News in brief:

Last day to buy Avios with a 50% bonus

Today is your last chance to buy Avios points with a 50% bonus.

You need to visit ba.com via this page in order to buy.

Here are a few price points, although you get the bonus even on the smallest 1,000 Avios purchase:

5,000 Avios – was £95 (1.9p), now 7,500 Avios for £95 (1.26p)

10,000 Avios – was £175 (1.8p), now 15,000 Avios for £175 (1.16p)

20,000 Avios – was £335 (1.7p), now 30,000 Avios for £335 (1.12p)

50,000 Avios – was £815 (1.6p), now 75,000 Avios for £815 (1.09p)

100,000 Avios – was £1,615 (1.6p), now 150,000 Avios for £1,615 (1.07p)

The cheapest price is therefore 1.07p per Avios point.  Is this a good deal?  Well, it is fair to say that you won’t lose money at this level.  I have a spreadsheet showing the last few million Avios I redeemed and my average value is 1.15p per point.

That said, I am not a buyer at this level myself.  The gap between what I need to pay and what I will get for them is too narrow to justify swapping a liquid asset (cash) for an illiquid, inflationary one (Avios).

If you need to top off an account or you are certain that you can good value when you spend them, 1.07p may make sense.  This is also a very easy way to pick them up – simply pick up your credit card and buy.  There are no hoops to jump through, no criteria to meet.  The ba.com page is here.

Norwegian launches £99 / €99 one-way sale to the US

We finally have a date in the diary next month for our review of Norwegian Premium.  We’re looking forward to seeing how it compares to BA’s World Traveller Plus and Club World, given the low cost.

If you are happy flying Norwegian transatlantic in Economy, they launched some very strong deals yesterday to promote their new routes to Provincetown (Rhode Island) and New York / Stewart (a $20 – but long – bus ride to Manhattan).

13,000 seats have been released from Edinburgh, Belfast, Dublin, Cork and Shannon at £99 / €99 each-way.

The following routes are included:

Belfast to Stewart International (New York state), Providence (Rhode Island)

Edinburgh to Providence (Rhode Island), Bradley International (Hartford) and Stewart International (New York state)

Cork to Providence (Rhode Island)

Shannon to Stewart International (New York state), Providence (Rhode Island)

Dublin to Stewart International (New York state), Providence (Rhode Island)

Departure dates are 15th June to March 2018 (Edinburgh), 1st July to March 2018 (Belfast, Cork, Shannon, Dublin).

You must book by 3rd.  Edinburgh fares only show if you use promo code FLYUSA99 – no code is available for departures from other airports.  The Norwegian website is here.

Ahhh Provincetown is somewhere else entirely – the whale watching gay capital of Cape Cod…..

  • Netxu says:

Norwegian plans to fly providence, newburgh and hartford routes with narrowbody planes. 99£ is a good fare as long as you know what are you getting (or should I say aren’t?): No IFE, no checked baggage, no meals, no seat selection, no pillows/blankets/amenity kits. You have to pay for every extra you need. If you won’t need those extras, then get this bargain and fly norwegian, but if you want a legacy carrier level of service then compare prices before buying.
I will be flying DUB-PVD-EDI in august, I got 69$/€ seats when they launched these routes. Let’s see how flying norwegian’s ultra-low-cost looks like! And if everything goes fine, I will be looking forward norwegians long haul/narrow body routes from othee regional airports, such as BIO, my home airport.

    • Rob says:

I agree, I am not convinced the numbers add up in general but at €99 you probably come out on top.

    • Mark says:

The 787 has a pretty decent IFE. Fifty quid all in for for baggage, seat selection (including bulkhead seats with super legroom) and a meal or two. Plus icecreams etc.

      • netxu says:

But Norwegian won’t use the 787 to fly to/from Providence, Stewart-newburgh and Connecticut-hartford. They’ll use 737MAX8 planes (3+3 seat config, no premium cabin, no seat-mounted IFE)

  • Rom says:

How does the points buy from BA appear on the Amex statement? Is it points.com or ba.com?

  • CV3V says:

Norwegian may not have IFE but they do offer free wifi. Also, ‘Boston’ prices up at £200 rtn from Edinburgh.

  • Lumma says:

Surely the main benefit of Norwegian to the USA is that you can book the flights 1 way at a reasonable cost for a redemption flight going the other way?

When you add on baggage and seat selection, it rarely seems any cheaper for a return flight

    • Mark says:

Or when you do a one way transatlantic cruise, its a great cheap way to get home.

  • fadi says:

Booked a long weekend for something to do, never been to NY. Came out at £250 with luggage, free exit row seat selection both ways. Thanks for the heads up.

  • wgbalf says:

Flew Norwegian Premium in Feb LGW-LAS on their new 787 Dreamliner. Food, alcohol, seat, baggage included in ticket price just over £600 return. Good service and good IFE. Not lie flat seats but a decent recline with lots of space. Not quite CW but better than Premium Economy.

  • Jonathan says:

I have been trying numerous times to purchase Avios from the BA site and no matter what card I use for payment I get an error message. Have spoken to BA customer service and was told to try later today or tomorrow! I was hoping to buy the maximum avios with the 50% bonus but its does not work whetehr I use a Mac or PC. Has anybody else had similar problems today.

    • Lee Marsh says:

Jonathan, how did you get on. Same issue here and now I’m worried we’ve lost out and trying to speak to them at the moment is next to impossible.

      • Yan says:

Iberia has just started a 50% off Avios sale as well, and marginally cheaper in Euros
