Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The new HfP chat thread launches – Sunday 22nd March

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Starting today, we have decided to run a daily chat thread on Head for Points.

Historically, the daily ‘Bits’ articles were the defacto repository for random comments and questions.  It is unlikely that the news flow will be so big over the next few weeks that we will need many ‘Bits’ articles, however.

The comments under this article are where you should post questions about travel and, indeed, anything else on your mind.  At this tricky time, and given that many of you are stuck at home self-isolating, we want the HfP community to have a place to chat.

Please only comment under the main articles on the site if your comment is directly related to the topic of the article.  This has long-term benefits as its keeps the commentary relevant for people who read those articles in the future.

We will review how this works after a few days:

we could potentially split it into a daily travel and non-travel chat thread

we may install some basic forum software

we may start suggesting potential topics for daily discussion

Let’s see how it goes.

We have sent this initial article to our email subscribers so they are aware of what is going on.   From tomorrow, email subscribers will not receive a link to the daily chat thread.  If you visit the site, however, a new chat thread will be opened each morning.  Regular articles will continue to be emailed.

We will do a separate article in a day or so about how we plan to run the site over the next few weeks.  Take care!

  • Freddy says:

Has he come down with a fever or summat

    • Shoestring says:

      It’s an imposter 🙂

      I was asleep

      • Shoestring says:

        No I wasn’t, I was in the Garden. You’re the imposter 🙂

      • Mike says:

The asleep Harry I believe…….Harry thanks for all your valuable input it really makes a difference. I would love to see HFP make you a guest editor for a day…. Harry the voice of reason – cutting through fake news and media hype.

      • Shoestring says:

cheers @Mike, looks like I’m good to go on a couple of hours’ sleep, I sent my son to bed at 3am (2am UK), we got in 2am, then I stayed up to check my wife woke up in time to get her early flight 🙂

  • Marcw says:

No one will read this chat thread. If there are no comments relevant to the “article”, it will just be ignored. Good luck!

  • Antony D'Emanuele says:

I really do not understand why BA are doing this, puts unnecessary pressure on call centres. I had a cash flight cancelled and had to use the hack to get a cash refund, I was only offered a voucher…

    • Polly says:

They are doing it to conserve cash, and people will just give up trying to get an answer, accept the voucher and be done with it.
Only the people in the know on hfp can know about the workaround. BA must be furious that’s out there.

      • Simon says:

I wonder how long the workaround will work for. The official line from the BA Twitter account is being redirected to the voucher page is a bug.

        • AJA says:

BA is never going to admit it’s a deliberate tactic to preserve cash. If they did the EC would slap a massive fine on them.

The reality is that all airlines and cruise companies are doing the same thing. It’s exposed how they operate using our cash for flights in the future to pay bills today. BA may be highly profitable but it needs constant cash flowing in to keep operating. I wonder how long their £9 billion in cash and credit lines will last.

        • Sundar says:

It may be a bug for them a nice-to-have in this instance.
But fundamentally, not coding properly for JS-Off on webpages is also not acceptable – In this case, this benefits the customer 🙂

and Thanks Rob/HfP team for creating the “Bits” chat thread – I would suggest Post-marking the thread at the top or providing a link at the top(if that doesnt require a re-design).

        • Lady London says:

You mean the bug that British Airways has specifically added by writing extra JavaScript to their website, that blocks customer access to the refund request form? That bug?

I hope they are not protected by the British government, and that British Airways gets sold off and loses all their slots.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

In the case of gift vouchers, around 20% go unredeemed.

But 100% of cash refunds are redeemed – instantly!

  • JUH says:

Need to cancel various reservations with Hilton and IHG hotels with a check-in date before 30/4.

Do I do this using the hotel websites or do I need to call them up to ensure I won’t be charged? The rates I booked are non-cancellable and they are still listed as such when I log into my bookings.

    • Grant says:

I had similar situation with a Hilton booking where I had also paid a deposit. I emailed the hotel directly and they sorted it for me.

    • Harry T says:

I think in general it’s always best to email a hotel directly for any issues. A Sofitel refunded me a non refundable rate this week and also completed the cancellation for me.

    • Craig says:

Had a good result cancelling Hilton through Twitter, took about 2 hours with delayed responses.

  • Bill says:

    Stick to now tv

  • Adam says:

Anyone any ideas about Aer Lingis avios reward bookings, due to fly next week, rang yesterday they said would be £35 fee. I’m holding off in hope route cancelled…. It’s still flying (DUB-VIENNA)

  • Chris says:

Is this the new HFP chat thread.
If not, is there a link to get to it?

    • Shoestring says:

looks like this is it for today

      • Roger says:

What’s difference. You still have to use search to look at any specific post.
        No easy way to navigate.
I hope there will be a proper chat thread than this!
