If you are a regular user of Uber in the UK, there is a good new offer available which can save you money on your rides.

Uber, the ever-expanding taxi / ride sharing / call it what you want car service, is spreading across the UK at a furious pace.  Once it arrived in Rotherham two years ago (and my home town is not exactly an early-adopter hotspot) it was clear it would end up everywhere.  It is now in 82 countries worldwide, looking at its website list, including places such as Cambodia and Bangladesh.

The key point is that the same Uber app works in every country.  It doesn’t matter if you are in Sheffield or St Petersburg – you book in the same way and the ride is charged to your stored credit card.

Uber 350

The services offered vary by country and city.  In London you can choose from four options varying from a Toyota Prius to a Mercedes S-Class.  If you really want to drive down costs, there is also the Uber Pool option where you agree to let the driver pick up another passenger heading in the same direction.  In Sheffield, there are only two options – the Prius (or equivalent) and a Mercedes E-Class (or equivalent).

How to save 15% on your rides – until tomorrow

PayPal’s digital gift card store is offering 15% off Uber digital gift cards until tomorrow, 10th September.

You need to buy via this link.

Only £25 and £50 gift cards are available and you can only buy one per transaction.

There doesn’t seem to be any limit to the number of transactions you make, however, and the website actively encourages you to also buy ‘for a friend’.

You will be emailed a code number which you enter into the Uber app.  The credit is instantly applied to your account.

The credit can only be used in the UK.  Thanks to Nick and Adam for this.

Uber is now a Tesco Clubcard redemption partner

There is another easy way of picking up Uber credit. Uber is now a Tesco Clubcard partner, at a very generous ‘3 times face value’ rate.

Follow the link above for my full article.  This is one of the most generous Clubcard redemption offers.  If you spend a lot of money with Uber in the UK, it is arguably better than redeeming your Clubcard vouchers for Avios or Virgin Flying Club miles.

Why?  Because £10 of Tesco Clubcard vouchers will get you £30 of Uber credit or 2,400 Avios.  That means you are ‘paying’ 1.25p per Avios, which is far too high in my opinion.

The Jonty family used a 7 seat Uber XL in Sheffield last month. Weren’t many about though.

Uber free £1500 credit for scrappage – presumably stacks with various other scrappage deals being offered

  • rich says:

Has anyone used the Uber digital card- trying to see if it’s actually been added to my account and it’s very difficult to tell if it has gone on?

    • Joseph Heenan says:

Yes. At least on the iOS add it appears on the ‘payment’ entry from the ‘burger menu’ (same place you add credit cards) as a gift card. £50 instantly appeared on my account.

The uber barclaycard 11th ride free offer is ongoing until the end of 2017 btw – journeys outside the UK count there so makes sense to have both setup even though the tesco offer is better for inside the UK.

    • Alan says:

It seems to be poorly implemented – for digital credit from Tesco CC conversion it stopped showing. I ended up having to uninstall and reinstall the app to get it to show up again.

Can the £15 credit be used on Ubereats? free lunch anybody?

the Tesco 3x voucher definitely works on both cabs & food

  • Stu N says:

Don’t forget you can link your Uber and SPG accounts too, if you’ve had a Starwood stay you earn a few starpoints per ride outside stays and 2 per US$ during stays.

Or in theory you do, my accounts were unlinked which is apparently impossible so chasing to get points for a couple of hundred dollars worth of rides over the summer. Guess what – SPG say talk to Uber and Uber say talk to SPG.

    Anyone had this situation?

  • Genghis says:

There’s a drop down at the top middle or so of the home page

    • MarkH says:

Ah got it – hidden under Features. Thanks.
Would be handy if they showed up when using the search box.

Shame you can’t pay by Amex!

  • Simon says:

Iirc some retailers are now not awarding cash back via tub when the payment method is gift card. Can’t remember who did this to me, maybe Argos?

  • Nick says:

Anyone know how long uber credits last? (Assuming the company remains solvent!) Is it 12 months like Costa or 10 years like Amazon?

    • Nick says:

Uber Gift Card funds “never expire”.

      • Genghis says:

I have some credit on my Uber account from Tesco. I’m sure previously it said an expiry date (IIRC 6 months as noted on the Tesco Cc page) but now nothing mentioned. Anyone else noticed this or am I just seeing things?

        • Nick says:

I believe that Uber treat the Tesco CC credit as a “Gift Card”, since the link to the full Uber T&C on the Tesco CC site takes you to the Uber T&C for a “Gift Card. Therefore one would assume that the funds don’t expire. If they did, you would probably have a good case to argue due to the link.

        • TGLoyalty says:

It says gift card but the tesco email says 6 months.

tbh its so fast Ill just do a few every so often.

          • Rob says:

Exactly. Code arrives in 5 minutes so no need to overdo it unless Uber announced its splitting with Tesco.

        • Alan says:

I definitely didn’t see any expiry or I wouldn’t have shifted so much across as I don’t use it that often!

          • TGLoyalty says:

100% in the email from tesco in notes 6 months expiry. Didn’t bother me as I only did £15 and I’ve already used it all.

Though what we all know is what it says and what happens are always two different things. If Uber credits never expire i assume this will work the same way

          • Alan says:

Yes, the email after redeeming said that, but the Clubcard page doesn’t mention any expiry. It links to Uber Gift Card T&Cs which also say credit doesn’t expire, so hopefully is in lines with Nick’s reply. Have Tweeted Tesco to clarify.

          • Nick says:

The email from Tesco does indeed show an expiry date of 6 months. However, I take this to be the expiry date for the “Gift Card”, not the actual funds.

It’s still my understanding that once the FUNDS have been deposited they “never expire”.

That said, to be absolutely safe, I’ll err on the side of caution and not do too much at one time. 🙂
