Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How to get 40,000 Lufthansa Miles & More miles for €586

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is not an incredibly cheap deal, but you need to remember that you can’t buy Miles & More miles.  If you want to top up your account, you are reliant on a transfer from a hotel programme.

Via American Express Membership Rewards, the best route – which still isn’t great – is via Marriott Bonvoy.  1,000 Amex = 1,500 Marriott = 500 Miles & More.

Miles and More FAZ offer

Here’s the offer:

For €586, you can buy a digital subscription to Germany newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.  The link is here.  This comes with 40,000 Miles & More miles.

You are paying 1.25p per mile.  This is not cheap but if you have a firm plan for the miles it might make sense.

OT – i know this sort of thing get discussed a lot, but any recommendation on where to stay in dubai in May? There seems to be a number of different areas, so don’t want to find ourselves away from everything for the standard sights/activities.

We’re looking to stay for 3 nights sight-seeing before traveling onto Mauritius. Hotels seems crazy cheap (guessing because of the potential heat keeping people away), so we could maybe go for something proper snazzy for £150-200/night.

    • Si says:

      P.s.
Only hotel points i collect are IHG, so one of the ICs could work well if suitably located.

Some of the cash prices are actually cheaper than the Points & Cash prices so could easily pick up some points

    • Marcw says:

Tourism industry is very *soft* this year… That’s why prices are ridiculously cheap compared to previous years.

I’ve never stayed, and will never stay/visit Dubai, so I can’t really recommend anything.

    • Rob says:

Madinat Jumeirah complex (either Mina A Salam, Dar Al Masyaf – by far the best option if in budget, or Al Qasr) are your best bets. It is the best stretch of beach and the resorts are exceptionally well run.

Emyr @ Bon Vivant can book these – you’ll get free breakfast and $100 of credit, plus a room upgrade if in the hotels (doubt they can upgrade the villas).

      • Si says:

        Thank you for the tips
I’ll look them up when home from work.

I had thought of potentially seeing what Emyr could swing, but that was stage 2 or 3 of the plan.

Looking at Avios redemption, there is better availability to Abu Dhabi than Dubai. That really a taxi if get a taxi/bus to Dubai?

        • Rob says:

Yes, taxi to Madinat Jumeirah from AUH is 65 minutes and £40. From DXB it is 20 minutes and £20.

      • Michael says:

Mina Sa’lam is brilliant – along with Jumeirah beach (but it’s been 10 years since I stayed there). Had some great family holidays and some great memories in those hotels.

        • Rob says:

Still looks the same, albeit a full room refurb has been done and they’ve build Al Naseem on the side (which kills the views from some Mina rooms which are now sold at a discount).

      • Binks says:

Ramadan will also start in early May, so may mean certain restrictions in place and why good deals are available.

    • Jon says:

“don’t want to find ourselves away from everything for the standard sights/activities.”

Fear not, you’ll only be about 3000 miles away from everything and sights/activities
(needless to say, there is nothing in Dubai, trust me)

      • Rob says:

Apart from umpteen miles of beach, two world class waterparks, indoor ski slope, a VERY wide range of desert activities, world-class shopping, the new opera house, the La Perle Cique Du Soleil-clone water show, worlds tallest building, worlds best dancing fountain show, three major theme parks etc etc ….!

        • TGLoyalty says:

Plus some great bars and restaurants if thats your thing

        • Mr(s) Entitled says:

It’s only the world’s best dancing fountain show if you have never been to Vegas!

        • marcw says:

Plus human rights violations, men can hit women legally, no fair trials, modern slavery, no freedom os speech, no LGBT rights…. and a large etc etc.

        • TGLoyalty says:

There’s lots of that in many countries around the world including european ones (while laws might say different things are over looked or not tolerated)

But that’s a debate for another website. tbh I see some positives but I’d much rather visit other parts of the ME and the world every year.

        • Cat says:

Something being overlooked by a police officer that isn’t terribly interested in doing their job is a major worry, but abuse being enshrined in law is another thing entirely!

  • Will says:

OT – IHG just recived an email form IHG informing my email has changed, logged into my account and can see all my points have now been redeemed and my details are something completely different. On the phone to IHG now.

    • Craig says:

You’ve got to love the IHG 4-digit super secure PIN. Good luck.

    • Neil says:

Good luck, they should be able to cancel everything and give you back your points. Craig is spot on though, the 4 digit pin is a joke.

      • Optimus Prime says:

Indeed. They should extend it to 6 digits like Iberia 😀

  • Michael says:

Going to buy an ipad in America – does curve charge foreign exchange fees? if so, what is it?

    • Genghis says:

Which Curve do you have as that affects how much “allowance” you get. See Appendix, “Currency Conversion Fees” at https://www.curve.app/en-gb/terms
I’d probably use a credit card (ideally Lloyds Amex or even forgo the points and use Clarity) for extra protection, however.

    • Anna says:

Are they actually cheaper (especially with the current exchange rate)? We bought our first ipad in Miami about 7 years ago, but couldn’t get it cheaper than in the UK once they had added on the pesky sales tax. We bought it anyway as we wanted to use it on holiday. Also the plugs you get with it don’t work in the UK!

      • Anna says:

Though the plug thing might not be an issue as USB ports are far more ubiquitous these days.

        • Evan says:

I find the difference in tech prices are more pronounced between the UK and US now.

      • Michael says:

Well – i’ll tell you the actual story. I said it was for me for simplicity – but my uncle (who isn’t a points collector) wants to buy one when we are over there in 2 weeks and I’m seeing it as an opportunity to get some Virgin FC miles through curve. What the actual prices and how much cheaper it’s going to be i’m not sure.

        • Evan says:

according to respective Apple stores basic 9.7 model US$329 – UK£319, so £70 saving unless I’m missing something on the sales tax front which is quite possible.

    • BJ says:

I recommend getting it from globalcentral, now bought three in the past year without issues.

    • Mr Dee says:

Try Heathrow Boutique usually good prices

      • Mr Dee says:

but wait until their event on the 25th of this march incase of updates

  • Down the Back says:

OT: If I book a Hilton using points to part reduce the cash price does this still qualify as a cash stay, I’m particularly interested in would it trigger the10k points as this is my 5th stay and would it count towards stays for the year ?

    Thanks

    DtB

    • Lee says:

It will trigger bonus and count towards stays for the year no matter if its cash or points

    • John says:

But to answer your question, yes, it’s considered a paid stay.

In theory the only differences between paid and award nowadays, are that you can’t book paid stays for somebody else (in the proper way approved by Hilton), and that resort fees would be charged at the properties that have them.

      • BJ says:

I thought Hilton didn’t charge resort fees, has something changed? I certainly wasn’t charged them with my most recent such stay being last autumn.

  • Doug says:

My hilton offer disappeared from my plat card, weird as I have spent £250 now, but maybe some of them didn’t count?

    • John says:

If it disappeared then it would seem that it did count? Or expired?

    • BJ says:

I’ve had offers disappear and reappear a number of times lately. Sometimes all of them go.

  • Jtz says:

Need some help on moving points.
I moved enough Amex points for a 5 nights for 4 high end redemption for Hilton combined with OH’s points
I have 79k left to move, and was going to move them to Kris flyer to start a balance for a middle East business flights redemption for bothof us, or start the balance for Europe to sin flight in business both of us….
But I started to think of hotels and i was wondering what hfp readers think of moving to marriott? OH and I will both hopefully have the 33k from Amex spg by the end of the month,
What are the sweet spot marriott redemptions? I know with the merger, it’s gone higher, but would love to know any ideas you have? Esp combines with 5 nights for 4, also a potentiality of moving OH Amex gold bonus to marriott.
Up for anything that is valuable compared to cash price.

    Thanks

Will be cancelling Amex Plat and Amex spg by the end of the month too and would love recommendations of what else I can or should take. Preferably without a fee.
Amex ba card seems maybe ideal with 18k referral but only have 50k in avios so would need to build a balance first…
    Thanks a lot

    • Shoestring says:

You lost out big time! 🙂

You’d have been a lot better off transferring direct Amex—>BA Avios.

You’re just having a laugh, right?

How many Amex points was it lol?

      • Rob says:

Yes, not good. Amex is 2:3 to Marriott but then 3:1 to Avios.

        So …. 5000 Amex = 7500 Marriot = 2500 Avios + 30% = 3250 Avios. Or, going direct, 5000 Amex = 5000 Avios ….

      • TGLoyalty says:

Unless it was a top up to get to 60k like you say bad deal.

  • Craig says:

OT: Has anyone used the Amex lounge at the O2 recently, I see it’s now first come first served? Also, has anyone been after a show, staying at the IC so won’t be in a rush?

  • mark e says:

O/T sorry if this is a frequent question .
How long does a Tesco Clubcard to BA Exec Club Avios transfer take please?
