LATAM leaving oneworld on 30th April – earlier than we expected

As we covered last September, Latin and South American airline LATAM is to leave the oneworld alliance following the announcement of an equity and flying partnership with US airline Delta.

Once LATAM leaves oneworld, you will not be able to earn Avios and tier points on its services.

It is possible that you may retain the ability to earn Avios if British Airways or Iberia retain bilateral partnerships with LATAM outside of oneworld.  However, it is very unlikely that you would earn British Airways Executive Club tier points.

LATAM to leave oneworld on 1st October 2020

We thought LATAM was leaving oneworld on 30th September.  This was the date being quoted by Qantas on its website.

It turns out this was overtly optimistic.

Last night oneworld put out a statement to say that LATAM was leaving oneworld on 30th April.

This is what is happening and how it impacts your ability to earn and spend Avios:

LATAM Airlines Group will end its membership in the oneworld alliance effective 1 May 2020, following the group’s decision to leave the alliance.

oneworld benefits for LATAM customers will be offered on oneworld flights up to and including 30 April 2020. LATAM Pass members will not receive oneworld frequent flyer benefits offered by Royal Air Maroc, which joins oneworld effective 1 April. LATAM will not offer oneworld frequent flyer member benefits to Royal Air Maroc Safar Flyer members.

oneworld member airlines will continue to serve more than 30 airports in Central and South America, with more than 100 flights to and from the region daily, offered by American Airlines, British Airways, Iberia, Qantas, Qatar Airways as well as member-elect Royal Air Maroc.

A number of oneworld member airlines plan to maintain frequent flyer agreements with LATAM after 30 April. Customers are advised to contact their airlines or visit the airlines’ frequent flyer programme websites for more information.

For more information on oneworld benefits as LATAM withdraws from the alliance, please refer to the FAQs below.

  • Simon says:

Will I be able to use virgin miles to book latam flights once the latam/delta tie up happens?

  • The Original David says:

Have you considered updating your image library? LAN and TAM became LATAM in 2015, and that oneworld tail compilation is out of date for CX and also I think MH…

    • Rob says:

The tail fin one is actually fairly recent – oneworld may be a bit behind!

  • BJ says:

If MAS goes the same way it will look like some bug holes are starting to appear in OW. Going forward the Alliance of Losers might start looking more like a winner, except in the UK we have very limited opportunity to play that game given the difficulty of earning miles.

  • SC says:

I have a few flights with Latam booked last month and travelling in May 2020. I entered my BA Executive Card number in order to receive Tier and Avios Points at the time of the booking. Will I still receive these points?

    • Lucy says:

My understanding is that you won’t – it’s about when you fly, rather than when you booked. If you find differently then please do let us know – I’m sure there are a lot of flyers who would be pleased to hear this!

    • Rob says:

Depends if BA retains an agreement with LATAM. Tier points are highly unlikely, Avios may be ok.

    • Charlieface says:

I’d think you would have legitimate complaint if they pulled the rug out from you.

  • M Corrêa says:

Latam sent an email saying they will keep the benefits with most of one world members, including earning and redeeming points and access to lounges. Not so bad in the end.

    • AJA says:

Did the email you received specify which OW carriers and did it confirm that this would be after 30 April?

      • Trent says:

Another blog reported the e-mail from LATAM said it would keep the relationships with a list of airlines, which comprised of every existing oneworld member apart from American Airlines!

  • LewisB says:

Beware – I’ve got 7 LATAM flights booked in September / October and every week or so at least one of them gets cancelled or I get moved to another flight. Usually it’s not even cancelled but LATAM have taken away the avios availability. The nice lady at the BA helpline rebooked me anyway when there was no availability.

    • Jill (Kinkell) says:

I’ve got 3 flights booked, internal within Peru and Ecuador. for late Oct and Nov. Econ+, but all showing my OW 2×23 kg luggage. I do hope that will be honoured as we are away for over a month.
Oh, and we’ve had a flight time change !

      • LewisB says:

My internal Peru flights have changed the most. Lima to Cusco. Cusco to Iquitos and Iquitos to Lima. LATAM cancelled my Cusco to Iquitos leg which forced a connecting flight via Lima. Then those got cancelled so BA honoured the original even though there was no avios availability. I’m off for a month so I do hope the baggage allowance will be honoured.

        • Lady London says:

Check every confirmation after any flight change and carry a printout or other means
of proof (luggage allowances). IME this is just the sort of thing you can have trouble getting honoured on the day when airline’s own situation changes. (I got royally st*ffed when BD got taken over by LH, LH farmed out every non MUC non FRA route to a regional airline and no one took any responsibility for sorting out my ticket which lost me chunks if what I had specifically booked the ticket to insure.)

Remember EU261 covers you on flight sequences on same ticket outward from the EU and UK. And covers you on any EU airline on the return legs to the EU and UK.

This means you are entitled to insist on being rebooked (called rerouted -but likely to be on same route to destination. You do not have to take a refund. You can insist they get you there by replacing your booking with one, that has only reasonable delay. Also any rebooks may just possibly turn out to be in an earning class. If so SUAE (Shut Up And Enjoy). Prob not tier points but earnings you could take a punt claiming anywhere except ‘at home’.

Watch your tickets proactively at intervals and very near the time. Key times are approaching late April and October when schedules change. Don’t wait to be informed as you may not be. As soon as you see a change that messes your itinerary get on to the issuing airline and get it sorted.

IIRC LATAM is already known for schedule changes. Look after yourself if you have an existing booking because there’s a good chance the airlines won’t.

I’ve got two business class flights booked with Latam; Santiago to Lima and Lima to LA. Both in April. Phew! I’m sad about LATAM leaving one world as we use it every year during our trips to South America. It will be interesting to see what alliances will be built after that.

  • JamesR says:

I am planning on a Latam redemption.. I saw this and thought ‘oh dear’.. But appears I can still book the reward seats for September. Wonder if this is because arrangements will remain with BA after Oneworld departure
