Hilton Sheffield hotel to close in December

Anyone travelling to South Yorkshire in 2020 should note that the Hilton Sheffield hotel is closing for good on 15th December.

According to The Star, the operator has surrendered the lease on the building.

It is possible that the owner decides to re-lease it to another hotel operator, although it could be turned into offices or apartments.

I stayed here once a couple of years ago and it was totally acceptable.  The location is pleasant but competition has been increasing – a Holiday Inn Express opened immediately behind it, and the downtrodden Holiday Inn – also directly behind it – has been reborn this Summer as Crowne Plaza Royal Victoria Sheffield.

There are two other Hilton options in Sheffield but neither is great for the business traveller.  The DoubleTree is out of town whilst the Hampton Sheffield is in a weird location and, whilst nominally central, is likely to still need a bus, tram or taxi to get you to where you need to be.

The Hilton Sheffield website is here.

How to earn Hilton Honors points and status from UK credit cards

How to earn Hilton Honors points and status from UK credit cards (April 2025)

There are various ways of earning Hilton Honors points from UK credit and debit cards.  Many cards also have generous sign-up bonuses.

There are two dedicated Hilton Honors debit cards. These are especially attractive when spending abroad due to the 0% or 0.5% FX fee, depending on card.

You also receive FREE Hilton Honors status for as long as you hold the debit cards – Gold status with the Plus card and Silver status with the basic card. This is a great reason to apply even if you rarely use it.

We reviewed the Hilton Honors Plus Debit Card here and the Hilton Honors Debit Card here.

You can apply for either card here.

OT: I’m arriving into Lima from Cusco at 21.43. I’m then looking to book the 09.23 departure to Sanitago in LATAM (Chile) business. Has anyone been in the LATAM lounge before? Any places to sleep?

    • Kevin C says:

I was in the LATAM lounge in Santiago this summer. I don’t remember any sleep pods but may not have seen all of it. There is a very good Holiday Inn directly opposite the terminal and personally I would check in there and sleep in a bed.

      • Kevin C says:

Oh hang on, you’re in Lima. Don’t know, sorry.

        • EvilDoctorK says:

My memory of the LATAM lounge ( at least I think it was the LATAM lounge – I guess I would have been in it on an American Airlines departure ) is that it was rather small – definitely no sleep options

There’s a hotel right outside the door of the airport ( Wyndham Hotel – it’s supposed to be fairly decent ) .. we considered it , but ended up staying downtown … on a short layover like you are proposing probably the best option .. while the airport isn’t that far out the traffic can be bad

          • EvilDoctorK says:

… sorry not clear at the end .. meant to say that on a fairly short layover like you are considering definitely better to stay at the airport .. the Wyndham is the only one you can walk to from the terminal ( it’s about 20 yards!) … There’s no point in going downtown on that short a layover.

  • Anna says:

I’m tempted to buy IHG 200,000 points as that would give us very nearly 3 nights at the GCM Kimpton which can hit $1000 per night at peak time. Or 8 nights at the Holiday Inn!

O/T – How long does a Radisson rewards transfer take from Amex MR? Thankyou

    • RussellH says:

Around a week in me experience. Certainly nothing like as fast as Hilton or Marriott.

  • rob says:

    OT

Berry Bros wine offer on Amex. Spend £150 get £30 back. I understand this technically shouldn’t work on gift card purchases but will that likely be the case do we think?

    Thanks

  • Nick says:

    OT:

    o2 Arena in London

I am going this weekend and have already bought tickets. Any special benefits/access to be had if I have an Amex Plat or member of any loyalty scheme etc?

Have not been to this venue in years

    • Rob says:

You can use the Amex lounge – search for our article.

There is also the Virgin / Delta bar, not sure if that isn’t open to all now though.

    • SimonW says:

There is a decent Amex lounge at the 02. Cant pre-book, just show your Amex to get in. I think with 3 or 4 guests allowed too.

      • Zoe says:

You get a ticket from customers service just underneath the big staircase. I think they allowed 4 guests. As you actually enter the lounge each guest with an Amex card in their hand gets a voucher for a free drink. They jot down the names on the cards so you can’t just give your guests extra cards of yours to carry. I think you also get a free bottle of water at the main bars if spending over a certain amount on Amex.
They also serve food in the lounge, google will bring up the menu.
All from the John Mayer concert in October

  • Alan says:

OT – I’m due to be landing at London City tomorrow morning, about 20 minutes or so before the rugby kicks off.

Anyone have any suggestions of somewhere to watch the game at/near the airport, before making our way to the hotel in town?

    • Bill says:

I think the there are tv’s showing news channels in the airport. Whether they’ll change to the rugby I have no idea. My suggestion would be to jump on the DLR and find a pub a station or two away

    • Alan says:

Get the DLR to Woolwich. The Dial Arch on the other side of the main road should have the game up on the screens. You can get the train into Central London from same station.

    • Lady London says:

Could you watch it on your phone?

      • Spaghetti Town says:

ITV Player will show it. You could watch it in the nearest coffee shop on the wifi.

        • Lady London says:

Wondering if LCY has reliable wifi it’s a while since I used that airport.

  • EwanG says:

OT: Tesco – Virgin Flying Club auto-convert 1,000 bonus mile offer on again. You must sign up between 1 Nov and 13 Dec to qualify. Bonus miles can only be earned once.

    • Dave Barron says:

Indeed – but just remember to switch off the auto convert once bonus points have posted. Most recently I got the 1000 auto convert points on 9th July and then thought I’d logged into Tesco to switch back to vouchers. Alas no I mustn’t have done so as the most recent Tesco points then converted to Virgin on 22nd October! 6375 extra Virgin miles as a consequence (plus no sign of any bonus points either) and I’d prob rather have kept the vouchers for future flexibility.

    • Spaghetti Town says:

Where’s the link to do this? Can’t seem to find it…

      • Benilyn says:

I got it as an email from VA, subject “Your Flying Club statement has landed” , at the bottom of the email

  • S says:

O/T: Rob, have you picked up any goss on BA strike? FT reckons big news today

    • Rob says:

BA has caved in and made a generous proposal to BALPA. It will decide today whether to recommend it. We put this on Twitter yesterday – I had it first.
