Which British Airways European lounges are open?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

During the pandemic, British Airways has been quietly cutting lounge access at many of its European destinations. This has not been well communicated to customers who often did not find out until they were turned away at the lounge door.

Most of the lounges used by British Airways are still open, so anyone with a Priority Pass can usually still get access. Some HfP readers have been frustrated to see Iberia passengers getting access whilst BA passengers do not.

There is no proof that these cancellations are permanent. We have already seen BA adding back lounge access at domestic airports such as Jersey as travel has picked up. Bologna has returned to the list in the last couple of days, for example.

EDIT: we have updated the list on 12/9 with reader feedback, thank you

The latest official position can be found by checking the oneworld alliance lounge access page here. When looking up a lounge you need to look for British Airways to be listed under the ‘Airlines’ heading.

Flyertalk has also put together a crowd sourced list of which BA lounges are currently open. You can find it in this thread in the wiki part at the top. You will also find information there on lounges outside the UK, but treat the oneworld website as the most accurate source.

As of last night, the oneworld website showed that the following European airports had lounges which were accepting British Airways passengers:

  • Alicante
  • Athens
  • Barcelona
  • Berlin
  • Bologna
  • Brussels
  • Copenhagen
  • Frankfurt (JAL flight days only)
  • Gibraltar
  • Gran Canaria
  • Ibiza
  • Istanbul
  • Lanzarote
  • Larnaca
  • Lisbon
  • Ljubljana
  • Madrid
  • Malaga
  • Malta
  • Moscow
  • Nice
  • Palma
  • Prague
  • Reykjavik
  • Sofia
  • Split
  • Tenerife
  • Thessaloniki
  • Tirana
  • Valenica
  • Venice
  • Warsaw
  • Zagreb
  • Zurich

There may be other lounges which have begun to accept BA passengers again but which have not been picked up yet. Check the oneworld website link above for the official line and please post in the comments if you spot any.

The ‘open’ list is slightly eclectic – Spain-heavy, probably due to the Iberia relationship, with some huge omissions. The one I use the most – Hamburg – is gone, for example, although Priority Pass remains valid.

If you want to secure lounge access for an upcoming trip, you can get a Priority Pass for free with the American Express Platinum card. Both the main cardholder and one supplementary cardholder receive a Priority Pass, and each card admits two people for free.

This means that you can get a family of four people into a lounge for free, as many times as you want if both the main and supplementary cardholder are travelling together. There is NO LIMIT to the number of lounge visits you can make for free.  Our full review of Amex Platinum is here.

You can also get a ‘two free visits’ Priority Pass if you apply for American Express Preferred Rewards Gold. As Amex Gold is free for the first year, this is an easy way of getting totally free airport lounge access for a couple. Further visits after the first two free ones are charged at £20. The Amex Gold route is by far the easiest option for a one-off trip.

The ANA Lounge in Lisbon has BA listed.

  • James says:

We flew BA Club Europe from Athens recently, checked the BA site and were pleased to see a choice of lounges we had access to. However at check-in we were informed that unfortunately BA have no current arrangement with any of the lounge providers. Same for a friend who returned from Warsaw last week, he had Priority Pass though so got access that way. I think it’s poor show that BA lead passengers believe they’ll have lounge access only to be told at the airport BA has no contract in place.

    • Goran says:

I have returned from Athens in the beginning of August (with BA) and we had lounge access.

  • James K says:

Venice Marco Polo turned me away on Wednesday when I was travelling through…

    • Rob says:

      Thanks

    • Richie says:

      That’s a shame, a lovely lounge.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I imagine Venice got the lounge access back at the same time as Bologna so it’s possible all staff aren’t aware yet. Make sure you spend a few minutes to fill in the complaint form making it clear that the oneworld site says you have access and you were denied on the door.

    • Matthew says:

Don’t know if anyone will see this since it’s been a few days since the article went live but I just returned from Venice on September 13th and was able to access the lounge via my BA boarding pass.

  • The Jetset Boyz says:

“Spain-heavy, probably due to the Iberia relationship”

Apart from Madrid they’re all AENA lounges which are used by all airlines operating to to the airport that offer lounge access. These lounges also allow access to Priority Pass and similar programs and with Spain being a popular holiday destination, there’s a possibility for them to make a decent income.

  • Terry S says:

No lounge at Nice T1 yesterday. Not that I’d have had time to use it after the enormous queue for check in (priority lanes were used by all). Think they may be closing T1 again but don’t know if there’s a lounge available in T2.

  • ACK says:

Looked up BUD lounge access on the oneworld page. It lists the mastercard lounge as having access with IB J, but the fact is that it being a MC lounge, only certain MC cards are allowing access, airline ticket or status is useless. It also lists the platinum lounge. Between jun and mid aug I’ve been turned away multiple times both with BA gold and when flying AY J, ticketed as BA, due to BA not having an active contract. IB would have been fine. At the time oneworld webpage said access is fine, just like now. So I’m not exactly sure I believe what’s on it.

    • Nick says:

The operating airline pays, subject to oneworld lounge access rules. So if you’re flying AY, whatever terms BA may or may not have with a lounge are irrelevant. BA isn’t going to start contracting with lounges in HKT, PER or wherever just because their customers might fly on QR, QF, etc. All your gold card does is give you access if AY offers a lounge.

    • Save East Coast Rewards says:

Prague also has MasterCard branded lounges but they allow certain airlines that have contracts with them entry as well as the lounge cards

  • Rob says:

    Zurich added

  • Greenpen says:

    Used Alicante on August 21st.
