If you are planning a stay at a Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental, Hotel Indigo etc this autumn, there is an interesting new offer available.

You can earn at least 1,000 Avios on every 2+ night IHG hotel booking.

But it isn’t that simple …..

How do I earn Avios with IHG?

Most IHG One Rewards members choose, unsurprisingly, to collect IHG One Rewards points on their stays.

However, if you don’t have an IHG One Rewards account, there isn’t much point in collecting a handful of points from a one-off stay. In this scenario, it makes sense to take Avios instead.

As you can see on this page of ba.com, you can earn 2 Avios per $1 spent at most IHG brands if you choose to collect airline miles instead of points. You can make the switch in your IHG One Rewards profile.

With this offer, you will earn 1,000 bonus Avios on top of your ‘2 Avios per $1’ base Avios.

This new offer works like this:

  • you must stay by 31st October
  • you must stay for a minimum of two nights
  • your IHG account must be set to earning miles and not points

Existing bookings may count if they were made after 15th August, but this would depend on IHG not enforcing the rule about booking via the special BA page on ihg.com.

One final thought ….

Even if you do collect IHG One Rewards points, you may still want to turn on this Avios offer for a cheap stay.

1,000 bonus Avios are worth around £10 in our view.

Let’s imagine that you pay £100 for a cheap two-night Holiday Inn Express stay. After knocking off VAT and converting to $, you would earn 210 Avios at 2 per $1. With the bonus, you would receive 1,210 Avios which we value at £12.10.

It is very unlikely that a cheap two-night Holiday Inn Express stay will get you £12.10-worth of IHG One Rewards points. You might want to swap your account from ‘earning points’ to ‘earning miles’ for such stays and claim the 1,000 bonus Avios.

Full details – and the booking link you are meant to use – are on this special page of ihg.com.

“pay £100 for a cheap two-night Holiday Inn Express stay.” Which Holiday Inn Express lets you stay two nights for £100? I can get close but not sub £100 for two nights?

Generally you check miserable places at miserable times of the year. It won’t be valid for this offer, but try a weekend break on the 5th-7th January. I’m getting under £50 for Hamilton, Halbeath, Bradford, Gloucester, Bath & Swindon.

When I go through my Corporate Perks site, I’ve picked up a few at £44 a night.

  • Drue23 says:

If I switch my earning to Avios what happens to my existing IHG rewards points? Do they remain there for use or do they get auto converted to Avios? I don’t want to lose my existing points by temporarily switching across to Avios.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      They stay within IHG.

Being able to chose between collecting IHG or airline points has long been an option in the scheme.
