Norwegian decides against launching flights from Heathrow Airport

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Late last year Norwegian put its hat in the ring for the Heathrow slot lottery and was awarded a handful of summer 2020 slots.

These takeoff and landing slots would have enabled it to launch three weekly flights from Heathrow Airport.

Norwegian 787

Getting into Heathrow is, on paper, a key ambition for most carriers.  However, in reality, it would not have made much sense.  There would have been no connection opportunities and the cost involved in setting up a separate Heathrow operation probably isn’t worth it for three weekly flights.

Norwegian seems to agree, because after “careful consideration” they have decided to return the slots to the airport.  Given their attempts to control spending and “move from growth to profitability” this was most likely the right decision.

Any advice for good points redemptions/opportunities in Tokyo and Hong Kong? Or alternatively, reasonably priced decent location hotels for cash? Five star hotels look very expensive in November, especially in Tokyo.

    • BJ says:

Crowne Plaza Kyoto and Osaka at 30K. Hilton Tokyo if around 50-60K. Domestic flights on JAL and flights from Haheda to Gimpo if you fancy an overnight in Seoul.

      • Harry T says:

        @BJ
Thanks, as always. We have five or six days, so was looking at spending most of it in Tokyo (open to advice). Hilton award availability looks terrible, unfortunately.

        • BJ says:

Hmmm, most I have spent in Tokyo is four days which I feel is enough given other placesk to see.

          • Alan says:

I did a bit of a lightning tour but loved it – long weekend in Tokyo, then 3 nights in Kyoto with day trip to Hiroshima then back to Tokyo. Could easily have spent more time in each but also felt I got good value out my rail pass and got to see a nice variety of places.

          • Harry T says:

@BJ I’ve checked and I have five days for Japan. Would you recommend something like three days in Tokyo and two days in Kyoto? it’s my very first time in Japan.

      • Alan says:

Excellent treatment as Spire at CP Kyoto last autumn for me – upgrade, Exec Lounge access, etc. No breakfast and restaurant pricey but 7/11 just round the corner (their ATMs are also the only ones I found with no fees for withdrawing cash).

Conrad Tokyo was a lot of points but lovely suite upgrade as Diamond and excellent breakfast.

        • Harry T says:

Thanks, @Alan. I was considering the Conrad but looks like it’s 200000 points night! I am Platinum Ambassador, so may look at ICs. The one in Hong Kong looks great.

I did stay last Nov at the NEST Hanzomon. It’s a nice area (many offices) – not very touristy. It was affordable, rooms were new, right size if you book a double room. They don’t have breakfast but offer free bread and coffee/tea. Theres a Family Mart 10 sec away.

It always piques my interest Rob when you discuss topics that cross into my area of expertise (digital marketing) 🙂

Congrats on reaching 400,000 comments but I wouldn’t be too critical of the competitor supposedly receiving a lot of visits from India.

Firstly, this is from a third party tool that’s not privy to a site’s actual analytics and in my experience they are often woefully inaccurate. Second, don’t confuse page views with visits – the two are entirely different metrics (a single visitor can view multiple pages). Thirdly, it’s a very big assumption to make that they are buying page views (again different from visits, which is the metric you show) just because a third party tool seems to suggest they have a lot of visits from India. Finally, if you’re familiar with the digital marketing world, you’ll understand that no site can escape having a percentage of their visits coming from India. In fact you may be surprised to hear how many large websites have India as one of their largest traffic sources. There are a number of reasons for this a) the primary language in India is English and many websites don’t have international targeting set correctly on their websites, so they often appear in Google India searches b) there are a number of digital marketing services/companies based out of India that are constantly crawling/scraping/monitoring website content, which can register as a visit c) the online population in India is massive and hence if your site is visible in India (which most are) then you will get traffic from India, whether you want it or not.

I hope this comment is not too patronising and you, your team and perhaps some readers find it useful, as an explanation 😉

    • Aston100 says:

      >>>a) the primary language in India is English<<<
      Is this actually true though?

      • Shoestring says:

not in most senses, that would be Hindi – see table on 2011 census here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_India

      • Adam says:

Sorry, what I meant to say is that English is *one of the primary languages when using Google* in India.

As an example, the search query [cricket world cup 2019] had almost 150 million searches in Google India last year over the months of May, June and July. Whereas the Hindi version of that search query had just over 1.5 million searches over the same period.

I almost bought a football shirt from an allegedly U.K based retailer . After a bit of investigation, it turned put they were selling counterfeit shirts and based in China . The only positive “customer” reviews came from Indian based reviewers so i for one would see a red flag if i saw internet traffic from India

OT – 12 bottles of wine for £50 plus 2 Dartington crystal tumblers (I’m amassing a nice set of these) at bawineflyer.co.uk/bafeb. 3 cases to chose from, just don’t forget to cancel if you don’t want further deliveries.

    • Mike says:

Do you get any Avios with that?

      • Shoestring says:

it seems not – but it’s a great price

could be a few extra Avios if your navigation skills come good

the comment about india is also incredibly racist – 2nd time in a matter of weeks.

    • Charlieface says:

No, the page views will be automated, it’s just where the particular views (supposedly) bought were generated and that depends on where they can get IP addresses.

    • Aston100 says:

      Not racist, but tactless.
This is a trait I have noted within some articles and comments from the site owner.

      • Rhys says:

Even Wikipedia notes that clickfarms exist in many developing nations including India. Not sure what is racist or tactless about that.

      • BrianW says:

Lebron 23 and Aston100, you both need to take a good look in the mirror, give yourself a reality shake and get to grips with the reality that is………factual statement.

There is absolutely no racism, nor tactlessness in the these statements at all, they are matter of fact. It’s people like you, those always on the look out for any opportunity to cry racism, that are clouding actual racist behaviour in this world.

        Embarrassing posts, both of you.

Ché ?? Are you not aware of which types of internet industry tend to be found where?

And just to annoy you, I’ll repeat my statement, based on personal experience, that British Airways’s Indian call centre is cr*p. That’s because it’s
      – a British Airways call centre, and
      – based in India, and
      – cr*p

had a bit of luck – not quite as good as £700 of handbags for £200, mind you @Anna – but I ordered (separately) 3x the 3-month Now TV Sky Sports passes (they were ‘half price’ viz £49 @PCW)

they only went and sent me 2x Now TV sticks plus 1x set of bluetooth headphones…

    …which retails at £140 🙂

How’s that lucky, you have several kids!

Hardly surprising given the lack of proper forums and the search tools they would provide.
