Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Bits: now use Avios on Virgin America, new Marriott Amex coming?, a HfP winner

News in brief:

Use Avios on Virgin America flights from April

Virgin America, the US domestic airline operating primarily on the West Coast, was bought by Alaska Airlines in 2016.

Integration, as always with airline mergers, has been slow.  However from 25th April 2018 all Virgin America routes will carry Alaska Airlines flight numbers instead of Virgin America ones.

This sounds like a trivial change, but it isn’t.

Alaska Airlines is an Avios redemption partner.  A lot of people don’t know this, because the flights are not bookable on ba.com – you have to call BA to book them.  This Head for Points article (click) explains all you need to know about booking Alaska Airlines flights.

From 25th April, flights on the old Virgin America routes are also bookable with Avios.

US domestic flights have a slightly different Avios pricing chart.  There is a minimum cost of 7,500 Avios points per one-way flight.  Everywhere else in the world, a flight of up to 650 miles will cost 4,500 Avios one-way.  Inside the US, it will cost 7,500 Avios.   For flights above 650 miles, standard Avios pricing applies.

Full details of the new expanded Alaska Airlines route network can be found on its website.

Is Amex launching a Marriott credit card?

A couple of years ago, the Marriott credit card – operated by Creation Financial Services – was closed to new applicants.

The reason is mysterious, but seems to involve Marriott discovering that it did not actually have the necessary licence from the Financial Conduct Authority to promote credit cards.  This is the same licence that I am obliged to have in order to write about them.

Things are moving on.  If you look at this page of the FCA website, Marriott International Inc received an FCA licence on 22nd August.

More interestingly, as Marriott International Inc is a US corporation, it appointed American Express Europe to act on its behalf – not Creation.

This does not necessarily mean that Amex will launch a Marriott branded card.  The merged Starwood Preferred Guest / Marriott Rewards programme is now expected to launch in January 2019.  My money is on that scheme being called Marriott Preferred Guest and the licence may be linked to that.

However …. many people are expecting Marriott to sever its links with American Express.  These were inherited with the acquisition of Starwood but, in the US, Marriott has worked exclusively with Visa for many years.

The UK is a different market, of course, but now that Amex co-brand cards incur the same 0.3% interchange fee as Visa or Mastercard products there is little incentive to launch one.  Why bother, when a Visa or Mastercard is more widely accepted and has the same interchange fees?

It is all very confusing …..

Hilton Park Lane

A Head for Points winner

Back in January I ran this article on two semi-secret cashback deals for Hilton and Avis that American Express was running via Facebook.

The cashback deals came with a twist.  Five people who triggered both the Hilton and the Avis cashback deal would win a weekend at the Hilton Park Lane in London.

Reader Alex dropped me an email yesterday, from his £1,000 per night Park Lane Suite at the hotel, saying that he had been one of the five winners.  Well done Alex.

  • Luke says:

    Raffles,

Something to add. Amex is not currently issuing spg designed cards in Canada, they are just issuing temporary magstripe cards for those with the SPG card. Maybe this could be another sign, possibly waiting for a Marriott branded card stock.

    • Luke says:

Also forgot to add. The Chase Marriott card in Canada was discontinued

    • Canuck says:

I assumed they just ran out of stock! My temp SPG card arrived last week and wondered why it didn’t have any SPG branding on it.

  • Stu N says:

OT- what’s the easiest way to cancel an Amex? SPG – had it for a couple of months, the Starpoints have just zeroed so should be in my SPG account in a day or two. I have a small balance on it – do I phone and get a balance to settle after pro-rata fee refund or is there a better way to do so?

    • Matt says:

You can do it over the chat facility. Probably best to decline their offer of a phone call to discuss why you want to cancel. Takes 10 minutes or so.

They’ll automatically refund part of the fee, you’ll be able to pay the resulting balance as normal, either direct debit or a single debit card payment. If you have a credit balance after the refund you’ll need to get back on to the chat to request a refund.

      • Stu N says:

        Thanks, that’s great.

        • MattyS says:

MrsS cancelled hers yesterday by phone with no problems or hard sell but on checking the SPG account, 1500 less points had come in than had left the Amex account. No idea why, no problem with mine when I cancelled. May be worth checking youve got all you expect transferred across before cancelling.

    • Brighton Belle says:

Why not wait until small shops has run over Xmas? The freebies might exceed the fees.

      • Genghis says:

Agreed. You should be maximising Amexes this time of year. Fees for another 2 months are £12.50, only 2.5 shop smalls. But then you delay resetting the clock by two months…

        • Stu N says:

Interesting angle – but given the doubt over future of SPG cards would like to try to fit in two churns by the end of next year.

We have a reasonable number of Amex cards anyway so should do well enough from Shop Small. I assume supplementary cards qualify in their own right, that could be worth looking into…

          • Alan says:

Yep supp cards qualify too – remember you can always get an additional supp in your own name with an designation of ‘AC’. Handy to keep biz expenses spend separate but also useful at Shop Small time! For the Plat card the additional is also a Plat (even if you’ve already issued your additional Plat), although obviously doesn’t come with another set of PP cards!

        • Alex W says:

Could someone do a guide on how to maximize shop small for people outside of London? I’ve managed precisely zero shop smalls the last 2 years…

          • Alan says:

For once I find it a pretty non-London-centric offer from Amex, lots of places in Edinburgh take it, some I didn’t even realise were part of so got a surprise £5!

        • Genghis says:

Surely it depends on where you live. I believe TRH1 does alright down in Cornwall. Even I have good success in Darlington when I go just before Xmas (half price breakfasts, dinner and beers).

        • Alan says:

Yes, resetting the churn clock more important for me at least – already will have 3 Amex cards on the go so prefer to close SPG and get it again in 2018 🙂

        • Alex W says:

@Genghis Cheap beer isn’t what I had in mind… I must be getting old! I like the sound of half price stamps and gift cards though.

        • the real harry1 says:

2 fush n chups bars, stamps, beer tinnies & pubs for a £5 lunch (sandwich & 2 pints for £5-6), sometimes restaurants but map is looking a bit thin this year

always good for Xmas joints though – my local butchers [nearly] all play ball & let me split the bill into £10s once I explain – the [nearly] being some bad bone a couple of years ago in Falmouth who was on the point of calling the police 🙂

        • Genghis says:

Oh I forgot – my dentist is also on SS for half price dental and hygienist appts.

        • Genghis says:

@TRH1 Has the map been released?

        • the real harry1 says:

well – there is a map – not sure how good it is but one of the chippies wasn’t on it last year

        • JamesB says:

@Genghis and others collecting nectar points…Sainsbury double up in mid November if you had not already heard.

        • Genghis says:

@JamesB Thanks. Potentially a bit early for me getting my life insurance stash but I have some others to use up.

        • Waribai says:

IME churn clock is not really enforced with SPG Amex. Amex Gold admittedly a different matter.

        • Alex W says:

@Genghis, An SS dentist, yikes! Sounds like torture!

    • Steve-B says:

Just to add, I also closed my SPG at the end of last month by calling and there was no hard sell to retain. I just said that I wanted to focus on collecting MRs. The agent kindly reminded me that I could come back in 6 months for another sign up bonus 🙂 which I am sure to take them up on!

One other data point – even though my account had been closed I had a few points remaining. The agent told me they would be transferred around the 20th as ususal and they duly were. I wouldn’t risk it for large balances though.

  • Andrew (@andrewseftel) says:

Could it be that Starwood will cease to be a legal entity before the card is withdrawn?

  • Nigel Huggins says:

Creation!! I woukdnt touch anything run by them. I had a flybe credit card from them years ago and upon ringing them in Solihull to activate my new card, the kid on the phone wanted my complete password in order to complete the activation process and not just “letters two and five” or whatever.
I cancelled my account straight away. Good luck to anyone keeping abreast of their spending Vs fraud with these fools.

    • Alex W says:

I’ve had the opposite experience, with Creation being overly cautious. They have declined a number of transactions even after I’ve rung them to tell them I’m about to make a large transaction. They also stopped my card, as you can’t possibly be in the US one week, back to the UK for the weekend and then back to the US again the next week!

      • Lady London says:

I had that kind of thing with them too. I stopped short of getting the IHG card, once I noted it was run by Creation if I recall correctly.

      • Fenny says:

I had endless problems with Creation IHG at the beginning of the month trying to make the final payment on my car. After a week of getting nowhere – they claimed the transaction was going through as cash rather than a purchase – I put it through on my Virgin Atlantic card. Only reason to keep the IHG card now is for the gold status. I definitely wouldn’t have another card from them.

    • Canuck says:

I agree – it’s amateur hour at Creation HQ. Had endless problems at their end with my application years back. Think I still have the Marriott card somewhere in my drawer collecting the 2k points each year.

  • Cate says:

Is the consensus then that the SPG card is still safe to churn in 6 months?

    • Alan says:

I’m to go for it – always a slight risk but given Marriott/Amex mention and continuation of SPG next year I’d hope it’s more a question of whether you can get 2 rather than 1 churns in…

    • Roberto says:

I churned my OH’s SPG card in just under 5 months (by mistake) earlier this month and noticed that the 11k bonus was applied after spending £1000 on the first day. I also got the 5k referal too.

  • Alan says:

Bits OT – finally got Amazon paypoint top up sorted. Charged 50p bank fee by shop but worked and had notification of £5 extra credit. They’d never heard of it before and weren’t sure but I asked them to just scan in and it worked fine. If they’ve got a paypoint terminal you just need to ask them to try it. Am sure bigger stores wouldn’t charge the 50p fee, but I’ve not found many others so good to just get it sorted!

    • Alex W says:

Nice, I’ve been trying to do this for ages! Will just ask them to try scanning the barcode next time instead of faffing about.

      • Alan says:

Definitely – they just need to scan code and then input the amount (£20) that you want to top-up by. Received email & app notification from Amazon whilst still in the shop for the £20 and email a few seconds later saying £5 discount voucher (as expected in the T&Cs only on items sold by Amazon) now available in my account until 31/12.

      • JamesB says:

Had same issues, then I just asked for a £20 paypoint payment and it was scanned with barely a second glance.

  • chris says:

    OT
Can anyone suggest a reliable (and decent) transfer service to get 2 people and 2 cases from Euston station to LHR T3 (and the Virgin Clubhouse!) on Wednesday late morning?

    • JamesB says:

There’s the bus right out front. No need to worry about the car not turning up, wait fees etc

    • Andrew says:

Depends on your own expectations really

I usually walk between Paddington and Euston when I take the Sleeper or a fast Virgin to Scotland. Takes about 35 minutes with luggage in tow. Can always tube it Too then onwards on the Heathrow Express.

If I was coming from Birmingham, I’d probably have gone into Marylebone as it’s a shorter walk or taken a Cross Country service to Reading and got the RailAir Link from there.

  • Matt says:

Slightly off topic – Marriott MegaBonus – has anyone unlocked the second offer yet after their two paid stays?
I am planning a series of Marriott stays next month, so need to know the offer before I book!

    • Steve-B says:

Yes, mine is: “Stay at any of our participating hotels and resorts worldwide by 15 January, 2018
Earn 10,000 bonus points after your next five stays, and then 1,000 more for every stay after that”

I’ve seen reports of another offer Marriott are offering that is based on 4,000 points after 2 paid stays. Not sure of any others. All a bit lacklustre really….

      • Matt says:

Thanks for the reply & information Steve. Not too exciting as you say!
Make sure you look at the NFL promotion for Marriott…
