Leeds Bradford Airport gets approval for new terminal

Whilst British Airways appears to have given up on Leeds Bradford Airport, the airport itself sees a positive future.

Leeds City Council approved plans for a new terminal building last week.

The airport had originally proposed to expand its existing terminal, parts of which date back to the 1960s.

Leeds Bradford Airport new terminal building

Whilst this plan had received planning approval, the airport chose to drop it and returned with a fresh plan. This will see a brand new 34,000 square metre building built within the existing airport boundary.

There are, unfortunately, no plans for a major upgrade to the surrounding road and rail infrastructure. This has always been the pinch point for the airport, with many local residents finding it easier to reach Manchester or Doncaster Sheffield.

You can find out more in this PDF brochure. An image of the new building is below.

Hyatt doesn’t charge resort fees on redemptions either.

More generally, resort fees are a complete scam but unlikely to go away as they have become part of life in the US. They’re often insane ($100 at the Ritz Carlton Dorado in PR…?).

  • Russ says:

The premium economy article is interesting and I’ve spoken to few people who feel they’ve ‘arrived’ travelling in these seats. Appears they’re an aspirational seat for those who regularly fly in economy rather than a threat to business class revenue which will no doubt be a relief to airlines. Be interesting to know the split between PE customers paying cash and those paying with points.

Will Delta introduce PE to align with Virgin?

If it hasn’t already been mentioned, Both LTN and LBA are airports at significant elevation for the UK at 160M and 210m respectively, and also high up relative to the existing rail infrastructure. To make the LBA proposal stack up, they really need a decent twice daily service to LHR given that Leeds is the fourth largest Metro area in the UK after London Birmingham and Manchester.

    • Stagger Lee says:

They had that decent service but got rid of it a couple of years ago

    • Mr(s) Entitled says:

But surely Leed’s problem is the proximity to Manchester. You could make an argument that BA are better operating a good service to MAN on the expectation that this will pull in some Leeds catchment rather than divide the offering and serve neither particularly well.

    • Bagoly says:

I knew Leeds was the highest, but I had not thought of Luton as being (comparatively) high.
Could be relevant if the Greenland ice cap melts.
When I wondered about Scotland being more ready for that recently I realised that all the airports there are by the coast and so pretty low.
Although that doesn’t stop Newquay being surprisingly high (next behind Luton?)

I am a former resident of north Leeds; probably lived about 15 miles from LBA at the time. I can say with some confidence that – for any number of reasons – it is the most unpleasant commercial airport I have ever had the misfortune to experience. And I am a veteran of multiple airports in India and China. It will have to be one hell of a new terminal to tempt me back there.

  • Jay H says:

At the risk of sounding stupid…

I can only see flights 354 days in advance not 355. Am I missing something?

E.g today I should see Sunday
    13 March 2022

But I can only book Saturday 12 March 2022?

  • Dmitri says:

What the point to build a new terminal while infrastructure plan still unclear. Pointless.

  • Ray says:

Not sure about Hilton not charging resort fees for redemptions, stayed in Key Largo 2 years ago and got charged them for the stay. May have changed since, however they were still showing when I did a dummy booking for later this year.
