IHG Rewards Club, the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc loyalty scheme, has launched a website for its Autumn 2016 promotion – IHG Accelerate. Yes, it is repeating the Autumn 2015, Spring and Summer 2016 offer!

To be honest, during 2016 IHG has been the only major hotel chain offering global promotions which offer genuine value.  Everyone has their own personal target but, for most of us, the challenge is pretty straightforward.

Here are the headline details:

  • IHG Accelerate (Version 4) covers stays from 6th September to 15th December
  • All hotels are participating

This year IHG has excluded the Christmas period.  This is a shame as hotels are traditionally very cheap between Christmas and New Year and it was possible to pick up some ‘mattress run’ nights to hit your target very cheaply.

This was my target for 64,900 points maximum, comprising:

  • 5,000 points on my next stay
  • 5,000 points for a stay in September
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 3,500 points for booking three stays via the IHG app
  • 6,400 points for booking 2 x 2-night weekend stays
  • 2,500 points for booking two stays using my Corporate Rate (where I haven’t worked for 5 years!)
  • 12,000 points for one stay in North America, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Greater China, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa
  • 1,500 points for spending $160 on food and drink (this is excluding VAT or local taxes)
  • 19,000 points for completing six of the seven targets above, excluding the September bonus

This is a bit trickier than last time, to be honest.  Even ones that you may think are easy, such as the Corporate Rate one, are not because only about 10% of hotels used to give a special deal to my ex-employer.  The Corporate Rate is also higher in many cases than sale rates.  Spending $160 (roughly £150 when you add back VAT) on food and drink isn’t easy either.

At the moment, I don’t think I can manage this.  My plans are still very flexible for the Autumn so things may change.  64,900 points is also well worth having – even if I had to spend £175 on mattress run nights it would be worth it.

My wife got an easier one for 46,600 points:

  • 3,000 points on her next stay
  • 5,000 points for a stay in September
  • 10,000 points for staying five nights
  • 6,400 points for booking 2 x 2-night weekend stays
  • 3,600 points for booking a Bonus Points Package
  • 18,600 points for completing three of the four targets above excluding the September bonus

It isn’t a no-brainer though.  It would require at least four nights over weekends or five nights midweek to trigger the 46,600 points.  I might be able to justify two mattress run nights if necessary – perhaps another day out before Christmas at the Holiday Inn Brent Cross?!

Conclusion

As long as your target is sensible, this is highly likely to be the most generous hotel promotion you are likely to see this Autumn.

That said, for my household it may be that the maximum bonuses are out of reach.  8,000 to 10,000 bonus points for a stay in September (well, 6th September to 30th September) is not to be sniffed at though.

Does a booking for 2 rooms for one night class as 2 nights in the promo? I just have to stay 3 night(s)…

    • Rob says:

Not with IHG. Starwood does treat multiple room bookings like this. But Hilton doesn’t. You really need to know these schemes inside out.

(Starwood lets 3 rooms count for credit. Quite a few people book 3 x Saturday nights at the Sheraton Skyline at Heathrow if they are getting tight for requalification.)

My offers are always rubbish. Could be that i just spend around £7000 per month on the credit card and use the accumulated points for reward nights.

  • Hans says:

i have 4 nights booked from the 5th to 9th of September. Does anyone know if the stay will count even though it started a day before the promo dates?

  • Alan says:

Well I’ve had totally useless Accelerate offers the last two times so have had no stays (apart from reward stays) and they seem to have finally given me a slightly better offer:

    3,000 Stay once
    10,000 5 nights
3,200 2 stays with IHG app
8,000 1 stay outside home country
    15,800 3 of the 4 above
    5,000 1 stay in Sept

So if I manage two one-night stays before the end of the year (both booked via the app), one in Sep, one outside the UK then I should get 35k points which is decent although not amazing – not mattress run territory for me anyway but will see if anything comes up that works.

  • Alan says:

Just had an email offering 12% off the cash component of cash+points rates for Platinum IHG members

  • Boon says:

For the “book on app” bonus, is it only for bookings made in the app after 6th Sep, or the stay just needs to be after the 6th Sep?

    • Rob says:

You can see the small print by clicking the link on the Accelerate site but should be for stays after irrespective of booking. But do check as goalposts move ….

  • Kevin says:

I have completed all of the targets recently and my account has been updated twice since end of June. However there are two targets that completed early of July have never been updated, eg book 2 stays via app and stay 4 nights shown only 50% and 75% completed. This would affect my achievement bonus points target. In total approx. 40k points yet been rewarded.

Although I called IHG about this but the people on phone didnt seem knowing about the Accelerate programme. Do you know is that any where I can raise the missing points with IHG?

    Thanks.

    • Ant says:

Kevin I had similar issues and I sent a message via Twitter to @ihgservice. They kept saying they will look into it so I kept chasing them every week until yesterday they sent me an email to confirm that the stays counted and Accelerate will be updated. At least now I have it confirmed in writing.

  • Alex W says:

Have I got the most boring offer here??

    5,000 September Bonus Offer
    3,000 Stay Once Get 3,000
    5,000 Stay 3 Nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    3,000 Stay 3 more nights
    15,000 Stay 3 more nights
Get an additional 15,000 points after night 18.

This is pretty much the same as I have had for the last 2 quarters. I was expecting a better offer this time so I bought Ambassador and got the Platinum IHG credit card… needless to say I am pretty disappointed!

Still, one stay in September and a couple more nights and I should get 13,000 which is not bad I suppose.

    Do reward stays count?
What about the paid half of an Ambassador “free” stay?

    • Danksy says:

a stay is the first night if any stay. ..so a week wI’ll only be stay even though you are there for 7 nights.

the way around this is to book alternate nights in a friends name!
