    I’ve booked a one-night stay at the 100 Queen’s Gate Curio in May (it was supposed to be 2 nights but then the bank holiday was moved!), so would be interested to hear any views. Chose it primarily for proximity to the Saatchi Gallery.

        It’s not super-near the Saatchi (we live next to the Saatchi, and my daughter is at Queen’s Gate school, so I know the route) although it’s a nice walk down. Admittedly it’s the nearest Hilton. Feedback is decent unless you get one of the basement rooms.

        MyHotel Chelsea, which is OK, or the Sloane Square Hotel (never been inside) are 90% closer. You’ve also got the biggies on Sloane Street – Millennium, Jumeirah Lowndes (Carlton Tower is closed), Belmond Cadogan. An interesting cheaper option is the Pestana, technically in Battersea but only about 90 seconds from Battersea Bridge. Not much else going on in the area apart from the park and the new Battersea Power Station development though.

    I’ve stayed in all except Curio

    If you’re on a holiday they are not the best options as the hotel is either crowded (metropole) or have cramped rooms (hyde park)

    The best hotel is hands down Hilton Bankside

    Massive variety hotel. Metropole is one of the biggest hotels in London, rubbish location, an old Stakis. Queen’s Gate is a fully refurbed Victorian town house hotel, just reopened. Paddington is fine (I am 60 seconds from it as I type). One of the Hyde Park ones just had a full refurb – forgotten which – but very touristy and on a busy road. Queen’s Gate is probably best.

    Why not Bankside, Lincoln Plaza or Conrad? Those are the three nicest.

  Just a quick reminder that Flybe have a small hand luggage size and their sizing cages are only about 2mm bigger. It is very easy to get stung for £50. We removed the wheels from our hand luggage to avoid being ripped off on our return journey earlier in the year.
  You are likely to need suitable luggage just for them, when I checked of the 50 plus small wheeled cases John Lewis had on sale none were small enough.

    Buy a carry on bag without wheels? I have the Lowe Alpine AT carry on 45 bag, it’s soft and can be carried with either a shoulder strap or it has two hidden straps to turn it into a backpack. Fits easily on Flybe tiny overheads on the dash 800 unless I really overfill it and often is allowed past the gate agents when they’re making everyone else gate check their bags

    It’s irritating, but not exactly a “rip-off” by FlyBe.

    The “rip-off” is when you pay £100 for an item that is clearly marked as being 35cm wide, but you find it’s actually 36.5mm wide when you measure it at home. A useful tip is, if you are shopping for luggage in TK Maxx, there are always measuring tapes for sale in the men’s gift & homeware sections.

    As for wheels. “Spinners” waste about 3.5 litres of luggage capacity and ordinary two wheels a bit of capacity. I’d love a really simple solid case with now wheels, a recessed handle, and no TSA gubbins that exactly fits a Flybe hand luggage cage.

      Gate 8 used to do a full garment bag with detachable laptop bag that by some miracle was flybe compliant. Check out their website they have many bags and airline sizing compliance guides.

      Thule Subterra 40L carry on bag. Its firm enough to keep your bits protected but also has a bit of give to squeeze into sizers. Its a great weekend carry on bag plus looks fairly “business” also.

    The issue I have with FlyBe is that even when my backpack (i.e. soft-sided) fits within their cabin luggage limits, their planes are so small that (those departing LCY at least) I couldn’t fit it in the overhead bin and had to stuff it underneath the seat in front of me, leaving me with no legroom.

  OT: after suggestions on this site we are looking between Cebu & Phuket for our beach break from HK for Easter.
  We will have 4 full days. Would this be sufficient time for Cebu? Where would be the best area to stay – we would prefer a beach hotel but would like to do sightseeing.

    Rob – Just booked the new DT Harrogate Majestic in this sale. Hopefully the £15MM refurb will be fully completed by the time I stay there. (Recent mixed reviews on Tripadvisor from folks staying during the works over the summer.)

  Re Hilton sale, the rates (at least where I’m looking, Heathrow Terminal 4) marked “HILTON HONORS SALE” say “NO BREAKFAST”. No breakfast is the default for most Hilton properties so is this just saying that or does it actually mean that Gold and Diamond members have to pay for breakfast (in which case it is a very bad deal if having breakfast)?

      Thanks, a bit silly of them to put “NO BREAKFAST” against a specific Honors rate given that most people booking that rate will actually get a free breakfast!

        No it isn’t. The onus is on the Gold/Diamond member to select the desired benefit, at Hilton you choose between extra points or free breakfast.

        eg If you are about to get a morning VS UC flight it makes sense to get the extra HH points & skip breakfast at the Hilton and enjoy it in the Clubhouse.
