LAST CHANCE: Alitalia status match ends in two days – get status with 26 airlines

Time is running out to take advantage of the Alitalia status match.  This will get you status with all 20 airlines in the SkyTeam alliance PLUS the 6 members of Etihad Airways Partners.  That is 26 airlines in total.

Alitalia is currently offering a status match to British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members as well as other top-tier and middle-tier status holders with other airlines.

Full details can be found on the Alitalia website.  The promotion ends on Sunday.

Alitalia card

The scheme

The Alitalia frequent flyer scheme is called MilleMiglia.  There are four elite levels.

As a British Airways Gold, you will be matched to Freccia Alata Plus.  This level is equivalent to SkyTeam Elite Plus which is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald.

As a British Airways Silver, you will be matched to Freccia Alata.   This is ALSO considered to be SkyTeam Elite Plus.  This means that you would get worldwide lounge access with SkyTeam except on US domestic flights with Delta.  It isn’t yet clear if it gets you into the Etihad lounge when flying on Alitalia.  It does get you in when flying on Etihad.

Why you should do this even if you never fly Alitalia

Alitalia is now a member of two airline alliances.

The formal membership is with SkyTeam.  Your Freccia Alata Plus card would get you top tier privileges, including lounge access (except on domestic Delta flights in the US, I think), with the following airlines:

  • Aeroflot
  • AerolineasArgentinas
  • AeroMexico
  • AirEuropa
  • Air France
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • MEA
  • Saudia
  • Tarom
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Xiamen Air

Alitalia is also a member of Etihad Airways Partners.  This is not yet finalised, but the eventual plan is that a status holder with any of the following airlines – all of which have received equity investment from Etihad – will have reciprocal privileges with the others.

  • Etihad
  • Jet Airways
  • airberlin
  • Air Serbia
  • Air Seychelles
  • Etihad Regional

Alitalia also has partnerships with GOL, Malaysia and Qantas but I’m not sure if they offer any benefits for Alitalia top tier cardholders.

There is another reason to get a match.  You never know when there might be an opportunity to match your Alitalia status to a different Star Alliance or oneworld airline!

How do I get a status match?

You need to email a scan of your British Airways Gold card and your MilleMiglia account number (so you need to open an account first) to statusmatchmillemiglia@alitalia.com.

Here are the rules:

You have until 31st January 2016 to ask for a match

The match will last until March 2016 UNLESS your existing status card shows an expiry date beyond March 2016.  If it does, your matched card will be issued until March 2017.

ANY elite status card from an airline which is not part of the SkyTeam alliance will be accepted

Almost forgot about this! Good shout!

    • PTWorker says:

Website is having real difficulty accepting UK postcodes. Contact centre said is was a tech problem that won’t be fixed until tomorrow!!

      • Chris says:

I worked out a quick fix to the post code issue. I put my whole address and post code in the first line and entered 3 or 4 zeros for the post code. I’m sure Royal Mail have seen worse.

  • Danksy says:

Just joined …their buggy website is on a par with Iberia!

  • James says:

I got turned down for a BA Silver match this week. No explanation given, just that I didn’t meet their criteria.

    • Will says:

You need to be persistent. I got accepted fat first attempt but sent a screen shot of the card on the app and also a picture of both sides of my physical silver card. Also made it clear in email that it was one world sapphire and wanted to be matched to whatever Alitalias version of silver is. My home page on the AZ website changed to gold in a couple of days. Physical card arrived within a week.

      • James says:

Make sure you send a photo / scan of the physical card and not the screen shot of the card from your profile; that seemed to be the thing that slowed me down. Once I sent in a photo rather than a screenshot I was matched pretty quickly!

        • ee says:

Ditto although no email came saying I had been matched, just the card design changed when I logged in to their site.

  • Marwan says:

Did we get clarity on access to the Etihad lounge at LHR T4 when flying Alitalia in Y? Is this only for Freccia Alata members?

  • Tim @ Points to be Made says:

There is also another solid benefit with the status much to Freccia Alata Plus which is that you can also give Freccia Alata to another person. Both levels are Skyteam Elite Plus so it’s a nice double whammy to get lounge access, priority boarding etc.

  • Geoggy says:

I’m confused – dos this give you one world status?

Which of these cards will they match?

    Etihad Gold?

    Gulf Air Gold?

    • Marwan says:

Airberlin is the only Oneworld airline that will status match. You can match from Alitalia to AB Gold, as long as you “live” in Germany, Austria, Switzerland or the US.

      • Fenny says:

They asked for proof of my status, eg German ID card. I may “move” to the US and see if I an try again.

        • Ian Boyle says:

Any advice on how to “move”?

I have no relatives in the US so the card would end up getting sent to a random address

          Thanks

          • Fenny says:

I’m lucky enough to have a bunch of friends in Leftpondia. But if they ask for any kind of proof that I live there, I don’t have anything with addresses on. You could always use a NYC YMCA address (easy to find online). I use the zip code 10017 (47th St) whenever I need a US location to sign up for things.

As long as you get the match, you can then change address back to the UK and ask for a replacement card. Or download the app or temporary card to use instead of a physical card.

      • John says:

Airberlin wants proper proof of residence (not just address!) in the German-speaking countries. The only way to avoid this appears to be emailing them in German.

If you email Alitalia in Italian then they may give you more than you were expecting too (but obviously if you’re already top tier there’s nothing more to expect)

        • Lady London says:

Emailing them in Italian might not help. That’s what I did. They only matched my A3 Gold to Freccia Alata, despite a further request. Others had reported being matched to the correct level which so far as I am aware, would be Freccia Alata Plus.

I can’t do anything with their Silver level. I have 4-8 trips I can convert to Alitalia this year including some longhaul. But currently I have Gold elsewhere so I simply can’t use the Silver level Alitalia has given me as I would lose out.

So I’d recommend emailing them in English!

  • Alan says:

Given that when I matched my silver Ba I got the equivalent of sky team elite plus. If I used that card to match with air Berlin would I get emerald status?

  • AndyS says:

Thanks for this reminder. I did manage to status match with BA Gold from a previous article, but since then I’d forgotten that Alitalia were part of sky team. I have since made a booking with KLM but signed up to Flying Blue and used that number on the booking.

Would I be able to access a lounge by flashing this card and BP, or only if the Alitalia number is on the booking ? If so am I allowed a guest?

    • Raffles says:

In my experience trying that with BA when I had Cathay Gold, it depends on the mood of the lounge door person on the day. Some will insist you swap your FF number over, others won’t.

      • Lady London says:

… and your last chance to try to get the number changed would then be at the gate.

      • LondonFoodie says:

Though in theory you can have different FF for benefits and for accumulation (FQTV and FQTS fields if my memory serves me right). This is useful when a BA Silver member wants to credit his/her miles to AA while enjoying lounge access.

        • Rob says:

You can, yes. Good luck finding an agent who knows how to do that!

          • Ben says:

Are there any particular instructions to give them? For example, go into the booking, and on line X put FF number for benefits, on line Y put FF number for accumulation…?
