Nectar and eBay have released details of a very generous Black Friday offer.

For one hour – between noon and 1pm on Friday – you will receive a crazy 50 Nectar points per £1 you spend.

This offer only seems to be available via the Nectar app under ‘Partner Offers’, although not for everyone. It does seem quite widely available, however, based on a quick survey I did of readers yesterday. It is not mentioned on the eBay home page.

If you don’t see it in the app, try registering via this page of the Nectar website.

The base earning rate at eBay is 1 Nectar point (0.625 Avios) per £1 spent. With this offer, you would receive 50 Nectar points worth 31.25 Avios per £1 spent.

Importantly, as with all recent Nectar / eBay offers, there is a cap of 300 base Nectar points per transaction. This means that you will only earn the bonus on the first £300 you spend. Your Nectar earning is capped at (£300 x 50) 15,000 points which would convert into 9,375 Avios.

What is the small print?

Before you can earn Nectar points from eBay, you need to link your Nectar and eBay accounts via the link on this page.

You need to be targetted for this offer via the Nectar app and you must register for the offer by clicking through to eBay using the link in the app. No registration = no bonus.

If you value an Avios at 1p, you are getting a 31% rebate on your spending.

There is a £10 minimum spend required.

You can only earn the bonus on one ITEM. It isn’t clear what happens if you put multiple items in your basket.

Only ‘Buy It Now’ items will qualify.

The standard eBay rules on excluded categories will apply. Full details of excluded categories are here but in summary, you won’t earn on:

  • Cars, Motorcycles and Vehicles (parts and accessories are NOT excluded)
  • Holidays & Travel
  • Property
  • Gift Vouchers & Coupons
  • Baby Feeding: Formula

‘Gift vouchers’ is a key one to note.

Conclusion

This is, clearly, an exceptionally generous deal if there is something suitable – and, let’s be honest, eBay sells most things – on your shopping list.

The ‘sweet spot’ would be an item worth around £300 (a games console?) which is rarely discounted elsewhere.

However, this offer is still worth jumping on even if you only want a £10 book or similar. (I have started buying new books on eBay as it is generally cheaper than Amazon these days. There are multiple booksellers on the site with high volumes of positive feedback.)

      Player 2 should be more ambitious with their pricing we are going for 299.99. Player 1 should also consider if they have an item to sell – perhaps one that Player 2 might wish to buy for just under £300

      Yes, sorry. Bad wording on my behalf… P2 has an ebay offer for £1 FVF. P2 also has a jacket kicking around that P1 would like to buy for £300.

        Ideally, the players would be registered with different addresses, any device used to log on to P1’s account would have never been used with P2’s account and vice versa, and they would have never accessed ebay with the same IP addresses.

        Although since managed payments, people previously banned from ebay have been able to register under their real names and most of them haven’t been kicked off yet.

    So would this potentially work?

    Sell an item to a friend/family member and wait for the points to post. Then convert them to avios.
    Then issue a refund for the item on ebay and get the ebay fee back?

      I’d expect the bonus nectar points to post well after the period for any refund has passed.

      Why not just hand the cash back in person happy in the knowledge that the nectar points/avios still far outweigh the ebay/paypal fees incurred?

      Open a new nectar and throwaway BAEC, buy something from any seller that offers free returns. If the nectar posts within the returns period, convert to avios, then return the item.

      The nectar account will go negative but you’re going to abandon it anyway. You should probably empty out the fake BAEC account by adding it to a household account and using the avios.com trick to have the exact amount of avios for a redemption. Then kick out the fake account from the household.

      You can have negative Nectar points. I did this once – I had £5 worth of Nectar points, spent them at Sainsbury’s on Sunday and then 1 hour later converted them to Ebay £5 voucher. On Monday I had -1000 points 🙂
      So I would expect the same here..
      Also it says in T&C that points will be awarded in 28 days so probably you won’t be able to return your item.

    Got this offer but at a loss as to what I can purchase from eBay ie something I would typically buy elsewhere but can instead get from eBay.
