Doncaster Sheffield Airport to close in October

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is to permanently close at the end of October.

The owner, Peel Group, has – it is believed – decided to turn the site into a warehouse complex.

The airport is well situated geographically to be a logistics hub and, ironically, benefits from the ‘Great Yorkshire Way’ road upgrade in 2018 which was designed to connect it directly to the motorway network.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport to close

The warehouse sector has been exceptionally ‘hot’ in recent months, and there is now a major shortage of capacity in many places, primarily serving online retail. Asda recently sold its warehouse network to Blackstone for £1.7 billion in a deal which was only expected to raise £950 million.

The airport has confirmed internally that it has lost £170 million since it opened and, on current forecasts, will lose another £45 million over the next five years.

The ‘consultation’ will run until the end of August. However, Peel Group has reportedly told staff that – under no scenario – will it remain operational under Peel Group ownership. Unless the local authority steps in to buy the site to keep the airport open, it will close at the end of the Summer flying season in late October.

Peel Group acquired the former RAF Finningley site in 1999 and opened it as a commercial airport in 2005. Substantial sums have been invested in the terminal and airfield since that time.

Despite this, and despite the popularity of the airport in the region, the only airline with a base at Doncaster Sheffield is TUI. Wizz Air – previously the largest carrier at the airport – withdrew its aircraft in June, apparently in a dispute about fees.

Peel Group has already had success developing an adjacent site to the airport, GatewayEast, which includes a recent contract to develop a 400,000 sq ft logistics and advanced manufacturing site.

The press release put out by the airport does not confirm the closure. The actual announcement says that ‘the Board of Doncaster Sheffield Airport has begun a review of strategic options for the Airport’.

Peel Group has ‘reviewed the conclusions of the Board of DSA and commissioned external independent advice in order to evaluate and test the conclusions drawn’.

To be clear, the airport is not closing immediately and any passengers with flights booked for July, August, September and October should not be concerned. Any booking for November onwards is at high risk of cancellation, however.

Take one council so corrupt the Government has to step in to run it, one huge developer who promised the earth, rip the people off and the Queen will grant you city status. Come on Rotherham and Barnsley, go bent and prosper!!!

York based, never found well priced flights from Robin Hood, so never used it…

If i fly solo i go from Manchester / Leeds etc, but as a family, it can be cost effective to drive all the way to LHR when flying to Asia.

I love and hate Manchester, great rail service, T2 is nice, but the other terminals are rubbish – lots of good deals, so i try to use them.

It’s a shame, if they wanted to make it popular, i am sure they could, but as it’s been pointed out – it’s get hub for cargo.

  • Paul says:

Any proof that it is definitely closing before posting an article saying it is??

    • Rob says:

Yes. I know someone who works where and who was at the staff briefing from management. The only way it will be saved is if the local authority chooses to buy it.

Everything disappears after Brexit, it is sad and scary to think about what changes will take place in the next three years.

Sheffield is hoping to hold the Eurovision 2023 next year, as it is twinned with Donetsk in the Ukraine, as they are unable to hold this event next year, we are asking for people to vote for this to happen here in Sheffield. This would surely help Doncaster Airport monetarily and add status? Please people vote for the Eurovision to be held in Sheffield next year alongside voting for Doncaster airport to stay open.
