Virgin Atlantic extends Virgin Flying Club status and vouchers – for the fifth time

Virgin Atlantic has announced a further set of status extensions for Flying Club members.

If you have Gold or Silver status with Virgin, you will see an additional SIX months of status has been applied to your account.

(If you don’t see it yet, give it 24 hours. Do not call Virgin Atlantic.)

This is the fifth extension that members have received to date, and means that members who held status in March 2020 will have seen a total extension of 24 months.

All outstanding Clubhouse, upgrade and 2-4-1 vouchers have also been extended by a further six months.

It’s not clear if Virgin Atlantic sees this as a final extension or not. Even if long-haul travel to the USA opens up in the next few months, both Virgin Atlantic and British Airways face a more fundamental problem.

Current status programmes are based on generating a certain number of members at each tier in order to control benefits such as lounge access.

Unless there are medium term changes to how the loyalty programmes operate – such as permanent cuts in tier point requirements – the airlines will soon start to haemorrhage status members as they fail to requalify. BA’s 25% cut in tier point requirements is unlikely to be enough to keep the tier numbers where they should be, and alienating current status members will be the last thing that anyone wants to do.

  • Tom says:

I am a status matcher from BA and just received an email from Virgin confirming the 6 months extension- online account still doesn’t reflect this yet though.

  • Luka says:

Rob, any news on extensions from BA?

  • Chris D says:

I wonder if these many exensions will count for the purposes of “held gold for 10 years” to earn VS lifetime gold?

    • Oh! Matron! says:

I thought that had gone, with only the 1 million miles as a requirement? I see the 461,500 miles I need to get to 1 million becoming somewhat harder in the future

      • mr_jetlag says:

I don’t see the 1m requirement for VS lifetime gold anywhere, just 10 yrs and 7500 tier points.

  • GJB says:

Meanwhile my Centurion perk upgrade to Gold status has been pending since June. Get it sorted please VA!

    • Babyg says:

Surely centurion should take care of this?

    • Alan says:

Maybe Virgin Australia are still working on it? 😉 (IATA code for Virgin Atlantic is VS – sorry, couldn’t resist 😜)

  • davefl says:

I just checked my voucher email and it says it’s viewable on the website? Anyone know where? Or is it only on the app these days?

    • EwanG says:

Your credit card 241 voucher? Will be shown on your activity page within your Flying Club account. Should say “You have qualified for a credit card reward voucher” – older vouchers will say “Virgin Atlantic Reward Credit Card – Reward Qualification”. Also viewable in the Virgin Red app if linked.

      • davef says:

Thanks Ewan. I’m even more confused now. Had to change the dates to go back to 2019 on the website, much easier on the Red app. Didn’t realise you could see it there.
Email says qualified for voucher 10/12/19 which I can see on the app, but then I’ve another entry 14/7/2020 which says I’ve spent 10k and qualified for a reward.
Looks like I’m going to have to contact them and find out what the real end date will be

        • Alan says:

Yep, they really need to sort out their website better to show them. I find the easiest way is just to WhatsApp them.

        • Louie says:

You’ll probably find you’ve got two vouchers. I have, though I only qualified for one!

          • davef says:

            Interesting, here’s hoping 🙂

          • davef says:

I have indeed. No idea why. Tweeted them and within half an hour got a very comprehensive reply on dates and how to use them. Fantastic service.

  • Dave says:

By contrast, I had to delay a USA trip with BA by 2 years due to covid and they only extended my 2for1 voucher by 6 months. When BA further complicated matters by introducing a ‘new’ voucher that can’t be combined with an ‘old’ voucher, I asked them for a one week further extension on one of my vouchers so I could still use it for the same trip and still haven’t had a reply several months later. Poor show BA.

  • Deborah says:

    Virgin Query,
Spent 3 years saving Virgin miles for next summer to Orlando, now it looks like no reward seats direct to MCO. I have 150,000 and a ticket for the credit card and need 3 tickets, any suggestions best way?

    • Babyg says:

there are loads of seats in may/june, (looks like from july 4th may not be released yet?? ) anyway i suggest you setup seatspy alerts if you want july/august if, also take any seats you can get, e.g. if only 2 come up, grab them and try and add another later..

    • ChasP says:

      Orlando is always difficult
Because they offered an extra voucher if you didnt cash out and then were among the first to honour EU261 rights to rebook they already have pretty full planes for next year already. Hence prices are very high (3 or 4 times the price this year)

So I wouldnt hold out much hope for reward seats from London but Id look for flights from elsewhere eg MAN or EDI

  • Scallder says:

Do remember that Virgin will allow you to attach vouchers to existing bookings – ended up doing this for a booking in November and got back just under 100k Points as that way can at least keep the points in the account.

    • Paul says:

That sounds intriguing, as in retrospectively use the voucher and get a partial miles refund?

      • Scallder says:

Yep exactly! I had done a cash PE booking and used miles to upgrade to Upper. So having booked back in January called them last week and they took the vouchers off my account and added the miles back in that had been used.
