New Amex Platinum holders ARE getting the £200 fine dining restaurant credit

At the start of the month, American Express launched a £200 dining credit for holders of The Platinum Card.

Cardholders will receive 100% back when they spend at participating restaurants, up to a cumulative £200. The offer will run until 31st December 2021.

Unlike similar ‘100% cashback’ offers last year, it appears that new applicants after 1st September ARE being given this offer.

American Express £200 Platinum dining credit

I have had a number of emails from readers who recently applied for The Platinum Card.

Once they had made a few transactions, the first batch of Amex Offers appeared on their card and the £200 dining credit was among them. Some had called Amex and managed to get it added before their Amex Offers started to appear.

Now …. for regulatory purposes we need to be very clear here:

We are NOT saying that you are guaranteed to receive the £200 fine dining credit if you apply for The Platinum Card today.

Caveat emptor etc. You have no right to the deal as it is not listed as a card benefit on the American Express website.

All I can tell you is that a number of readers have reported getting it. No-one has told me that they did not get it, although you should put less faith in this because people rarely mention not getting something they were not expecting!

Where can I spend my £200 fine dining credit?

The participating restaurants are here.

If you’re in London, you’re laughing. The list of restaurants is simply outstanding, from 3-star Michelin restaurants through to more casual groups such as The Ivy.

The Ivy Harrogate is pictured above – there are a fair number of non-London restaurants included although there do seem to be big geographic gaps. If you don’t live or work in the M25 then you may want to study the list in detail.

There are over 1,000 participating restaurants across 15 countries, so if you live in Sheffield and think you’ve missed out, you may be able to use it on any foreign trip you’re planning before year end.

Here is a random London selection for the letter ‘B’:

  • Bagatelle
  • Balthazar
  • Bar des Pres
  • Bluebird
  • Benares
  • Bentley’s Oyster Bar & Grill
  • Bob Bob Ricard
  • Brasserie Zedel
  • Bread Street Kitchen
  • Butlers Wharf Chophouse

…. and that is just ‘B’.

Our full review of The Platinum Card is here.

Remember that, until 2nd November, you will also receive 60,000 Membership Rewards points if you meet the target spend and the bonus criteria. These convert into:

  • 60,000 Avios
  • 60,000 Virgin Points
  • 60,000 Emirates, Etihad, Flying Blue, Alitalia, Asia Miles, Delta, Finnair, Qantas or SAS miles
  • 40,000 Singapore Airlines miles
  • 120,000 Hilton Honors points
  • 90,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
  • 180,000 Radisson Rewards points
  • 4,000 Club Eurostar points

….. and many other non-travel rewards.  I wrote this article on the most valuable Membership Rewards redemptions.

Our review also looks at all of the other card benefits such as airport lounge access via Priority Pass.

To reiterate, we are NOT promising that you will receive the £200 fine dining credit if you apply and you do so at your own risk. Other readers over the past 10 days or so have been successful, however.

Would be really helpful if someone could list all the Michelin starred restaurants that are participating…

    • Cat says:

Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, Le Gavroche, Core by Clare Smyth, Helene Darroze at the Connaught, Benares, Marcus, Hakkasan, a couple of the Gordon Ramsay ones…

I’ve probably missed one or two out, but they’re the ones that jump out of the list at me.

      • Mark says:

Core and Helene Darroze are great.

        • Cat says:

          My favourite is Le Gavroche.

It used to be Ducasse, but the Dorchester is owned by the government of Brunei, a country which recently wrote a law that allows the death penalty for being gay or committing adultery, and that just leaves a bad taste in the mouth that no amount of amuse-bouches can get rid of.

        • Pat says:

I couldn’t get a table for core. Even in December but managed to get a reservation at Helene D. Cannot wait

          • Neil Spellings says:

I’ve just seen their 117 page wine list with bottles going for up to £35k with at least 20 bottles over £10k. Not going to be a problem reaching the spending threshold there to trigger ones £200 I think!

      • Rob says:

You seem to be a busy man. Yesterday you expected us to run through every major global city and list the Air France, KLM and BA taxes to fly there, and today you want someone else to go through 1,000 restaurants and break out the starred ones. You could just get yourself a PA …

        • Cat says:

          🤣 Ouch!

          • Anna says:

Good to see you Cat! We’re stuck with the regional Ivies mainly but the credit is going to come in very useful for the teenager’s birthday meal on Saturday in Harrogate so I’m not complaining as he’ll be very happy with a posh burger and a big chocolate pudding.

          • Cat says:

            Hey Anna!
We’re using it to celebrate our birthdays too – at Le Gavroche in half term, when I managed to find a midweek booking at a time when I could get all squiffy and not worry about hangovers and teenagers not mixing!
Will reply more later, must teach!
            Cat

          • Lyn says:

Sounds like an excellent idea, Cat. Hope you really enjoy the birthday celebrations!

          • Cat says:

Not much to add to earlier, except that there are few teenagers that aren’t happy with a posh burger and a big chocolate pudding!

Well, having typed that and upon reflection, perhaps the vegans wouldn’t be happy!

It sounds like a fab birthday treat though.

          • Cat says:

Thanks Lyn, we’re very much looking forward to it. The list of things I’ve missed in this pandemic is pretty extensive, but fine dining is definitely in there somewhere!

            Bring on the petit fours!

        • Tania says:

I got the offer last week, wasn’t expecting it so it’s a great surprise. The restaurant selection in Manchester is somewhat limited, but I can live with a number of free lunches at the Ivy!

        • Matthew says:

          I know…and not even a please?!

      • Michael C says:

Both Benares and Hakkasan have great short set lunches, if you fancy inviting a couple of pals!

        • Cat says:

The business lunch at Le Gavroche is an incredible bargain too, if it still exists.

      • Lyn says:

The restaurant in Girona – El Celler de Can Roca.

    • Andrew says:

      Opheem in Birmingham.

  • Dragonfly says:

Am back in AUS (currently have UK Amex Plat card), so cannot use this dining credit 😞 because there is no AUS restaurant on the list, and there is no chance of leaving AUS to travel anywhere 😫

    • Louie says:

Not much chance of dining out anywhere in much of the country at the moment anyway.

  • Matthew says:

Has anyone seen this offer on the supplementary card as well as the main card?

    • Jonathan says:

No. Amex got burned on that with the first Waitrose offer so wouldn’t expect them to make that mistake again!

  • NigelthePensioner says:

Is this offer not limited to the first X,000 people to register it to their card, like most other offers?
Nicely, it is £400 on the Centurion card! 😊

    • Andrew says:

No limit – open to all, like the Waitrose ones in the past.

    • sloth says:

surely you would expect £800 on the centurion since the fee is 4x plat…so you are being short changed ;p

  • Gareth says:

After all the chat last time, in the bonus Avios eligibility section, why does it not confirm you’re fine if you’ve held business gold in the last 24 months? Or are we not so sure any more?

  • Andrew H says:

    Questions…

Does the insurance include cruises (some don’t)?
How do I find out if a pre-existing condition is covered, or could be covered? (Atrial fibrillation that has been treated by Cardioversion and is not currently present, though can relapse; it’s a common condition for pre-existing condition insurance…)

      • Andrew H says:

Thanks Rob. I wouldn’t be covered so probably not worth going for the card though maybe they offer a top up premium…

..it’s a strange one as currently I HAVE no condition, but have received treatment in the last few months. There’s a pre-disposition to it reocurring.

I think it’s a common insurance issue as the Avanti insurance I looked at was very precise in what it was, what treatment I’d had (cardioversion) etc

Probably have to go for the Amex business option

        • Sukes says:

Amex Plat/AXA will not entertain any travel insurance medical add-on which is a real short-coming.

  • Martin says:

Can I use the ivy in two different cities or is it cumulative in the cgaib

  • Thywillbedone says:

Anyone know how to sign up for the Platinum benefits for, say, Hertz when you are already a Hertz Gold member? I am getting a ‘join now’ page at Hertz which allows me to sign up but there is no upgrade account option? Adding benefits seems far from slick…

    • P4D says:

It’s a pain on their webpage. Email their support asking for an upgrade, they sorted mine within a day or two (same with Avis)
