Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HfP chat thread launches – Sunday 22nd March

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Starting today, we have decided to run a daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We have sent this initial article to our email subscribers so they are aware of what is going on.   From tomorrow, email subscribers will not receive a link to the daily chat thread.  If you visit the site, however, a new chat thread will be opened each morning.  Regular articles will continue to be emailed.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

  • Anuj says:

Can you not use a comments add-on that allows better tracking of replies ? I often forget where I commented so can’t check for replies to my questions

    • The Original David says:

Having everyone furiously clicking back through every single page of every single article drives up the page views, and therefore the ad revenue, innit.

      • Shoestring says:

        heh heh! surely not

I’m going to enjoy this Chat page the next 20 weeks or so out in the sun (I did it)

        • Shoestring says:

no need for much social interaction, I’ll get grocery deliveries, maybe a bit of bread & beer this week from the village shop before the deliveries kick in, there’s not much Covid-19 in this ‘island’ so should be OK provided nobody gave it to me on the 75% empty plane last night.

57, serious pneumonia requiring hospitalization and the old IVs 2 yrs ago, (high risk?), seems like 60+ is the cutoff point so no need to make the hospital bods decide for you, just self-isolate

          • BJ says:

Watch out for the mafia and take care crossing the road Harry…enjoy!

          • ChrisBCN says:

And his comment on there being a cut-off at 60+ shows that he is still absolutely clueless about the whole thing as he has been through out, with all the dangerous ‘advice’ he has given on the topic.

I really wish he has stuck to talking about the rules based schemes which he does understand, and not this topic.

          • Shoestring says:

            cheers @BJ

        • Secret Squirrel says:

Congrats SS, I know where I would rather be!

      • Rob says:

Only if the ads are clicked!

  • Martyn Ford says:

This is a terrific initiative, thank you. Let`s all stay positive, be kind and constructive, get through this together and look forward to wonderful travel in a few month`s time.

  • Ian says:

LHR-BOM Flight originally booked using Avios & BA AmEx 241. Outbound cancelled by BA but return not cancelled yet. Do I need to ring BA for refund or will points, voucher and money be automatically refunded?

    • Keith says:

      Yes Ian…

    • Tariq says:

Same situation with flights to BNA, I rang last night and refund agreed immediately. Points not credited back into account yet but will keep watching.

  • Keith says:

You should reenable the ability to receive an email when someone replies to your query

  • Keith says:

Add potential the ability to create a user on the website. You could surely give flyertalk a run for their money… in an organised way

  • N says:

Success/failure for these sorts of ideas tends to be v v delicate. God luck and I hope this works out – this could lift/improve the site many many times over

    • Shoestring says:

OK I didn’t actualy get any sleep until my wife’s flight departed, (she got me in), grabbed a few wee beers etc whilst waiting, no apologies needed as I just replied to Yawn posts but might get some Zzzs

      • Shoestring says:

so apologies if dead tired, stressed & drunk

      • Harry T says:

        You okay, Harry?

      • ChrisBCN says:

No, he needs to be banned

      • Shoestring says:

yep all good with some sleep 🙂

wife & daughter on their way back down to Cornwall in the car – had to bring my 15YO daughter in case of issues arising and getting stuck, she demanded to be ̶b̶r̶i̶b̶e̶d̶ paid for her time so in addition to the pointless airfares that cost me another £240 though tbf there was a Brandy Melville top included

my wife would not have come to enable it without our daughter in case she got stuck on her own with my younger son in UK for a few weeks (closed borders)

    • Shoestring says:

pretty happy right now – 20 weeks out in our place in the sun, nope I’m joyous

      • Shoestring says:

Indeed – as long as I last 14 days, I should be OK my old friend lol

      • Alan says:

I suspect it might be longer than that! Hope you’re not forced to come back on 31st Dec if the previous big media story rears its head again!

        • Shoestring says:

I’m going for PR option (on paper) since I’m going to be here 20 weeks

    • Shoestring says:

got that one wrong, N, oops & sorry 🙂

I needed a couple of hours sleep

  • Vicky says:

BA are still trying to charge £35 pp to cancel my flights to Japan. How can they still be showing the flights as going when the Japanese Gov has revoked visas for visitors from the UK?

    • Catalan says:

Because Japanese nationals and passport holders are still flying BA operated flights to Japan.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Because Japanese citizens are also able to buy tickets….

    • Genghis says:

Per conditions of carriage, BA aren’t responsible.

      • Rich says:

Airlines are responsible for checking paperwork of all passengers they carry. If you have not got the correct visa / 14 day quarantine arrangement certificate / other paperwork, you WILL be turned back at the destination border to be repatriated AT THE AIRLINE’S EXPENSE. That is why every time you fly hand baggage only to the USA, you are asked to attend a BA desk for a document check.

        • Genghis says:

“ 13a3) We will not be liable to you if:
you do not have all necessary passports, visas, health certificates and other travel documents”
          https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/legal/british-airways/general-conditions-of-carriage

        • Genghis says:

And no direct experience of what happens in reality but CoC note that the repatriation costs are passed onto the passenger
“ If you are refused entry to a country, you must pay:

any fine, penalty or charge imposed on us by the government concerned
any detention costs we are charged
the fare for transporting you back to your place of departure and
any other costs we reasonably pay or agree to pay.
We will not refund to you the fare for carrying you to the place where you were denied entry.”

Anyone with actual understanding? Yes, the airlines may be fined but would pass this on (if likely the person has some dosh)?

    • Michael C says:

Vicky, is your flight for Japan some way ahead? Mine for Friday has indeed been officially cancelled.

      • Vicky says:

It’s not for a couple of weeks so I’m leaving it until nearer the time.

    • Rich says:

….and that is why BA allegedly have 9 billion Euros of liquidity currently! How much will Walsh extract as his golden handshake???

  • Patrycja says:

Could you do an article on Latam and their policies at the moment? It would really help decide what to do with upcoming flights?
