LAST CHANCE: Alitalia status match ends in two days – get status with 26 airlines

Time is running out to take advantage of the Alitalia status match.  This will get you status with all 20 airlines in the SkyTeam alliance PLUS the 6 members of Etihad Airways Partners.  That is 26 airlines in total.

Alitalia is currently offering a status match to British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members as well as other top-tier and middle-tier status holders with other airlines.

Full details can be found on the Alitalia website.  The promotion ends on Sunday.

The scheme

The Alitalia frequent flyer scheme is called MilleMiglia.  There are four elite levels.

As a British Airways Gold, you will be matched to Freccia Alata Plus.  This level is equivalent to SkyTeam Elite Plus which is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald.

As a British Airways Silver, you will be matched to Freccia Alata.   This is ALSO considered to be SkyTeam Elite Plus.  This means that you would get worldwide lounge access with SkyTeam except on US domestic flights with Delta.  It isn’t yet clear if it gets you into the Etihad lounge when flying on Alitalia.  It does get you in when flying on Etihad.

Why you should do this even if you never fly Alitalia

Alitalia is now a member of two airline alliances.

The formal membership is with SkyTeam.  Your Freccia Alata Plus card would get you top tier privileges, including lounge access (except on domestic Delta flights in the US, I think), with the following airlines:

  • Aeroflot
  • AerolineasArgentinas
  • AeroMexico
  • AirEuropa
  • Air France
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • MEA
  • Saudia
  • Tarom
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Xiamen Air

Alitalia is also a member of Etihad Airways Partners.  This is not yet finalised, but the eventual plan is that a status holder with any of the following airlines – all of which have received equity investment from Etihad – will have reciprocal privileges with the others.

  • Etihad
  • Jet Airways
  • airberlin
  • Air Serbia
  • Air Seychelles
  • Etihad Regional

Alitalia also has partnerships with GOL, Malaysia and Qantas but I’m not sure if they offer any benefits for Alitalia top tier cardholders.

There is another reason to get a match.  You never know when there might be an opportunity to match your Alitalia status to a different Star Alliance or oneworld airline!

How do I get a status match?

You need to email a scan of your British Airways Gold card and your MilleMiglia account number (so you need to open an account first) to statusmatchmillemiglia@alitalia.com.

Here are the rules:

You have until 31st January 2016 to ask for a match

The match will last until March 2016 UNLESS your existing status card shows an expiry date beyond March 2016.  If it does, your matched card will be issued until March 2017.

ANY elite status card from an airline which is not part of the SkyTeam alliance will be accepted

Note that Skyteam lounge access is different to OneWorld – you can only use status to access if on an international itinerary, so in addition to not covering Delta domestic flights in the US, it would also exclude any other domestic itineraries (e.g. AeroMexico within Mexico, unless connecting that day, Air France within France, Alitalia within Italy) – just in case anyone turns up early to an airport looking to hang out in the lounge…!

Sent in a request in the end of Dec, still no response from them.

    • Fenny says:

Have you checked your account? I got no response, but had been matched. When I emailed to chase up, they replied straight away.

      • Sasha says:

Yes, no status updated. I have sent them another request this morning, will see!

  • Vinci says:

The millemiglia website does not like my UK postcode. I replace it by 1234 but it fails later on.

    • pauldb says:

I added my post code to the first line of my address, then but 00000 in the postcode box. I think that should work for them and for Royal Mail.

    Hej

Trying to join milemigilia to then do the status match but it doesn’t like my London postcode. Anyone had the same? what is the correct format? Thanks

  • Magarathea says:

I got a match of my BA Silver status to Freccia Alata which runs until the end of March 2016. Thanks again Rob. I am booked economy on a KLM flight from Leeds to Shanghai via Amsterdam on 31 March and am returning on 16 April. My Alitalia status will apply to the outward leg of the journey but if my MileMiglia number is on the booking as a whole will they realise my status has lapsed for the return journey? Other question is can the Alitalia “Business for you” free upgrades be used on KLM or does this only apply to Alitalia?

  • Me says:

So having registered for MilleMiglia, how do you log in? I click ‘Log in’, enter my 10 digit card number and 4 digit PIN, but it gives me an error , something about “correct format” (I can’t read the rest of it).

AwardWallet is managing to fetch my balance, but can’t log me in either.

  • Keith says:

It took about 7 ‘rejections’ of ‘not enough proof’ but eventually I got a BA Gold match. I didn’t send them anything different on the 7th time as ‘proof’ but they must have just accepted my persistence!

Is anyone struggling to get registered on the Alitalia website? I have been trying for days on different machines and browsers but it just falls over at the second stage of the application form. Any tips?! Driving me mad!

    • Me says:

Once I’d worked out how to enter a UK postcode, it was OK for me. Does it give an error?
