The amazing hotel points deal at W Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix is back!

If you follow the hotel ‘scene’, or indeed Formula 1, you may know that there is a hotel built across the Formula 1 track in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island.

It looks like this:

Yas Island hotel

The hotel was operated by Viceroy but recently taken over by Marriott.  Following a spell as the Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi it is now operating, following refurbishment, as the W Abu Dhabi.

The website is here if you want to find out more.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place every November.  In 2020 it is over the weekend of 27th to 29th November, with the 29th being the main race.

Amazingly, despite rooms at the W over the Grand Prix weekend selling for crazy prices – since the track runs through the hotel – reward availability has opened up.

You need to book a 5-night minimum stay over the Grand Prix weekend, from Wednesday 25th November to Monday 30th November.  The race is Sunday.

Here is the cash rate for the cheapest non-refundable room.  These are for rooms on the side overlooking the marina, not the track.

W Abu Dhabi Grand Prix deal

To save you getting your calculator out, Dhs 22,600 is £4,781.  Bargain.

However, this is what you get if you book with Marriott Bonvoy points.  This is also non-refundable, as this is a special event period.  Remember that Bonvoy offers ‘5 nights for the points of 4’:

W Abu Dhabi Grand Prix deal

The 5-night package costs you just 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, which I value, at my standard 0.5p per point, at £600.

(Whichever option you book, there is an additional fee of Dhs 350 per night over the four nights of the event to cover your track pass, which includes all of the music events in the evenings.)

Quite a saving, to put it mildly.  Now, flights are not going to be a bargain although with all the options into Dubai and Abu Dhabi (a taxi from Dubai to the hotel will only be around £40 and will take an hour) it probably won’t be as bad as you think.t there is currently a 50% discount available when you buy Marriott Bonvoy points.  Here is the ‘buy points

Remember tha‘ page.  120,000 points, which gets you the five night booking here worth £4,781, will cost just $1,000 (£777).  You would need to do two transactions of 60,000 points each as the cap per purchase is 75,000 points.

You should do some research into exactly what viewpoint the hotel can offer you of the circuit as your room will be on the marina side, although in the past readers with status have been upgraded.

Take a look at this, which is the view that a HFP reader had from his room when he redeemed for this deal in 2018.  The W Abu Dhabi website is here.

My comment in the other thread is probably better here

No refundable, non changeable and non transferable plus 350 AED per person per night (26th 27th 28th 29th)

Probably still a bargain but all thinks to be factored in. Wish I could be sure right now or would have booked.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Plus rack rate in full if you can’t make it for whatever reason not just losing points.

      • The Savage Squirrel says:

        Ouch. That’s brutal!

      • lebron 23 says:

best thing to do here is simply give a credit card number that you intend to close…

        noones gonna pursue you.

lowers the risk, imagine you cant go for any reason, ouch…

        • Brighton Belle says:

. . . And you don’t mind your credit score taking a big hit for an unpaid debt?

        • Almost as comical as the accusation that Rob’s comments about India the other week were racist.

Lowers the risk 😂 Have a word with you common sense switch lebron 23.

  2. Availability has gone. Don’t really mind because I’m seeing the Melbourne grand prix already thanks to Head for Points publicising the Qantas golden tickets! Thanks again.

Speaking of which, can I buy @Rhys a beer in Sydney?

    • It hadn’t gone – the website glitched on me. Booked for the dates above. I have 24 hours to think about it – can cancel for free in that period.

      • HarryT – did you keep your booking? Im looking to see who is going solo to this event (im going sans-wife), looking at options of sharing some of the Auctions that will come up in future etc (eg 2 tickets on Hilton/Marriot points etc)…

  3. I remember this deal mentioned before, one for the future. I managed (with the use of Avios for flights) to do 6 nights near Nice, flights to and from Belfast including club from Nice to LCY with tickets for Thursday, Saturday and Sunday of the Monaco GP this May for close to £1000 all in for two people.

  4. I imagine most people in that readers room would be watching their TV, not looking out the window. Wouldn’t staying in the room defeat the whole poiht?

    • Shoestring says:

yep I’m not a motorhead but went to a few GPs when I got free tickets – all the fun is the live action & noise, obvs washed down with plenty of lubricant 🙂

  5. I did F1 last year

it was 4 days minimum stay but we booked 5 night due 5 night free,
and had to pay also for 3days f1pass
    350AED per person per day
but I watched live secret Robby Williams gig on mariina which was paid by some Danish $$$$ guys just after race finished…amazing value
this I booked with friend ho have Palt status and was upgraded but race track view was poor but whey had also special viewing balcony on satellite building for hotel guest and also You can go around track footpath va marina wirh pass, I want do it again but don’t have enough points
and womens in hotel during F1….amazing…mostly russians….I think at work or looking for husband…..

    • one thing happens which was lucky for my others 2 friends…they didn’t have enough points to book also stay but one day when I was trying to book hotel at Abu Dhabi for saturday f1 night I tried just 1 day booking on marriott and seriously I manage to book Yas Hotel for them only for 1 day stay Saturday night so they got passes and rest of weekend they just spend in our room it was easy because we have flights back to LHR at 2am monday…flights we booked before rooms was available on marriott …
advice Use all weekend its amazing place so many gigs at marrina and friendly people …
120k marriott points for it its peanuts..

    • Hi,

Could you clarify what the 350 AED per night actually gets you? I know that it is a fee if you stay there during the F1 weekend but is it worth it? I am not looking to watch the race from my room because it might be a sea view but wanted to see what the passes actually get you? Do they get you access to the track/grandstands/paddock? Also, do you get access to the concerts after with the pass?

Thanks in advance for any information

      • x2. It doesn’t say on the Marriott website what it includes.

        • From my experience the 350 is what the hotel pay to the F1 organisers. You get the concerts and the opportunity to view from the hotel. On the Thursday you can also take part in a pit walk and viewing from the grand stands. The other days you get nothing in the way of viewing at the track and instead you watch from the hotel. Last year it was a bit disorganised on the Friday, but qualifying and the race itself were from a great vantage point at the hotel. Best to email the hotel direct though – they are very responsive

      • I went last year using my Marriott 1-4 travel package. The fee gets you access to all public areas of the hotel/ track, but does NOT get you grandstand/ paddock etc. It does get you access to the marina to have a wonder round. The only place to watch the race is the viewing area as mentioned above. You do get the wrist bands for the concerts.
If you want guaranteed track views you need to pay for normal grandstand tickets or pay a high price for the 3rd party areas on the hotel. Some balcones get you amazing track views but you can’t guarantee this as thee is the mesh covering the whole hotel.
Last year we had great views by using marriott moments mercedes yacht tickets for qualifying day. Great value if you can do this.
It really was a great weekend, in the middle of the buzzing atmosphere but you can hear the party music from the yachts until 4+ am!!

        • Yes what a cracking weekend it was! Lee is still smiling from the dance yacht next to us!! 😂. If Marriott do the yacht again on their moments site then don’t hesitate to buy a package. Unlimited canapés and drinks all day on the yacht with perfect view of the corner that goes under the hotel!

Yes the music goes on til the early hours but it’s an experience I will never forget.

How’s things up North Mr BLT? 👍

          • All good Matthew! Hope all is good with you and you have planned Lee’s next holiday for him!

It was a very surreal weekend of eating and drinking on Yachts and people watching. I would definitely rate it as the best points redemption I’ve ever made.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned, but from March this hotel is moving to a cat 5 and so will require more points. Unfortunately, can’t make it this year either, but will definitely aim

Harry T, I wouldn’t book anything re: seating until closer to the time. Marriott moments may have therir packages and Hilton did some packages with Mclaren (ask Matthew). The grandstand seating can be quite expensive on its own, think we were quoted £600 for Sunday only once we were there.

          • Funny you should mention that! We have booked to going skiing in Japan in Jan 2021. Staying at the Westin Rusutsu. We have looked after the girls too with a posh weekend in Dubai flying Emirates biz class in Nov 👍

I am literally out of points now though 😬 …

          • @BLT great point about the category change – will likely take it from 120,000 to 160,000 Bonvoy. I should probably buy the 75k I need to lock in the rate.

I will keep a beady eye on the Hilton and Marriott sites for packages too.

      • You get a dedicated hotel pass that you need to get in/out of the hotel and every entry/exit has security checkpoints. Also access to marina, which is fab, an experience on race weekend. Also access to Abu Dhabi Hill I believe and race concerts. We also got lots of gifts in the room pretty much every night. Star spotting was very easy and you can use the taxi boats to get around. Sadly can’t make it this year hence why highlighting the deal for others 👍

        • @matthew
Thanks for the info. Are there places to view the grand prix from within the hotel, if you don’t get a room with a view? Can you get into any viewing areas outside the hotel? Trying to decide if I would need to buy more tickets on top of the pass provided by the hotel.

I have booked for those five nights – waiting on the gf to decide if she fancies it.

          • In theory you could view from the bridge over track in the hotel. I think you could find places without too much trouble but the easiest plan would be about 4 weeks before the race to bag be some Marriott moments buy it now packages. These include premium position grandstand seats. I paid 40,000 points for the Sat (pair of grandstand seats and yacht access) and 70,000 for the Sun. Amazing experience. I also picked up a pair of paddock passes with Hilton for the Fri which again was an astonishing day. That cost about 240,000 Hilton points. It was a party atmosphere all weekend at the hotel which was fab but also a little noisy in the early hours. But you can’t have it all…

I found Etihad seats with my AA miles pretty easy to find this far out.

          • Sounds like I will need to find a stash of Bonvoy and Hilton points! Hard to generate them these days without Amex churning. May be worth buying to redeem on packages.

I was thinking of just getting direct flight with Emirates from Newcastle to Dubai for cash. Economy is reasonably priced and I don’t mind it for day flights of that distance.

      • Mr Pawel Siewko says:

You must pay this fee to stay at hotel it get You access to concerts track day at Thursday and you can take marina walk

  6. Looks like availability has gone now in any case 🙁

    • Shoestring says:

      • – this is a great find – i just booked a package too (only twin rooms left @120k points)…

  7. Is it just room only when using points? What’s the best/cheapest way to add some perks? using a specific credit card etc to get better status etc?

  8. O/T – not sure if anyone has seen the info but Turkey have decided to waive visa fees for all UK nationals from March 2020. Also for citizens of Austria, Poland, Belgium, Netherlands and Spain. Good news!

  9. As this seems sold out, any other spectacular redemptions for formula 1 across the globe and when to book? I want to start planning for next year.

  10. So I’ve booked 5 nights and it came to 120,000 pts plus 2100 AED. Is that the 350 AED per night per person during my stay or is this taxes?

    • That’s the mandatory F1 hotel access fee per person per night on the designated days.

  11. Is this no longer available? It shows availability when searching but then viewing but then selecting the room says no availability?

    • try doing 4 night – you miss the free night but you maybe able to book (that what happened with me)

      • I think its been bonvoyed. It now goes between showing availability, to only twin, to no availability, to the search not working and then back again. Called the reservation line and the agent said he had to call his helpdesk as it was showing as available but not available when booking, so wasnt able to do that either. Same thing happens with 4 days, seems to have either gone or their IT is dismal.
