Bits: 10% BA Diamond Club discount is back!, 30% off in the Accor Summer Sale

News in brief:

The BA Diamond Club discount is back!

Well, here’s a surprise.  At the end of May, the 10% discount on British Airways flights offered to holders of the old bmi British Midland credit cards stopped working.

We had all forgotten that the discount was actually mean to end around that time, since we had been given well over 12 months notice.

Well, the link is working again.  Log in at, click through the big banner ad to and you will see your flights pricing up with a 10% discount.

I don’t know how long the deal will last but it is worth using whilst you can.  Thanks to Richard.

Accor Summer Sale now on

Accor Hotels has been running a sale for its Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis, Ibis Styles and Ibis Budget brands for a few weeks now.

It slipped through the HFP net originally but, as we have only just entered into the stay period – stays need to be made between 4th July and 11th September – now is a good time to mention it.

The sale covers Accor hotels in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and Austria.

Discounts are up to 30% off Best Flexible Rates – although the sale rates must be pre-paid – and an additional discount is given to members of Le Club AccorHotels.

Full details can be found on the Accor website here.  The last day to book is 4th September.

(And, if you need a UK hotel for next weekend, don’t forget the fantastic deals offered by Accor ‘Happy Mondays’, with rooms from just £25.  You can read more about them here and I will cover them again tomorrow.)

(Want to earn more hotel points?  Click here to see our complete list of promotions from the major hotel chains or use the ‘Hotel Promos’ link in the menu bar at the top of the page.)

  1. When it went people said that non card holders could get the discount. So how?

    • jonboy73 says:

I may be wrong but I understood the original deal was for premium (paid for) BMI card holders, but someone commented that it had been working for the standard(free) BMI card holders too. I wish I had known that, I only have the free card and could have made good use of 10% discount! will have to try it now it’s back…

  2. Booked a hotel using this the other day…

Are there any good Accor status offers/promos/matches?

    • No big global promo at present. Gold status can be yours for €100 by joining Ibis Business Club – article if you search. will have latest match info.

  3. Have stayed at Novotel and Ibis Blackfriars this year. Expected to wish I was next door when we had the Ibis this Saturday but it was fine. Got early check in and a large glass of wine each thanks to Platinum from Amex. Room on 11th floor was basic but still had Nespresso machine. Short walk from Waterloo, I think you walk further underground if you get the tube.

  4. Roger says:

Thanks for the news about the return of the DC discount. I’ve used it to book positioning flights to OSL (in CE – gulp!) for our QR OSL-CPT. I combined the DC discount and used 30k Avios. The discount meant a cash saving of about £50 on the Avios-reduced fare. Almost enough to put down a deposit on a couple of beers in town …

I wonder if the return of the DC offer has anything to do with the BREXIT/increase sales mentality you’ve already mentioned.

I think I need to bring forward booking a couple more ET and possibly CE fares, given that the sale and use Avios offers are due to expire.

  5. Roger says:

Thinking back, I think the discount was on the fare before the Avios reduction. 🙂

  6. harry says:

    O/T one for Anika maybe.

15% off certain giftcards on top of the usual 150 points – remember you need to be over £50 after the 15% discount is taken off – 3x £20 = £51 so that combination works.

    Eg 3x £20 Pizza Express = £51 plus you get 150 points worth 360 Avios (=c. £3.60)

    • harry says:

Would combine with the discounts/ conditional spends many of us got last week, my wife got £6 off £40, I got £8 off £40. Not meant to be used as such – no giftcards allowed – but I’ve never been challenged, just stick a few groceries on your belt and the checkout agent will forget the rule.

      • Genghis says:

Yep. Gift cards first then groceries. They may forget about the gift cards by the time you come to payment and produce your coupon…

    • Thanks, will fill a slot later in the week post Amazon Prime Day

    • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

I think I have a year’s supply of gift cards after the Amex £20 off £50 Pizza Express deal.

    • Scallder says:

Also Tesco I running double points this weekend:

Unfortunately it would appear that gift cards are excluded, however petro I included

      • harry says:

How exciting 🙁 – and loyal Tesco consumers got the Boost events taken away from them in exchange for that?

  7. MarkC62 says:

Closed my BMI CC years ago when BA took over BMI & used to get 10% BA shareholder discount anyway – then we lost that – thanks a lot BA! I still have DC account though & the link worked fine – thanks Richard. No mention as far as I can see of having to use a DC CC to get the discount though. Is there a catch I’ve not noticed?

    • Richard says:

No catch as far as I can see. As long as you follow the link from the DC account, you can pay with any card…

  8. Perry says:

Is it me but each week the Happy Monday deal, has a worse selection in London. You used to have a selection of 20 hotels now your lucky with 4 or 5.

  9. harry says:

O/T picked up my Sainsbury’s currency deal this morning – the Travel Money agent breathlessly told me I had saved £182 on today’s rate! (Should have ordered more than £1500!)

She said that there were tens of people making similar % savings in ‘her’ store, so surprised Sainsbury’s didn’t pull the rug – well done them.

Hope some of you did OK with the Moneycorp option.

    • Lawro says:

O/T- What is the quickest way when cancelling a Hilton points redemption to get the points back into my account.
Does cancelling online cause the points to redeposit instantly into my account?
Or is ringing Hilton themselves the best way to go?

      • ankomonkey says:

Only ever done this once, but after cancellation the points didn’t show immediately in my account. I logged out and back in again and they were there. This was within 5 minutes of cancelling, so if my experience is anything to go by, they do re-deposit immediately but you need to logout and in to see them.

      • Clive says:

        It’s virtually instantaneous

    • Wish I’d gone for USD with Moneycorp – did € and given it has fallen too there’s not much benefit so far.

    • Kathy says:

Well done! Surprised they honoured the rate – my pre-order at ACE FX was refused when I went to collect it.

  10. harry says:

O/T get 5000 Safar miles when you set up a family a/c with Royal Air Maroc

RAM is going to join Avios. You never know – might be a chance to switch them over to BA or IB?

    • harry says:

OK points transfer to IB is not going to happen – but you can already redeem on IB – maybe BA later? Maybe an Avios + cash deal to get you a very cheap flight?

      • Lawro says:

Had a albeit brief look at this and I believe they want you to send some sort of ID for verification so might not be as straightforward it looks.

    • Saw this but considered it unlikely given Meridiana and Flybe are not in CMA.

  11. Thanks for this article! I cancelled mine & my wife’s Diamond Club cards several years ago. On the of chance, went to their URL, logged in using my most commonly used email/password and voila, found 4000 points. My wife logged into hers … another 1400. All now moved across to BA.

Thanks Raffles .. that made my day!

  12. AndyR says:

Accor related – I remember they were extending Platinum status through 2017 for some people but couldn’t remember why? Did anyone manage to get it extended by asking?

    • They are moving to a calendar year model so all status will end in December. They moved everyone out to a December end I think. However, I got my membership year extend to April 2017 later and it hasn’t budged – although logically it should reset to December at some point.

      • AndyR says:

OK thanks. Mine is showing April 2017 also, so wondered if I had been missed. Hopefully it will update.
