

    I regularly get taxi’s from LHR to Essex and use my local taxi company (private hire). They charge me £65 (£60 on the way) fixed price. They wait around the corner, I call them when I have cleared customs and they meet me in passenger pick up – no extra charges if I take longer than I think same as no discount if they get caught in traffic on the M25 and are late….. Company expenses + blackberry = no interest in Uber, Gettaxi etc for these journeys.

      To be fair, I have a 100% strike rate getting an Uber at Heathrow with no delay. They always have a few cars parked up nearby and there are flat fees to and from Heathrow so you know the cost.

        Thanks Raffles, so best plan might be just to wait to my two friends exit into arrival hall, call uber and grab a drink while waiting for tm to arrive. I could find flat rates to central, west and east London but nothing for north london.

          No. You need to go up to DEPARTURES. There is nowhere to pick you up in arrivals – the road does not go there!

          You won’t have time for a drink either, the car will be outside departures within 3-5 minutes. Each exit / entrance in departures is numbered, the driver will call you and tell you where he is (or if you are first text him with the number).

          Thanks to all for feedback. I will give uber a try for experience, since it’s in many cities, I can get a £10 credit and Rob can getsmall benefit from referal. Before I use l8nk Rob, do you know if there is a timelimit on my using the credit? Will be T4 at Heathrow, doI need to go to departure level there too ( I assumed you were referring to T5)?

          Not sure about T4 but, in general, you are always best going to the departures drop off area because that is where cars can quickly pull in and leave again. In the arrivals areas there is generally nowhere to wait outside the door with minicabs pushed off towards the short stay car park.

      Thanks, i used to do same when I lived in Kent. They hung out at the McD outside terminal until i called on disembarking. What i need is an airport or London based company i know i can rely on without any scams etc.

    You can try batransfer.com (nothing to do with the airline). It will show price online, you can also book online and pay by Amex). If you register for free you get further discount. And you can specify how long after flight landing the driver should meet you, say 45 mins. They track the flight. I used them a lot last year but then my travel pattern changed.

      Use these guys a lot and recommended to various friends. No problem, though UberX does pip them slightly going home now and it’s right there when I am so no worries about being early / late

    James, I did the LHR to HI Wembley run with Uber in October and couldn’t fault it, due to combining of two promos I got the fare for free. As Raffles mentions you need to go up and outside to the departures level / drop off area (the Uber cars lurk here waiting on a pick up), you will probably be waiting seconds until your taxi driver calls you up to confirm where he is. Once you get to HI Wembley there is a vehicle barrier which seems to scare the Uber drivers! Tell them to buzz reception and get let in.

    Getting an Uber cab back from HI Wembley can be trickier, on a Saturday afternoon there were none, and once one showed up on the app Uber charged a premium due to how busy they were. However I think it was still the best available option.

    I’ve made the trip from heathrow T5 to HI Wembley several times and your likely to not wait more than 5 mins from the departures drop off point. If you go via the A312 and there is no traffic it’s only £28. Make sure you check traffic conditions via google maps first and confirm the route. Uber’s can be scarce at times in Wembley but I’ve always managed to get one. Start checking 30 mins/ 1 hour before you have to leave and request as soon as one pops up.

      Thanks Mike, I’m going to give them a go. I understood priving to and from airports was fixed but your message suggests it may depend on traffic. Was £28 a fixed price or guude price based on your experuence?

  I use Get Taxi every day for journeys within Zone 1 where I both live and work, to the extent that I am apparently one of their top 100 customers! It is actually a very good service, and very convenient to be able to pre book cabs. Their customer service is also exceptionally good compared to Hailo, Uber and all the minicabs.

  However, if I lived in zone 3 -6 and booked a cab to my office every day between now and Christmas then Get Taxi would lose a fortune on subsidising these rides at £5 each. Somehow I think they may not have completely thought through this promotion.

      1. £5 offer and fixed prices only apply when you are notified by in-app pop up. If no app pop up is shown, the journey does not qualify
      2. £5 offer and fixed prices apply to journeys starting in travel card zones 3 – 6
      3. Journeys up to 10km qualify for £5 offer. Customers will be notified by app pop-up. If no app pop-up is shown, the journey does not qualify
      4. Journeys that start in zones 3 – 6 and are longer than 10km will be charged at a competitive fixed price
      5. £5 offer and fixed rate journeys apply to card bookings only
      6. User must enter pick up and destination to qualify
      7. All qualifying £5 offer journeys are based on the centre to centre distance between postcodes being less or equal than 10KM. Actual driven distance may be higher or lower than 10 KM

    Just did my home in nw London to Oxford circus for £5. There’s no way this can possibly run until the end of the year!

    Filthy tube is £3.20 with a walk in the rain! 🙂

  It does look like this could cost them a huge amount of money! Maybe they have a problem of cabs disappearing out to the suburbs, so this is a way to get them back into the city?

  Point 7 of the T&Cs are a little odd. So it’s not a 10km limit at all, but some sort of notional 10km decided on a postcode to postcode basis. Weird.

  FWIW, you can see a 10km radius around a point here http://bit.ly/1qsVTNB. (Although bear in mind the above.) I’ve selected LCY for no reason other than it was being talked about above. I know pickups from airports are officially excluded.

  I’ve downloaded this app. Verified my mobile number. When I try to enter the code, in the Coupon Code box, a pop up appears which states; ‘This coupon can be used for your first ride only | OK’. When I press OK, the pop up disappears but the code isn’t processed. It is still visible in the box. At the top right there’s a CONFIRM button. When I press that the pop up appears again etc. no credit is added.

  I’ve never used this app or taken a ride through this app before. What am I missing?

    Yep. Had this too. Wasn’t sure if it was because I downloaded the app several months ago (but never used it). To be honest, I couldn’t remember whether I’d previously entered the code or not!

    My brother has just downloaded the app today and successfully got the £10 though.
