The new name for Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest will be ….

…. Marriott Bonvoy, it seems.  Which is a bit odd.

The name is, of course, a play on ‘bon voyage’.  Whilst there has been no official announcement, if you do a Google search for ‘Marriott Bonvoy’ you will find some trademark registration websites which show various recent Marriott filings under that name.

What appeared to be a Marriott test site was also accessible for a few hours last week.  It reportedly shows that Platinum Premier Elite will be renamed Titanium Elite whilst those on 100+ nights and with $20,000+ of spend will be called Ambassador Elite.  This means that Marriott Bonvoy will have FIVE elite levels:

  • Silver Elite (10-24 nights)
  • Gold Elite (25-49 nights)
  • Platinum Elite (50-74 nights)
  • Titanium Elite (75-99 nights)
  • Ambassador Elite (100+ nights and $20k of annual spend)

The new name for Marriott Rewards

In reality, benefits are very similar once you hit Platinum Elite, with the upgrades and the guaranteed 4pm check-out kicking in.  There are some screenshots on the One Mile At A Time site here.

To be honest, I had my money on ‘Marriott Preferred Guest’ or even ‘Marriott Rewards’ (ie no change) but it seems I underestimated Marriott.

Don’t forget that some nasty changes will happen to the Bonvoy redemption chart in January.  The new top category launches AND peak date pricing begins.  This means that the top redemption price jumps from 60,000 points per night to 100,000 points.  We will be covering this change more during December in case you want to lock in any stays.

  • BJ says:

Very bad news on DT Westminster. It wasn’t a very nice lounge but a good selection of snacks and booze in the evening ensured it was very popular. This was my favourite Hilton property in London but I’ll not be back now. What are the alternatives for a faily central property with a lounge that are usually in the 45-55k/night range? I’m not convinced Trafalger or Conrad are worth an extra 20k.

    • Joe Carr says:

      Hilton Bankside is very nice

      • Neil says:

Hilton Canary Wharf wins every time for me. Excellent lounge, lovely rooms and it’s right on the Jubilee Line. Oh and the breakfast is delicious.

    • BJ says:

Thanks to everybody for their feedback in this thread on alternative options with lounges, very useful.

  • Nick says:

No great loss, IHMO, at the DoubleTree Westminster, as the lounge is little more than a breakfast bar with no real comfortable seating available. The hotel is generally good though and the City Suites can be very reasonably priced for a central London Hilton property, some with a (slightly restricted) river view, especially in the Hilton sales.

    • Brighton Belle says:

I booked Westminster specifically because it’s one of the few Hilton properties with a lounge. After trawling around several UK Hilton’s with my Diamond Status I discover the automatic lounge access is useless because there aren’t many in the UK. And when there isn’t a lounge the front desk won’t even give you a drinks voucher. So my experience of Diamond status is to not bother with Hilton any more for UK stays. Aside from Tower Bridge and Bankside Is there anything in central London that is worth bothering with?

      • Brian says:

Metropole is not bad. The lounge is pretty big, though it gets crowded. The rooms are okay, too, since they generally give you a renovated one with a view over London. Close to Paddington and Edgware Road. I actually like Hilton Olympia’s lounge, though the unrefurbished rooms are old-fashioned there. The rates are always extremely low, unless there is an event on at Olympia. Park Lane has a good lounge, too.

      • Dale says:

I disagree entirely, there are heaps of London Hiltons and DTs with Executive lounges, much more so than you will find in USA. DT Tower of London and Hilton Tower Bridge are good examples centrally and personally I like the Hilton Wembley which is only 25 mins on Met line and often cheap as chips. Pity they have built flats right across the front of hotel tho!

        • Brighton Belle says:

According to the Hilton app ….In London it’s 15 Hilton’s of various brands with lounges out of an inventory of 33 properties so thanks for making me look at the facts. So it will be 14 out of 33 next year…(assuming you count Croydon as London). So you’re right there’s probably enough but essential to check before booking.

      • Doug says:

It was interesting to read the comment about so few Hiltons having an Executive Lounge. This experience has resonated with my own, foolishly I had believed all Hiltons would have a lounge and that my Diamond status would enable me to benefit from these. However, having booked many times across the country, I have been frustrated that most Hiltons do not have a lounge.

As someone else has done, I did a quick check on the app and found that only 26 across the UK do have a lounge. If 15 of those are in London that leaves only 11 across the rest of the UK.

      • Stuart_f says:

If you think Hilton Diamond short changes you with lounges in UK, try being Accor Platinum.

  • Nick says:

Good grief! I do wonder sometimes exactly how much time & money that these corporations spend on the likes of focus groups and branding specialists to come up with such ridiculous names! Unfortunately it’s often people that don’t use a brand, nor have any real experience of it, that come up with these names.

    • Alex W says:

I was outraged when my university spent something like £1m getting rid of its impressive, historical heraldic crest. What they came up with was “Imperial College London” in 2-tone Arial font. Nothing short of a scandal!

      • Shoestring says:

My university spent a colossal amount re-branding itself 30-odd years ago when I was there. They went for a simple design, it was effectively exactly as if somebody had got a highlighter and done a wavy squiggle through the name. £300K to you, sir.

Changed again I see or I’d link it.

        • Anna says:

And now they’re all complaining they’ve got no money!

          • Rob says:

When I was in the City we paid £25k to redesign our logo (works out at £1000 per full time employee at the time!). And then, a few years later when we wanted to tweak it, it turned out the contract was badly written and we didn’t actually own the logo – we were just leasing it – and had to hand over another £25k for a minor adjustment.

I paid a guy in Romania £200 for the HFP logo ….

        • Lady Lonson says:

By what method did you find your Romanian, Rob?

      • Shoestring says:

My niece got a First in Physics with Theoretical Physics 5 years ago @Imperial, Alex W!

        Whatever the hell that is.

      • Chris says:

Nice to see another IC alumnus reads HfP, Alex W. Agree completely about the logo.

Good chance I knew Shoestring’s niece too! Although as she got a First she probably didn’t spend as much time in the bar as me…

        • Shoestring says:

Better (both of us) not say her name but it was ‘Rebecca with rich boyfriend’.

        • Chris says:

Struggling. Unless your niece is blonde and Brummy in which case I definitely knew her!

I think your niece was a year above [the daughter of famous wizard related fiction author].

        • Shoestring says:

Sounds about the right age group as I studied French with Jo her mum! Very pleasant girl.

          Would that be JIRA?

        • Chris says:

That’s amazing! Small world indeed. She didn’t use the same surname as her mum so managed to keep a low profile.

Too late at night for me to work out what JIRA is. But I was at IC between from 2010 until quite recently so doubtless will have crossed paths and had mutual friends.

        • Shoestring says:

          Jessica Arantes

        • Chris says:

Ah yes gotcha. She didn’t use that surname. Instead think angry Scottish tennis player!

        • Shoestring says:

Not surprising if you’re worth £500m.

      • BJ says:

I think Alex is Faculty but I have not figured which Alex he is although I very much doubt he uses the corporate TA!

    • ankomonkey says:

After a long and presumably expensive review with a branding consultancy, my employer’s parent company came back with a new logo earlier this year. It was a very minor change to what we had before and was genius in its simplicity (read it was a basic change that a 5 year old could have come up with if given some coloured felt tip pens and the old logo).

  • tartan says:

OT Just spotted an offer on my BAPP of £10 off a £30 spend using the BPme app. Just a shame that I can’t personally take advantage as I drive an electric car!

    • Nick says:

Thanks Tartan. I just checked my Amex offers and it’s also on my Amex Gold Rewards card.

      • Shoestring says:

Cheers Tartan, will be checking out. Not that I’m much of an apps person lol but £10 off is £10 off

        Looks easy enough https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWyYluHQ2-Y

        • Shoestring says:

Got it 6x incl on Nectar.

Not a big user of BP (on price) but this swings it. I usually put in a half tank of premium BP diesel every other month just to get the benefit of the additives, they do in my experience make a big difference to smooth running. Alternative being Redex system cleaner, which is also good and a cheaper method to essentially do the same thing.

        • Rich says:

Cheers, got it on both of my cards.

Singup on the app seemed a bit long-winded, but all set and I need to fill up today anyway

        • Shoestring says:

BPme: installed the app, payment methods & Nectar card details – Nectar offers come up including 500 Nectar points when you fill up & swipe within 14 days – I assume that includes using the BPme app.

          • Rob says:

Can someone please cut and paste the details (or email me) of the BP offer? As I have never in my life bought petrol on an Amex card, Amex is not targeting anyone in my house with this one! Thanks.

          • Alan says:

Ahh OK I thought it was £10 off £10! A wee bit better than the Nationwide Visa offer but much more borderline for me given hassle/extra cost at BP (about 6p/litre more so wipes out about £2.50 of the saving!).

          • Rob says:

            Thanks

        • Shoestring says:

          Well, £30 @ £1.40/ litre is (21.4 x 6p) so more like £1.30

          • Alan says:

Fair comment @shoestring, was comparing cost for full tank but as you say this would only be for part – better with Amex offer where you have to spend £10 less ofc 🙂

        • Shoestring says:

You might want to ask for (say) £31 not just £30, see FAQ

Why did the pump stop before the amount I requested?
Your tank may have reached full before we got to the amount you requested. If this wasn’t the case then there may have been a problem with the pump. However, on some sites, we may need to stop the pump a little bit before your requested amount so that we don’t go over. But don’t worry, you’ll only be charged for the amount of fuel pumped.

          • Alan says:

Nationwide T&Cs said you’d be OK if up to £1 under – not sure if Amex take a similar approach tho.

    • Delbert says:

I’ve also got a Morrisons offer on my Amex Gold charge card of 10% back every time in-store or online. Offer end 31/12/18. A good offer in the run up to Christmas.

      • HeathrowFlyer says:

Will this work against Gift Cards?

        • TGLoyalty says:

Yep they can’t tell what you are buying from morrisons

        • Shoestring says:

They can tell if it’s petrol

        • TGLoyalty says:

the petrol stations have card terminals registered to a different company?

If you’re buying store no way amex will know it’s your weekly shop and a gift card.

        • Felix Flyer says:

I hope to buy stamps at 10% off too.

        • Shoestring says:

          Probably just recognisable as non-store

        • HeathrowFlyer says:

Can Morrisons gift cards then be used to buy petrol?

        • Shoestring says:

          @LHRFlyer – not any more

        • Shoestring says:

But the John Lewis gcs will also give you 10% off in Waitrose

        • RussellH says:

The Morrisons at which I usually buy fuel gets listed on the credit card slip and on the bill as “Morrisons Petrol Filling Station” or “Morrisons PFS”, making the fact blindingly obvious.

        • Bob says:

I was told by somebody at customer services the gift vouchers can be used for fuel. I haven’t tried yet, but if he was wrong I’ll insist on a refund, and I have retained the receipt in case. He was adamant they would work, and proud to have worked there for eleven years…we’ll see.

        • Mark2 says:

The £5 gift vouchers that you get for points with Morrisons More cannot be used to buy petrol, six months ago anyway.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Thanks got it on 6 cards 👍🏽

      • FlyUpTop says:

Has anyone seen the 10% back come back to your card/s yet?

        • Thomas Howard says:

I did a test purchase on Saturday that hasn’t come through yet. If this works I could be tempted to go bananas just before Christmas.

        • Alan says:

Took almost a week IIRC last time they had this offer a month or two ago.

        • AndyGWP says:

Yeah – spent £22 on 22nd Nov, got the rebate on my card on 25th Nov

        • Tracy says:

Yes, bought £300 amazon with my shopping got 10% back on all of it including the amazon gift cards. Bought 22nd, received credit today.

        • Tracy says:

Also got a till spit out for £5 credit when I bought amazon giftcards and shopping (don’t know what triggered the till spit out though) so I bought a £10 topshop gift voucher for £5 plus will get 10% back too, happy days 🙂

        • Shoestring says:

Till spit is for getting to 5000 More points, giftcards count towards points total

        • Tracy says:

Thanks shoestring. Don’t normally shop at Morrisons so first £5 earned.

        • Shoestring says:

I get around and (as supermarkets go), Morrisons beef is right up there with the best. Meat counter, pre-packaged meat, seafood – Morrisons pretty good. The only Big 4 supermarket to come out of horsemeat scandal smelling of roses.

    • BJ says:

Can it not be used to buy gift cards at the garage?

      • Shoestring says:

        No

      • TGLoyalty says:

No bpme is a pay at pump app so only fuel

        • Brian says:

@Felix Flyer – don’t you have the WhSmith offer of £5 back on £15 spending? Get 33% off your stamps that way…

        • Genghis says:

I’d advise using the WH Smith offer for a gift card and then stocking up on stamps with shop small.

        • Felix Flyer says:

@Brian @Genesis Alas no, I don’t have the WHSMITH offer. Good idea using Shop Small though

        • Mark2 says:

I’m hoping for a repeat of spend £10 get £5 back on Amex at Post Office in early December. Good for One4All cards.
          But I may be disappointed

    • Andrew says:

It’s been on the First Direct Visa Offers for a few months now (£5 off £40).

“Sorry, there is a fault.” Every single time I’ve tried to pay using the app (at more than one filling station).

      • Crafty says:

It’s been a week and I’ve had no acknowledgement of meeting the spend yet. Not looking forward to chasing this up as it’s unclear who to contact.

    • BTC says:

On my supplementary card, but not mine.
As my mum doesn’t own a smartphone, and still uses the same 1999 handset from M&S, I guess I’ll just set it up on mine!

    • Pug206 says:

Thanks for highlighting the BPme offer.

  • TGLoyalty says:

Didn’t think the Liverpool property was included in the deal with IHG and was going to be turned into flats or something.

Nice to see the grand will be a Kimpton

  • The Original Nick says:

BP offer on both my Amex Platinum and BA. Thanks

  • Rob says:

Supp must now have their own Amex online account and can upgrade via that

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I fell foul on this recently. It’s not that they must have their own account, it’s that they must have an additional account.

It is no longer possible to have Supp cards and main cards together. For example, I have Plat in my name and Gold as a Supp. For the Gold Supp I need to create a whole new online account/profile. This is new because only a few weeks ago I was able to do the same thing in reverse on my spouses account (She is primary Gold, added my Supp Plat).

Personally, I can’t be bothered to run multiple accounts so I’ve put my Gold Supp straight in the bin and relayed as such to AMEX.

      • Anna says:

You can add a supplementary card to a main account, I recently had this problem but managed to add my supplementary BAPP to my main account (currently BA blue) so avoiding having to make a new account.

      • N says:

Call Amex. Phone agents can force this through.

I have a mix of supps and main cards on my account

  • Sam says:

Small typo, fwiw. It’s Wotton House, not Wooton (if we’re talking about the De Vere in Dorking).

    • LB says:

I noticed Wotton House yesterday, for the first time, when I was looking to book the Intercon 02 for the Brits awards next year. It was listed within the Intercons London.

    • Rob says:

      Thanks
