The Government’s hotel quarantine booking portal is now live

The Government has launched its hotel quarantine booking portal this afternoon.

Unsurprisingly, it isn’t functioning and the ability to book has been temporarily withdrawn ….

There is some interesting information on it – take a look.

As we know, the only people who can fly to England if they have been in a ‘red list’ country in the previous 10 days are:

  • a British national
  • an Irish national
  • anyone with residence rights in the UK

These people must:

  • quarantine for 10 days in a managed quarantine hotel
  • take a coronavirus test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8 of quarantining

This is what I didn’t know

The number of arrival airports is restricted. You can only fly into:

  • Heathrow Airport
  • Gatwick Airport
  • London City Airport
  • Birmingham Airport
  • Farnborough Airfield

It is amusing that Farnborough has been added for the benefit of private jet users, but there is nothing any nearer the Scottish border than Birmingham.

Your airline will be held responsible if they fly you to any other UK airport if you have been in a ‘red list’ country in the previous 10 days, even if you are flying from elsewhere.

The quarantine price is not fixed at £1,750 per person

There is a sliding scale for multiple adults and children:

  • £1,750 for 11 nights for one adult
  • £650 per additional adult or child over 12
  • £325 per child aged 5-12

The package includes the costs of transport from the port of arrival to the designated hotel, food, accommodation, security, other essential services and testing.

How does quarantine work?

It sounds like fun:

  • You are not allowed to upgrade your hotel room or to specify any sort of floor or view (the Government is only paying £30 per night to the hotels, plus £20 for meals, so don’t expect a suite!)
  • Connecting rooms for families will be ‘prioritised’ but not guaranteed
  • No visitors are allowed except for care or medical reasons
  • Food deliveries are allowed but hotels are not obliged to deliver them to your room immediately
  • You cannot leave your room for any purpose. A request to take exercise does not need to be met.

You can find out – but not yet book, because it isn’t working properly – on the Government website here.

    No

    • meta says:

Release is possible from home quarantine rather than hotel quarantine after a new test on day 5 under test and release scheme, but you still need to take a test on day 8.

  • Doc says:

Apart from Birmingham, no other northern airports (I assume Scotland will set its own rules for GLA and EDI arrivals.)
Also the list of people not needing to quarantine or indeed take a test before arrival is worrying with hauliers and government officials not needing to quarantine? Anyone remember our esteemed prime minister being admitted to hospital with COVID?
One rule for them or sod everyone else. Great idea but too many loopholes.

    • Aston100 says:

Birmingham is not in the North.
      Thanks.

      • Doc says:

        Never said it was😂
I meant nothing North of that. Manchester is a pretty big airport that Northerners like me like to use (not that I am going anywhere of course). But not sure if the government know anything exists north of Birmingham though 😀

        • Brian W says:

“Apart from Birmingham, no other northern airports” clearly implies you believe Birmingham is in the North. It’s there in black and white!

        • kitten says:

          North=North of the Watford Gap.

People in Brighton probably think anything North of London is North.

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

No arrivals in Scotland now – apart from North Sea oli flights to Aberdeen from Norway.

(And some Dublin ones on Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon – at the last count)

  • Tarmohamed says:

So how does the testing on day 2 and day 8 actually work? Do they post you the test that you have to post back, or do they provide it at the airport?

    • Tarmohamed says:

I’m referring to those who need quarantine at home.

    • Ian M says:

You have to go out to take the test, but you’re not allowed out, so you can’t take the test. Then you get fined for failing to comply with the rules 🙂

      • TGLoyalty says:

You can leave is it’s essential

Food if it can’t be delivered
Compassionate grounds like someone who is dying or funeral
        Medical emergency
        To take a test
        If you’re a government minister

  • Jimbob says:

Does this stack with Marriott’s double elite nights promotion and fast track my way to Platinum Elite?

10 days off work as well!

  • Callum says:

It’s interesting that if you test positive on day 2, you leave quarantine on day 12 with no further testing.

I know you’re very unlikely to still be contagious by then, but it seems like an easily mitigated and completely unnecessary risk when you’re going to the trouble of organising such a strict regime.

    • meta says:

You can still be contagious if you have a fever after 10 days or present any other symptoms other than cough or anosmia. This is from the official NHS guidance. So what happens if you still have such symptoms after 12 days or 18 days (test positive on day 8)? Some people might even have a fever longer than 18 days.

      • Callum says:

Especially as they aren’t necessarily going to be telling them about the symptoms if they’re worried that they will be quarantined for longer.

      • Margaret says:

Or you may have caught covid at the hotel itself, like others in places like Australia have.

  • Paul says:

£30 night for room £20 for food so £700 for 14 days! Which Tory donor pockets the grand! With mass testing and security on minimum wage can’t help but think someone doing very well out of this.

If it’s 10 years for not filling out the form correctly! How long will Johnson and his odious gov minister get for their negligence, herd immunity policy, care home and PPE scandals?

    • bafan says:

This is all about heading off the public inquiry isn’t it. No doubt the report will excoriate it them, then it won’t be released on some trumped up “national security” grounds or something.

    • Ian M says:

It’s 11 nights in the hotel, so £550. Where’s the remaining £1,200 going? Maybe it’s £1000 for the mini bus contractor to drive them to the hotel…

      • Callum says:

The security, the transport, the admin, the testing staff, the PPE, the empty rooms, the extended stays for positive patients, the medical treatment, the welfare support?

  • Anon says:

Security Guards would be charged around £16.50ppph+vat and paid the living wage.

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

I bet the quarantine Hotel for Farnborough will be the Aviator, can’t have Boris’s cheque books staying in a Premier Inn!
