Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Why are some Lloyds Avios cardholders not receiving any points?

Regular readers will know that I hold the Lloyds Bank credit card operation in contempt.  It regularly manages to achieve levels of incompetence which other banks simply couldn’t match if they tried.

Who else, for example, would take five days to send out ‘refer a friend’ emails after you request them?  Fewer than 1 in 3 people who I refer for the Lloyds Avios cards actually manage to receive the email and receive the bonus points (my Amex strike rate is 80%).

Who else would freeze your credit card on suspicion of money laundering because your spouse paid your bill from their bank account (as happened to me)?

Unfortunately, the Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card remains an excellent product.  It is the only credit card in Britain to offer reward points (of any kind) alongside 0% foreign exchange fees.  The Avios upgrade voucher you receive for spending £7,000 – which can be across the Amex and the MasterCard – is also a great deal for a solo traveller who might find the British Airways American Express 2-4-1 voucher useless.

So, as I say, I keep recommending the card regardless.

And yet …..

There is a group of cardholders – it isn’t clear how large, but many are HfP readers – who have never received a single Avios point from their Lloyds Avios credit card.

I have been receiving these complaints from readers for well over a year.  To be honest I didn’t take them too seriously at first because IT cock-ups with data transfer of points are a fairly regular event.  And, in any event, how hard would it be for Lloyds to manually send Avios a list of accounts and the points due?

And yet, when pressurised, Lloyds can do it.  What a surprise.

This is what happened to a reader recently:

Opened a Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card account

Received no Avios at all after 10 weeks

Lodged a complaint, told it would take 12 weeks to resolve!

Waited 4 weeks, lodged another complaint threatening a referral to the Ombudsman

Missing Avios arrived 4 days later

So, pressure works.  This reader also referred his wife for her own card.  After two months, she had received no Avios.  She complained and was told by Lloyds that it would take 26 WEEKS for them to credit her the missing points.

The good news is that Lloyds is now offering a defined piece of compensation.

If you are missing Avios points, you should contact Lloyds and say that you need them for an imminent booking.  Magically, the Avios will appear.  Lloyds will also pay you £150 in compensation.

Don’t expect any missing Avios to appear without intervention.  What is interesting, from all of the different cases I have seen, is that no-one has ever been told what the problem actually is, and customers who question the bank are told that even they don’t know.

As I said, that’s Lloyds for you.

Same thing happened to my mum. She only realised when she got a note from Avios saying her existing miles were going to expire because she hadn’t earned any in so long.

  • Neil says:

I have recently applied for the Lloyds card and it is an ongoing saga! The first time I tried to apply online, the application froze at the credit check stage and a search was recorded without any decision being made (or even being pending). After a week or so of wondering whether it was worth it, I then applied again and was accepted. It is a good deal, especially as I will be travelling a lot over the coming months.

Anyway, that was a couple of weeks ago and I have not yet received any cards. I called them on Friday and was told that my cards were part of a faulty batch, and the issue would take an unknown amount of time to fix. In the meantime, the double Avios bonus starts from the date the account is opened so I am losing out (though I have had an e-mail to say that my new card account is linked to my Avios account).

Again, I am wondering whether it is worth it – and whether to make a complaint about how long the cards have taken to arrive. It is disappointing, if not unexpected. I have had a current account with Lloyds for the past five years, with no real problems, so was optimistic despite all the negative comment on here!

  • Dean Perry says:

I’ve never actually checked my Avios were going across, but after reading this thought I’d better check. I must be one of the lucky ones as the referral bonus and 6 months of double Avios received all match the amount that should be a been sent on my Lloyds statements. Maybe more seamless as I already had a Lloyds current account?

    • Genghis says:

My wife and I both had Halifax accounts prior to opening Lloyds cards last July. Referral, sign up and spend points have all posted OK (perhaps unfortunately – I wouldn’t have minded for 2 x £150)

  • Sarah says:

Question for those who have had this a while – when should the points arrive? Is it as you earn them? Or based on monthly statements? Is there any delay?
Be good to know when I should start chasing Lloyds for the missing ones…

    • Genghis says:

Points post monthly just after the day of statement generation IIRC

    • Geoff says:

Sarah, points should arrive a day or so after the statement date – that is the date it was issued, not when it is paid. Mine do now, but see my other comment.

      • Sarah says:

Thanks both. No sign of any points and my first statement was about three weeks ago. Time to chase

  • Vand says:

Possibly the worst credit card I have every owned. Exactly the same situation, lodged two complaints, still waiting. Pressure next week it is ..

The fraud protection is terrible as well. It completely ignores the travel you have predefined and blocks every transaction overseas without unblock. Cannot wait to get my points and cancel.

    • Geoff says:

Interesting, we forgot to say anything about travel and used the cards quite freely while away. Had a payment refused back at home one day randomly however. The card wasn’t blocked fortunately but was resolved via an automated text message.

    • callum says:

I think 2 of my 3000 odd transactions (not an exaggeration) have been blocked and I rarely tell them when I travel. There must be some kind of issue with your account if every one is being blocked!

      • Alan says:

Ditto – only been blocked a couple of times and then had automated text I replied ‘yes’ to and all worked fine.

    • Andy says:

I had 2 transactions overseas blocked even though I let them know where I was going to be. I even have online transactions blocked in the country. Probably happened 6 times now. I phoned to complain but was told I must just be unlucky because it is purely random security measure.

  • Geoff says:

Had the same problem. Registered a new card in Jan and got the referral points but none from our spending. Contacted Lloyds and told it could be up to 26 weeks, unless I wanted to lodge a complaint, which I did. Points backlog arrived after a few weeks and next statement were added correctly, and the 7k voucher has appeared. Got regular calls from the complaints manager but on the latest one she seemed unaware that I was now getting the points – but she offered me £200 for my trouble. They also screwed up the direct debit which got returned on the first month, wasn’t set up for the second and we wait to see if it works for next month.

My partner referred her mum for a card, which she got and has already used for a big purchase, but neither have yet had any referral or shopping points.

  • Klaus-Peter Dudas says:

I must say that I’ve had only good experience with Lloyds. I once went over my limited by a few pounds and they reinstated my promotion (interested free and double points) straight away after calling them and refunded all of the interest charged. I also completely forgot to refer my wife when she got here’s, messaged them to explain and 2x 4,500 avios were in our household account within a few days. Never had any fraud issues either. Guess I’m just lucky by the sounds of it…

  • N1david says:

My husband is in the middle of a complaint with Lloyds – he has not been getting Avios for about six months. He had this problem when he got the cards and started getting the points but they have just stopped. In addition, he does not get monthly statements. The transactions come through and his monthly DD is charged but the transactions show on the website on the list of “recent transactions “, going back months. He’s been dealing with Lloyds for about six weeks now, will have to get him to chase on Tuesday.
