Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How to get 40,000 Lufthansa Miles & More miles for €586

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is not an incredibly cheap deal, but you need to remember that you can’t buy Miles & More miles.  If you want to top up your account, you are reliant on a transfer from a hotel programme.

Via American Express Membership Rewards, the best route – which still isn’t great – is via Marriott Bonvoy.  1,000 Amex = 1,500 Marriott = 500 Miles & More.

Miles and More FAZ offer

Here’s the offer:

For €586, you can buy a digital subscription to Germany newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.  The link is here.  This comes with 40,000 Miles & More miles.

You are paying 1.25p per mile.  This is not cheap but if you have a firm plan for the miles it might make sense.

  • BJ says:

@Rob, I have 18k Lufthansa miles left to get rid off. Do you know of anyway to transfer them (apart from points pooling) to somebody who might use them? Otherwise, I guess I am best just to redeem them for hotels or gift cards which I believe are of similar value?

    • AndyGWP says:

Can you still convert them to Heathrow Rewards? (not sure how that would compare to hotels / gift cards?)

      • BJ says:

I think it is the same value as other giftcards IIRC. The offer on the newspaper is tempting but a little too expensive unless I can add to it to do another First redemption.

      • Rob says:

Heathrow Shopping Vouchers – not HR, so no way of using for other miles. Or, yes, use them for a hotel discount via their portal.

      • BJ says:

Thanks for feedback. I think I’ll just sit on them for a while yet and see if anything more interesting comes along..

    • Concerto says:

Use a mileage bargain to Germany or Switzerland for 15,000 miles on LH or LX. Interestingly, the whole Croatia Airlines network is up for 15,000 miles RT just now (travel period May June I think). A one way within the US or Asia represents really good value too.

      • BJ says:

Will try to get enough Marriott points again and hold onto the 18k in hope of a suitable longhaul bargain at the right time. Failing that I will convert to gift cards before expiry.

  • AndyGWP says:

OT – I’ll soon be triggering my voucher for the Virgin Credit card, so having a speculative look at redemption opportunities (and taxes!). Does anyone know why routes are blocked by Virgin for redemption?

    https://www.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/flying-club/miles/spend-miles/reward-flights.html

Using the above URL, if I want to go from LHR to LAX, it says they are all blocked before you’ve even selected your cabin, or dates. (“Aah, sorry. You can’t use your miles for this route. If it’s highlighted it means it isn’t eligible for now.”)

If I check RewardFlightFinder there’s bags of availability from LHR to LAX (because no-one can book it maybe? 😂)

    • Chas says:

That must be a change (or a glitch – worth checking with their customer service team?), as I have 4 redemption flights (incl 2 x 241 vouchers) booked LHR-LAX this summer.

      • James says:

Any tips on visiting California please? (accommodation, car hire, to-do)

        • Rob says:

Most car hire firms in California allow you to drop off in a different city for no extra cost. Take advantage of this to do an open jaw holiday.

        • Shoestring says:

San Fran – yes, it’s great
          LA – no – it’s a waste of time

          • Rob says:

Getty Museum is worth visiting and a night on the Queen Mary cruise ship turned hotel would be interesting too.

        • Lyn says:

San Diego is also worth visiting. As Rob says, consider an open jaw for flights. Booking a car via BA/Avis gives a free second driver and usually free 1-way drop off,

        • Kevin says:

Yes the Getty in LA is wonderful and there is good contemporary art downtown these days.

Then there’s movie studio tours plus Universal Studios and Disneyland (in Anaheim not LA).

        • Shoestring says:

OK I wouldn’t mind visiting the Getty though the other LA suggestions are not for me! A whistlestop LA visit – purely for the Getty – then on to SF, taking in some wineries and beaches – sure that sounds great. The trouble with San Diego is it’s in the wrong direction but I’d love to go there, too.

I really didn’t like LA – but horses for courses, as always!

        • Kayleigh says:

          Ooh where to start!
We went in September last year and had a fabulous time.
We booked flights and car hire with BA and got a good deal on purchasing together. We got a convertible mustang from Avis and it was just ace!
I wasn’t expecting to enjoy SAN Francisco as much as I did – we stayed at StayPineapple at The Alise which was lovely. Also Pearl’s Burgers is just around the corner and is literally the best burger and chips I have ever had.
We loved Lake Tahoe and went on some fabulous hikes, and even saw a wild bear at very close range (exhilarating, amazing, terrifying experience!). Yosemite was absolutely stunning but much much busier than Lake Tahoe.
If in Las Vegas you must see a Cirque du Soleil show – amazing experience.
          Have a fab time!

        • Anna says:

If in Southern California, Death Valley and the Palm Springs area are stunning places to see, I wouldn’t go in the height of summer though!

        • Kevin C says:

I completely understand why anyone wouldn’t like LA. It depends what you’re into.

For anyone who does chose to go some hotels to consider include: Shutters On The Beach, The Beverly Hilton, The Sunset Marquis, The Sunset Tower, and if you really want to be sure to run into celebs – The Chateau Marmont. They’re all good places for dinner if you don’t stay there.

        • Darren says:

Sonoma and Healdsburg are lovely with a stop in Sausalito when visiting San Fran.

      • Clive says:

Into LA and take PC1 to SFO. Stop off in the wine region and some lovely beach resorts

    • Alan says:

I can see reward seats available LHR-LAX on Virgin’s site so I don’t know why you can’t

      • Alan says:

40K miles and £299.82 for economy

        • Alan says:

The link works for me. Put in your dates and select cash payment. When the options come up you can select “Miles” as a payment option on the top of the page. Click on that and it should show the fares in miles.
Currently there is availability in all classes on that date.

If you are still having problems try using a different browser or device

        • AndyGWP says:

Working now!… (changed nothing!). That was weird!?

          Sorry everyone 🙈

        • Clive says:

Worth taking a look at the cash+miles prices too

  • Cal says:

OT – Where does the virgin 2 for 1 appear? I thought I had spent £10,000 but my most recent statement doesn’t have anything in it.

    • Rob says:

There should be a line item on your Flying Club account statement.

      • Cal says:

I can’t seem to see it. I’ve spent £10,000 and been awarded 15,000 miles so does it take a few days to appear? Or should I chase Virgin Money?

        • Chas says:

When I thought I had triggered mine last year it didn’t appear immediately, and when I called Virgin Money was told that it would trigger on the next statement date. But when I logged in the following day it had already triggered and was showing in my account. When my wife triggered hers last year, it showed in her account the next day. Conclusion? Virgin’s IT systems are rubbish….

    • Chas says:

Virgin’s systems don’t seem to be anywhere near as sophisticated as we might be used to from Amex. You don’t get a notification on your statement.

    • Mr Dee says:

its in your flying club account as a statement once met

    • Alan says:

Yep, its very easy to miss. “Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card – Reward Qualification”

  • Jovanna says:

I booked a flight with Amex on 28 Feb to make use of the £200 off, if you spent over £600 offer, which expired that day. I did this late in the evening. The confirmation email arrived within a few minutes but the invoice arrived in the small hours of 1 March.

The pending amount was dated 28 Feb but the charge has hit my account today and it shows the transaction date as 1 March.

Have I dipped out on the offer or are Amex likely to be flexible if contact them via Live Chat?

    • TGLoyalty says:

The same happened to me but just had the credit so would give it 24 hours or so

    • Louise says:

If u had the confirmation email saying you have redeemed the offer than you shouldn’t have any issues!

      • Jovanna says:

It was the email confirming the booking, not confirmation of redeeming the offer. Sorry that I wasn’t clear.

    • Paul says:

I did 2 bookings via mine and my wife’s cards on 26th, which sat pending until 3rd, then the £200 credit for each appeared on 7th. Sit tight, should be fine….

    • AlexT says:

I did something similar. First got a confirmation e-mail that the offer had been redeemed. Then on March 1 got an e-mail that the offer had expired. 2 days later the transaction posted on my account. 2 days after that I got the rebate as expected…

    • Lev441 says:

I just got the credit today and I booked I. The same situation as you. It should be with you soon!

  • Victor says:

That picture doesn’t look so inviting – looks like my local branch of Currys

    • Michael says:

To be fair – I think that’s their slightly older 747 business product. Their 787-9 has the Cathay/American Airlines style Business seats which look a lot nicer.

    • Andy says:

I’m getting a “cult indoctrination room” vibe from it with the screens all showoing the same thing.

  • Alex W says:

OT @ Harry. I’m still waiting for this Orbis ISA sign-up offer to materialise!! Getting a bit late now, any other good ISA sign-up deals going?

    • Rob says:

Could be something coming next week …

      • Shoestring says:

If there’s another Orbis one for the new fiscal, I’m not sure sure if they’d announce it much ahead of April 6th.

Others might be trying to capture (very) late 2018-19 ISA investors. as well.

  • Mr(s) Entitled says:

I’m tempted by the MAN-MAD in Business. Does anyone have any recent experience of what to expect?

The comments in the review from Oct 2017 indicated that this service is not catered but you get a choice from the Buy on board menu. Not overly appealing but I’d suffer that for decent lounge access at MAN. Without a decent lounge, it”s looking like Econ out and Bus back because I cant see any reason to pay more for the same seat on the outbound.

As a practical matter. Can I see availability without combining my avios?

    • Anna says:

I’d also like to try this sometime. If it leaves from T3 I would assume you would be allowed in the BA lounge as a One World partner. Your don’t say if you’ve used the lounge, it’s ok but doesn’t do much in the way of hot food (muesli, toast and the odd dried up pastry at breakfast). It’s our usual alternative to being turned away from the Escape Lounge with our Priority Pass or Lounge Club cards!

You can see availability even if you don’t have enough avios, however you need to do a dummy booking with the number of seats you will need as the system is not like the BA one which says “7 available” or whatever even if you’re only booking for one person. I think this caught out another HFP reader recently.

      • Mr(s) Entitled says:

        Anna,

Thanks for the reply. I’ve fond memories of the BA lounge from times of yore although I suspect this is more related to a hankering for my youth than their stale sandwiches. I might give the 1903 lounge a whirl.

Just waiting for Iberia to process my forms to supply me with a PIN and then I think I’ll take advantage. 25% isn’t a huge saving but Madrid has been on my list for a while so it’s enough to spur me on.

  • RussellH says:

Anyone recently paid for a stay at a Moxy in the UK with a Creation Marriott Mastercard?
If so did you get double points on your card spend?
