Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Which good miles and points deals are ending today?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

We have temporarily suspended our fortnightly ‘deals ending soon’ feature.  The majority of the deals were flight and hotel related and there isn’t much of that going on at the moment.

We are keeping the list going in the background, and we’ll continue to let you know if you’re about to miss a deal which may be worth jumping on.

Here are the deals ending today (31st March) which are still of interest:

Get 6,000 Avios with Tesco Pet Insurance

You will earn 2,500 Clubcard points, which converts into 6,000 Avios or 6,250 Virgin Flying Club miles, when you take out a policy.

A lot of readers have succesfully applied since it launched in January, with the Clubcard points arriving on schedule after 35 days.  Once you have the points, you can cancel the policy.

Full details are on the Tesco Bank website here.  The offer is open to all Clubcard holders and does not say it is targeted.  Note that the cheapest ‘Accident & Injury’ policies do not count.

Special bonus on the IHG Rewards Club Mastercard credit card

Get 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points with the FREE IHG credit card

IHG Rewards Club has doubled the sign-up bonus on its free credit card to 20,000 IHG Rewards Club points.  I would value these at £80+ so its not a bad offer.  You also get Gold Elite status in IHG Rewards Club.

Importantly, the spend target is only £500 in three months which is possible even during these lockdown days.

Our full article on the doubled IHG Rewards Club credit card bonus is here.

Get bonus Avios on an Avis car rental

Avis is currently offering 700 bonus Avios if you book a rental via the Aer Lingus site.  You need to give an Aer Lingus AerClub account number, but when the Avios arrive you can move them into British Airways Executive Club via ‘Combine My Avios’.

You must book today for rentals up to 31st May.  This might be too early to be out and about, but the offer is there if you want to book a cancellable rate.

Details of the Avis and Aer Lingus Avios offer are in this article.

Convert Best Western, Choice and Hilton points to American Airlines

If you have any orphaned (ie too few to use for anything useful) Best Western, Choice or Hilton Honors points, today is the last day to convert them to American Airlines miles.

This only makes sense if you have an active American Airlines account of course!  One upside is that it will count as ‘activity’ and extend the expiry date of your American Airlines miles pot.

This HfP article has more on this and details of the remaining American Airlines hotel partners.  Note that AA has already removed the three chains from its hotel partners page.

Interestingly I opened the IHG Free card when this offer started. I got the 10,000 points the moment I just £200 but am yet to receive the additional 10,000 points when I spent the £500 – just the standard £1/1point …anyone else experience this and know when I should get the additional bonus points?

    • TGLoyalty says:

My additional 10k posted straight into my IHG account about 5 weeks after I spent the £500.

    • AG says:

I received them about a month after hitting the threshold. (you only see them on your IHG statement, not when you log into the creation card website to check your balance – at least this was the case for me).

  • Vit says:

Applied for IHG Rewards Club free credit card a few day ago – didn’t get accepted immidiately (even with “excellent credit score” from experian). Was told they need to check for some more info.

Anyone else experienced the same? If yes, how long till you get accepted?

    Cheers,
    Vit

    • makrxx says:

I’ve never gotten accepted for the IHG card despite having everything check out. Not sure what are they looking out for…

    • Bentoni says:

It happened to me when I applied for their black version of the card, it took a few weeks and I had to email them my IDs and bank statements. In the end I only got £1000 credit limit and they are not willing to increase my limit even though I managed to spent over £10k within 6 months.

Funnily enough, when I opened this white version of the card during this promotion period, I was accepted straightaway and offered a much bigger credit limit.

Does anyone know if I could merge the credit limits together?

      • Genghis says:

“Does anyone know if I could merge the credit limits together?”
No. I tried that when I cancelled my White last time. They were happy to increase my limit, however. Not too sure now given they decreased limits by 20% on most (all?) cards.

        • Doug M says:

Likewise. Cancelled the white and wanted credit limit moved to black, which had a much lower limit. They increased the black by about £2K from memory, but that was it.

    • Genghis says:

I applied for the White card when the offer came around (I hold the Black currently and have held the White in the past). Not accepted immediately but a couple of weeks later received the card in the post.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Creation are very hit or miss. Took out the White card & on application submitted for a companion secondary card for my wife, nothing ever arrived!

        • Doug M says:

Agreed. I applied for the white recently, already hold the black, and was refused. Only CC refusal I can remember in the last 30 years.

  • AJA says:

I transferred some Hilton points to my American Airlines account last week. They showed up 24hrs later and happily extend the pot from expiring for another 18 months. I have to find another way to earn AA miles for free, the Hilton transfer was very useful. I may have to credit a BA flight to AA at some point. They have had some decent bonus deals when you buy miles in the past. I also wish you could transfer between AA and BA. I also wish AA would do a credit card here in the UK.

    • Chabuddy geezy says:

Post on the award wallet blog to earn 5 points.

    • meta says:

You’re better off transferring Marriott Bonvoy in chunks of 60k to get 25k AA Miles. And there is a Marriott credit card.

    • Lady London says:

Good idea AJA. Sadly though partners in OneWorld or the Transatlantic Alliance, and BA and AA are in both, don’t eat each other’s lunch by allowing customers to transfer points between them!

2 useful sites : statusmatcher dot com (please contribute back on there if you ever get a match yourself) and whereto credit dot com.

    • Liz says:

Erewards via the AA site – if they still offer it.

    • AJA says:

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Unfortunately I am already signed up to e-rewards linked to BA and can’t sign up again. The Marriot credit card and the Award Wallet blog ideas are very good.:-)

  • where2travel says:

I wonder if the AA option for Best Western miles has effectively already gone. I get the following note in my account when I go to the “Spend Points” page:

“Due to the current impact of Covid-19 we are unfortunately unable to offer a large number of our redemption options temporarily, but don’t worry they will be back up and redeemable as soon as possible.

In the meantime you can still redeem your Rewards points for Best Western Travel Cards and Free Night Stays for future Best Western breaks and Shelter donations which will be greatly appreciated at this time.”

    • Rob says:

Hmmm …. I remember reading somewhere that Best Western had stopped a lot of ‘external’ redemptions to save cash. This could be part of it.

  • Rav says:

any good places to buy avios at the moment need 10,000 to redeem flight for 2 for 1 voucher

    • Lady London says:

Best to buy from BA. If you can take out a BAPP and do the spend in the time required you would get them free.

You can also often buy from Iberia (they can be moved between IB and BA although you might need to create a See Lingus account to transfer via) or from Iberia on regularly occurring Groupon offers. However many problems dealing with Iberia are reported when things go wrong so I would not recommend this.

      • Lady London says:

        See Lingus=Aer Lingus

PS if you have Tesco points you can Convert them to avoid at a multiplier if 2,4x

  • AndyGWP says:

Hmmm I’d best get my cat insured!

I selected “Standard Cover” (and not the “Accident and Injury” option) before getting the quote, but the quote it then gives me is titled “Accident & Injury, Also known as Accident only” cover :/

Not sure why it won’t let me choose a ‘short-term’ treatments cover (it’s greyed out). Any thoughts?

    • AndyGWP says:

It’s because I’m a doofus, and in the quote I selected “Accident only” instead of “Accidents and illnesses”

  • Simon yik says:

    Totally OT

Booked a return flight with Qantas via Expedia for London-Singapore next month and Expedia have just emailed saying that Qantas has issued a flight credit for cancelling the flight.

Am i entitled to a full cash refund instead of credit?
And am i right in assuming the refund should come from Expedia?

    Thanks guys, stay safe

    • Rob says:

I’ve heard of other people getting this line from Expedia. Expedia has had cash from Qantas and is now fobbing you off with a voucher whilst pocketing your cash. Nice. However, you may have agreed to this in their Terms & Conditions when you bought the ticket – I’d dig those out first.

    • mr_jetlag says:

Got the same from Expedia for a Sri Lankan flight.

To add insult to injury they will NOT take your call (menu has been updated and if your itinerary is >72h they hang up, if it’s within 72h they put you on wait for 1h then hang up! Genius!)

I made a note of each call and rang up Amex and got S75.

I can’t imagine vouchers are enforceable, the text of my email says:

“We have issued an airline credit for your flight
You are receiving this email as either your airline has cancelled your flight, or it was noted that you did not take your trip as scheduled because of the current situation related to COVID-19. No need to call us, we’ve got you covered. Your safety and peace of mind are of utmost importance to us, and we want to let you know we have issued an airline credit for your flight.”

  • EwanG says:

Just a reminder that today is also the last day for spend on the Amex spend £x get y bonus MRs, for spend during the month of March.
