An update on how you can redeem Avios points on Flybe

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I was chatting with the Avios team about Flybe redemptions and a couple of things came up which were news to me and so may also be news to you.

I don’t think any of it was meant to be secret but there had been no real effort to communicate it widely.

Here’s the first thing:  there are now Avios seats made available on ALL Flybe flights.  This mirrors the guaranteed availability offered by British Airways in Economy on its own services.

Redeeming Avios on Flybe

Secondly, there is no longer any difference in availability between what it shown on avios.com and what is shown on ba.com.  This was not always the case in the past.

Thirdly, to clarify what we wrote last week, ba.com will tell you that you do not get a checked baggage allowance on a Flybe redemption.  This is not true – even though your e-ticket will also tell you that you do not get a free suitcase.  At the airport it should be visible to the check-in staff that you do actually have a 1 x 23kg baggage allowance.  The call centre staff have been reminded of this anomaly and should no longer be giving incorrect advice to anyone who calls to enquire.

Flybe redemptions are not always good value because of the taxes and charges, but their pricing can be high on some of the niche routes and – adding in the free suitcase – it may work out OK.

You can take a look at the Flybe route network here.  Details of their Avios partnership are here.

There is definitely something amiss with the cleanliness of the BA fleet, on the way out to Tokyo recently I got such a bad throat infection I lost my voice for a week, after 3 weeks traveling I was fine only to return and gain a mouth infection causing my tongue to swell. Thinking back I had a bad throat after flying to Dubai in February, are they slack with the air conditioning, I haven’t had any problems with other airlines?

    • Anthony Dunn says:

Wow, so after the very many times that I have deployed my hand/face wipe instead to clean my table tray, arm rests and window surround – and receiving some quizzical and not so quizzical looks in return from CE/CW crew, the message finally got back to the powers that be. It’s only taken several years so that’s progress of sorts I suppose.

    • Kinkell says:

3 of us just back from Vienna last Friday. 4 flights. 2 of us now have really bad colds, headache, aches , and one of us is now on antibiotics. I blame the ventilation on the plane. Flew CW to Costa Rica in Feb. on a filthy 777. Used tissues down side of seat, grubby table , fraying carpet . Return from San Diego was on a sparkling, clean 747. A jolly good clean is long overdue , but Spending a bit more time / using more staff to properly clean between flights is what is needed.

      • Tilly says:

Oh dear. I hope they get around to our plane to/from Costa Rica by November. Don’t want to fly on a manky plane.

  • Thomas Howard says:

What was the point of Lloyds takeover of (UK) MBNA if they’re going to abandon branded loyalty cards? I appreciate the products needed reviewing in light of EU changes to charges but if you’re going to move towards issuing generic pointless cards that will likely lead to a loss of half your customers was it a worthwhile deal?

    • Rob says:

They didn’t pay much over the book value of the outstanding debt. It isn’t just travel cards, I think all of the football, charity etc cards are being closed too. MBNA had a huge portfolio which is now massively shrunk.

      • Lumma says:

It’s a scary thought that it could be just Creation and New Day offering loyalty credit cards soon other than AMEX and Virgin money

  • Down the Back says:

OT: Need to book a few (3 x 3 days) car rentals, what is the best earning opportunity ?

    Cheers

  • Alex W says:

Shouldn’t BA always be cleaning their planes anyway? Why are they promoting it as a good news story?

    • Thomas Howard says:

BA are Ryanair with long haul routes and premium pricing. They’re winning the race to the bottom.

    • L. Rocchi says:

After many long haul flights and being unwell afterwards we have now taken to cleaning all surfaces with antiseptic wipes as soon as we sit down in the aircraft. This has since cured the problem of first day holiday illnesses.
We have had many a strange look from others, passengers and crew but it works for us.
I am sure during the routine interflight cleaning, sanatizing the table top, arm rests and TV screens is not part of it. And after numerous flights you can only imagine how many peoples grubby fingers have been all over the place.

      • Peter K says:

My mum was in hospital a few years ago and there was one lady who did that. Everyone thought she was a bit strange….until she was the only one not to get an outbreak of sickness/diahorrea on the ward that is!

  • Alan says:

Bits OT – you can now enter your GE KTN in MMB on BA.com to get TSA Pre on flights within and departing the US. Can be found under the APIS section, still nowhere in the main profile to add it. Only applied to printed BPs at present though, mobile app needs to be updated to provide a more modern QR code that includes encrypted TSA Pre data.

  • Adrian says:

A couple of comments on BA. It is just sad that they are so poor and that cleaning their aircraft is news and they seem to be looking for praise for doing so. I chuckled to myself reading the VA piece on afternoon tea as BA apparently won’t let you have a scone if you have the tappas, but we all know BA is jam tomorrow, at least with VA you can have jam today!

Rob any insight on a QR sale, it’s been a while and I’m getting withdrawal symptoms.

    • Peter K says:

I’m sure a few years ago I was watching a TV piece on LCC and they have such a quick turnaround from one flight to the next that the cabin crew only have a few minutes to clean the plane/pick up rubbish and (I think Ryanair) even the co-pilot was helping them!
If most companies also have a quick turnaround to help profits/reduce costs then actually a deep clean IS newsworthy!

  • Geoff says:

Bits OT. Some questions yesterday on delays getting Amex cards. Referred from my BAPP to my OH on Monday and got an instant approval for her with me on supplementary card, but also this message ‘‘We have received your Supplementary Card(s) application and have one more thing on our end to finalise before we can say yes!’ and something about signing something and sending back. Anyway, today the cards arrived – nothing to sign and send back but otherwise pretty quick.

    Questions
Where do my referral avios get credited – to the BAPP thence to BA or straight to BA?
What is our next step? – refer from her to me for gold card?

    • Peter K says:

Avios for referral to the BAPP then across to BA at the next monthly sweep of points from the card.
Your next step depends on what card she holds and what you are aiming for. If you’ve not had an Amex membership reward card for over 6 months then yes going for that to gain the 22k bonus for being referred is a good choice.

    • Stu N says:

1 a) They will come through on your BAPP in 2 or 3 days from approval. They get swept over to BAEC with your normal monthly transfer.
1 b) I fear you’ve missed a trick by adding a supp at application. If you’d done it once up and running, there are reports of people getting 3-5k for that. Whoops.

      2) I think referral to Gold is probably sensible (22k with no fee) UNLESS you think you can get the benefit from Platinum (35k with 450 fee) – depends on how quickly you can hit the spend for sign-up as if you’re actively churning you’ll get a fee rebate and keep hotel statuses etc – see Rob’s article yesterday.
Also, add any supplementary cards after you’ve got your card up and running – people have reported a few thousand bonus MR points for doing that, vs. none at sign-up time.

      • Geoff says:

OK, thanks. I must have confused various mentions of ‘companion’ cards and ‘supplementary’ cards, never mind.

    • Craig says:

I got the can’t approve straight away message, 2 days later I was welcomed to paperless billing, the next day the card arrived and the day after that I got the email saying I’d been approved!

      • Lumma says:

        + 1

I’ve also received a paper letter saying that I’ve been approved and another email saying my card is activated and it’s ready to use. I know it’s ready to use, I’ve spent £600 on it already!

  • KSB says:

Bits OT – IHG Rewards Club Premium Credit Card: is the free night awarded as soon as you hit the spend or on the anniversary?

+1 on waiting for a good Qatar premium sale to come up….need flights to NZ for entire family in Feb.

    • Peter K says:

      On the anniversary.

    • Andy says:

On the anniversary on the Creation issued card.

    • Rob says:

      Anniversary.

    • Scallder says:

It was mentioned the other day that it’s the statement after your anniversary. My anniversary was 10th May but no voucher yet – statement is 23rd May so hopefully should be soon after that

      • KSB says:

        Thanks all

I see that on the US IHG credit card they have limited free night voucher to exclude the higher end hotels. I am hoping that UK version is still valid for full range of hotels.
