The amazing hotel points deal at W Abu Dhabi for the Grand Prix is back!

If you follow the hotel ‘scene’, or indeed Formula 1, you may know that there is a hotel built across the Formula 1 track in Abu Dhabi on Yas Island.

It looks like this:

Yas Island hotel

The hotel was operated by Viceroy but recently taken over by Marriott.  Following a spell as the Yas Hotel Abu Dhabi it is now operating, following refurbishment, as the W Abu Dhabi.

The website is here if you want to find out more.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix takes place every November.  In 2020 it is over the weekend of 27th to 29th November, with the 29th being the main race.

Amazingly, despite rooms at the W over the Grand Prix weekend selling for crazy prices – since the track runs through the hotel – reward availability has opened up.

You need to book a 5-night minimum stay over the Grand Prix weekend, from Wednesday 25th November to Monday 30th November.  The race is Sunday.

Here is the cash rate for the cheapest non-refundable room.  These are for rooms on the side overlooking the marina, not the track.

To save you getting your calculator out, Dhs 22,600 is £4,781.  Bargain.

However, this is what you get if you book with Marriott Bonvoy points.  This is also non-refundable, as this is a special event period.  Remember that Bonvoy offers ‘5 nights for the points of 4’:

W Abu Dhabi Grand Prix deal

The 5-night package costs you just 120,000 Marriott Bonvoy points, which I value, at my standard 0.5p per point, at £600.

(Whichever option you book, there is an additional fee of Dhs 350 per night over the four nights of the event to cover your track pass, which includes all of the music events in the evenings.)

Quite a saving, to put it mildly.  Now, flights are not going to be a bargain although with all the options into Dubai and Abu Dhabi (a taxi from Dubai to the hotel will only be around £40 and will take an hour) it probably won’t be as bad as you think.t there is currently a 50% discount available when you buy Marriott Bonvoy points.  Here is the ‘buy points

Remember tha‘ page.  120,000 points, which gets you the five night booking here worth £4,781, will cost just $1,000 (£777).  You would need to do two transactions of 60,000 points each as the cap per purchase is 75,000 points.

You should do some research into exactly what viewpoint the hotel can offer you of the circuit as your room will be on the marina side, although in the past readers with status have been upgraded.

Take a look at this, which is the view that a HFP reader had from his room when he redeemed for this deal in 2018.  The W Abu Dhabi website is here.

As this seems sold out, any other spectacular redemptions for formula 1 across the globe and when to book? I want to start planning for next year.

  • Zed says:

So I’ve booked 5 nights and it came to 120,000 pts plus 2100 AED. Is that the 350 AED per night per person during my stay or is this taxes?

    • Matthew says:

That’s the mandatory F1 hotel access fee per person per night on the designated days.

  • r* says:

Is this no longer available? It shows availability when searching but then viewing but then selecting the room says no availability?

    • babyg says:

try doing 4 night – you miss the free night but you maybe able to book (that what happened with me)

I think its been bonvoyed. It now goes between showing availability, to only twin, to no availability, to the search not working and then back again. Called the reservation line and the agent said he had to call his helpdesk as it was showing as available but not available when booking, so wasnt able to do that either. Same thing happens with 4 days, seems to have either gone or their IT is dismal.
