Avis has launched two bonus Avios promotions – as well as a prize draw giving away 100,000 Avios.

The two Avios promotions are

  • If you book an Avis car in mainland Spain for three days or more in August, you will receive 500 bonus Avios
  • If you book an Avis car worldwide for five days or more in September or October, you will receive 1,000 bonus Avios

This is on top of the minimum 700 base Avios you will earn, meaning that you are guaranteed to receive at least 1,200 or 1,700 Avios depending on the offer.

Avis bonus avios

Here is a summary of the small print:

You must rent a Group C or above car

You must book before 31st August 2019

You must pick up the car before 31st August (Spain offer) or between 1st September and 31st October (worldwide offer)

You must use a British Airways / Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number, which we list below, when booking

Valid for all participating rental locations worldwide (list of participating venues is here on the Avis / BA website)

This Avios bonus is not valid on Prestige, Van or Chauffeur Drive rentals

You can check out the full details on the Avis / British Airways website here.

How many Avios will I earn?

Mainland Spain offer

You will earn 500 bonus Avios, on top of your base Avios, with a qualifying car rental in mainland Spain.

For a 3+ day rental, which is what is required here, your base earnings will be 3 Avios per £1 with a minimum of 700 Avios. This gives you a minimum of 1,200 Avios per qualifying rental.

This offer is for bookings made by the end of August and cars need to be picked up by 31st August, so you don’t have long.

British Airways Anniversary offer

You will earn 1,000 bonus points on top of your base Avios with every qualifying car rental worldwide.

For a 5+ day rental, which is what is required here, your base earnings will be 3 Avios per £1 with a minimum of 700 Avios. This gives you a minimum of 1,700 Avios per qualifying rental.

Rental cars must be booked by 31st August and picked up between 1st September and 31st October 2019.

Note that you will also earn an additional 250 Avios if you pay for your rental with a British Airways American Express Credit Card (this also includes the British Airways American Express Premium Plus card). Assuming you do pay with a BA Amex card, you will earn a minimum of 1,950 Avios and potentially more depending on how much you spend.

There is cap of 10,000 Avios per rental – although you’d need to spend over £3,000 before that becomes a problem.

A prize draw

To celebrate BA’s 100th birthday, BA and Avis are giving away a total of 100,000 Avios.

There are 10 prizes of 10,000 Avios to be won and you can enter multiple times.

The competition is open to UK residents only and you will get one entry per approved reservation made between 1st August and 31st August:

You must rent a Group C or above car

You must pick up and return the car between 1st September and 31st October

You must use a British Airways / Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number, which we list below, when booking

Incomplete, cancelled and/or declined reservations will not count as an entry

You can find the T&Cs on the Executive Club offers page here.

The draw is separate to the bonus Avios offers.  Your rental will get you entry into the draw even if it does not qualify for a bonus.

Are there any other Avios bonuses available?

Avis also has two other Avios bonuses you can collect on top of this offer:

If you join Avis Preferred for free you will collect an additional 1,000 bonus Avios on your first Preferred rental

If you rent with Avis four times in a calendar year, you will earn 1,000 bonus Avios

If you book via the British Airways discount codes below, you will also receive a free additional driver. This can represent a decent saving and is one of key perks of the Avis / BA partnership.

How do I book?

Avis and BA have a dedicated booking site which you can find here and which automatically adds the correct discount code.

If you use avis.co.uk, you will need to manually add the British Airways discount codes (AWD) which are, based on your British Airways Executive Club status:

Gold members – N744400

Silver members – N744300

Bronze members – N284300

Blue members – N744100

Full details of this offer and all of the partnership benefits are on the Avis / BA website here.

  • Memesweeper says:

Apart from Avis, any other tips for a long-ish term UK car rental? Probably two to four weeks. Pickup ideally from London, or a London airport.

  • AJA says:

Why only Group C and above for entry into the draw? That discriminates against people renting Group A or B. The competition should be open to all.

I can sort of understand the bonus Avios being Group C as that incentivises you to spend more but even so as an anniversary offer that’s a bit off.

I booked and paid in July for a Group A car for rental in Spain in early Sept for 8 days so am not eligible. Not going to cancel and rebook as I don’t want a Group C car but might call the Exec Club to complain about their restrictive draw!

    • Rob says:

A lot of car rental promos have a Group C rule …. no idea why, I admit.

    • RussellH says:

I quite agree. I am not planning to hire a car, so not affected, but when I do I always book the smallest car available.
Does not seem to have much effect on the size of the car actually offered though!

    • Bob says:

It could be more Group C cars are available during holidays.

Group A & B are sold easyly maybeand do not need a promo.

    • Rich says:

Why all the moral indignation? It’s a way of restricting the promo to higher spenders, and/ or driving up your spend. That’s Avis’ right! If you’re purely price driven, you’re not going to be persuaded by promotions anyway.

  • sunguy says:

Does anyone know if this includes already booked hires using the AWD?

  • Jonny says:

I’d be very wary about making a rental booking based on these incentives. I booked a car during the last BA/Avis promotion in April following all the criteria and have not received any Avios from it, not even the 250 bonus Avios for using BAPP.

    • Lady London says:

I have found Avis to be unreliable on points promotions too.

    • AJA says:

Jonny Thanks for the warning. I have printed the BA confirmation booking for the possibility I have to claim my Avios afterwards.

I understood the Avios including bonus for using BAPP are supposed to post affter the rental.

Have you tried claiming for missing Avios?

  • Andrew M says:

I just booked a car from Jerez airport in Spain via car hire – BA website
There was no option to book with AVIS even tho they have a presence at this airport so i booked with Budget on the same website. It saved 10 percent via this website BUT almost ended up making a double booking – after the credit card verification screen appeared i was told that the booking failed due to credit card payment failure but when i used the back button, i saw a booking reference then 10 minutes later, my confirmation email arrived, so be careful !

  • Dawn says:

O/T I’ve just found out about the driive.me website where you can get a car for £1 for a one way journey. For example, Basingstoke to London Heathrow. Very useful if you are able to use it as most go to the airports. Has anyone used this?

    • Pierr says:

Avoid at major airports, as the cars will generally be at a nearby depot and if you get there late afternoon the depot might be closed for the day…
Happened to me twice at CDG, never again.
