Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

HfP had 1 million page views in January …. which is a bit spooky, actually

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

If someone had told me three and a half years ago when I started HfP that I would eventually reach the giddy heights of 1 million page views per month, I’m not sure I would have believed them.

However, last month, we did it.

1,022,000 page views to be precise, of which 80% came from UK readers.

This represents 199,000 unique visitors – although a single person accessing the site from multiple devices counts as multiple unique visitors, so the actual number is lower than that.

Alexa now ranks HfP as the 1,500th biggest website in the UK.

HFP

This is a very abstract number, of course.  When I write, it is just me and a laptop.

There are now almost 3,800 articles on the site, of which I have written 99.5%.  My plan for 2016 is bring my contribution down to 97% (nothing like setting a big goal for yourself …..), primarily through letting Anika spread out from Shopper Points to pick up some of the hotel and lounge reviews and general travel pieces.  Don’t worry, she knows what she’s talking about.

There may be a few other organisational changes as well, although I am not yet fully clear how it will go.  The current situation is probably not sustainable – I get 700 emails per week, for example, which continues 24/7 whatever I am doing and wherever I am.  I even got 29 HfP emails on Christmas Day last year.

I also need to spend more time out and about meeting the airline and hotel marketing and programme heads.  That would drive bigger competitions, exclusive news stories and higher value advertising, but it is not possible with the current workload.  Let’s see how it goes.

Thank you to everyone who reads Head for Points for your support – even if you read it via the daily emails and so didn’t contribute to the 1 million page views 🙂

Of course, as January is always busy due to the post-Christmas booking frenzy, February is only 29 days, March contains Easter which is always quiet and April is only 30 days, I may not be hitting 1 million page views again for some time.

Congrats on your readership milestone, Mr Raffles, and thank you for all the high quality articles.
I am fairly new to the points collecting game, and only recently discovered HfP but now find I can’t go more than a day without checking for new posts and, often of equal interest, the readers’ comments, which offer their own insights.

Congratulations Rob! I love your site and all the people who contribute to it – it has become my new addiction. I wish I had discovered it years ago! Keep up the great work!

  • Lady London says:

Thank you Rob for your honest fair blog which is uniquely helpful. Don’t ever change. You won’t see 1 million views too often in the future. You’ll be seeing much bigger instead.

If you want help with the overload ping me. I do have space to commit to something that doesn’t have to be fulltime in time, but would be in commitment and I am sure we can come to some arrangement 🙂

Rob first of all well done you should quite rightly be very proud (sorry if I bug you in the near future for Amex hold referal).

Secondly if I can make a suggestion on improvements. The articles are brill short and sweet to the point and the comments section is a bible on some. I find the articles fade away after a day or two and no longer engaged on. I’ve no idea how this would work or be administered but it’s a pity it doesn’t feature like a forum so they can be reopened and comnented on regardless of age. I use the example of the recent accor points saga. I know you can check and post old stories it just requires searching. I find people don’t comment on after a day or two.

Just a thought not a criticism! Keep up the good work!

Let me tell you why. In the last six months, HFP has received 32,000 spam comments. This is despite the fact that only 63 articles are available for comments at any particular time (the last 21 days-worth).

Imagine if all 3,800 articles were open to comments ….

You also have to ask yourself who would read comments on old articles – not many people. Not enough to justify the spam increase!

However …. I may have found a potential half-way house between a forum (which I don’t want) and the current situation. I am going to trial it over the next couple of months and see if it works. Keep an eye out.

Congratulations Rob, that is a fantastic achievement!

I have to say that your content is the first thing I read in my emails. Its a really useful resource, plus a good read. Keep up the great work.

  • Adrian says:

Hi Rob, congratulations on hitting the 1m mark.
I’ve only with HFP since last year but it’s been a revelation. You provide great advice and are such a nice guy, which for me makes a difference, thank you, Adrian
