Does buying points make sense?

Yes, at the right time in the right place.

Here is proof. I bought Hilton Honors points for our stay at Waldorf Astoria Dubai The Palm this week, image below.

The cash rate was £655 per night including tax and service – and we needed two rooms for five nights! Christmas and New Year on the beach doesn’t come cheap.

On points, it was 64,000 Hilton Honors points per night. The headline rate is 80,000 points per night but the average reduces due to the ‘five for four’ deal that elite members get. With the current 100% bonus, 64,000 points cost me $320 or £236 per night. I saved 64% on the cash price by buying points.

Over the five nights we were there, for two rooms, we spent £2,360 instead of £6,550 by purchasing points. We also got free breakfast due to our Hilton status (I have Diamond via stays, my wife has Gold via Amex Platinum) which saved another £80 per day and negotiated a 3pm check-out due to my Diamond status.

        You can extend SQ miles (once only) for 6 months for US$12 or 1,200 miles per 10k miles.

      Yes, sorry – didn’t mean to mislead on the expiry point – to clarify, I had a small balance of KrisFlyer miles already that would almost certainly have expired unused if I had not been able to top-up in this way. They do have a 36 month life.

    Apart from pay 4 stay 5, does Hilton provide different redemption points to gold members than other elite members? trying to look into availability at Waldorf Maldives, 120k point per night is rarely found, no conservative nights, or more ridiculous 499k/799k points per night. Thanks!

      I am Diamond, I can see 3 consecutive 120k nights at the beginning of Feb. That is the max for the whole of next year, not a hope of a pay 4 stay 5.

      The higher redemption costs reflect the dynamics nature of Hilton redemptions. They offer a certain number of rooms at the normal redemption rate and then offer you a points equivalent to the cash price when these rooms are booked out.

    Just looking at Conrad Maldives and the nightly rate of 95k for a Beach Villa suddenly jumps to a staggering 316k per night for an over water villa. This is called a “Premium Room Reward” I stayed for a week in WA Rome in a suite this summer and this phrase was never seen once . Is this the new normal for HH points. Good for a Double tree in Sheffield but tricky to get value in a HfP type location?

      Hilton only makes standard rooms available for redemption. All other room types, plus standard rooms once the reward quota has gone, are charged as ‘premium’. This is where Hilton pays the hotel cash for your room and takes your points off you at roughly 0.2p each.
