Hyatt opens the first Thompson hotel in Europe

A new Thompson Hotel has opened in Madrid. It is just round the corner from Gran Via metro station and features 175 rooms and suites.

Hyatt, which owns the Thompson brand, is calling it a “celebration of thoughtfully curated style and global sophistication with an authentic Madrilenian flair, delivering an exciting destination for culturally astute travellers looking to immerse themselves within the vibrant Spanish capital.”

I think that means it’s meant to be a trendy, design-led hotel aimed at leisure travellers ….

Hyatt’s Thompson brand in general is a bit of an odd one, as it’s not entirely clear what it offers. It was acquired as part of a larger deal a few years ago, and the company seems intent on rolling it out rather than converting the hotels into existing Hyatt brands.

Thompson appears to be positioned an upmarket boutique hotel brand – I am due to stay in one in New York soon, so let’s see. They tend to be five star properties and so positioned a notch above Andaz.

Before anyone comments that there is already a Thompson hotel in Europe, in London, this is no longer the case. The Thompson in London, called Belgraves, which was in a mainly residential area near Harvey Nichols, rebranded after a short period and is now The Hari Hotel.

The Thompson Madrid website is here.

The Thompson could offer some great value award redemption being a Cat 4. Odd they didn’t stick it into The Unbound Collection branding.

    • Thywillbedone says:

Indeed. I note as I am one brand away from getting a free night in a Cat 4 as part of the ‘brand explorer’ promo …

  • Will in SJC says:

Once you’ve been to a Thompson you will get it. Much nicer than an Andaz, more trendy than a stuffy (larger) Park Hyatt but still somewhat luxurious. Very much aimed at the 35-45 bracket. I believe Not in the unbound collection because there are Hyatt/Thompson branding standards across the Thompson Hotels- unbound is just a pick n mix of hotels with varying quality/standards.

I’ve struggled to find anything in IHG or Hilton that compares to them. They are a clear price notch above Kimpton and Kimptons tend to be older properties that are remodeled slightly.

New Thompson is only 200 metres from Hyatt Centric Gran Via which we stayed at in July. Maybe that affects which brand they can align it with?
Incidentally Hyatt Centric was excellent with lovely breakfast and a roof terrace bar reserved only for hotel guests. Highly recommended.

    • Rob says:

Yes, stayed there, liked it. There is a review.

    • peckishpassport says:

+1 on the Hyatt Centric in Madrid. Stayed there twice and couldn’t fault it. Excellent Globalist recognition too!

The rooftop bar is open to non-hotel guests however hotel guests have reserved tables + priority seating.

Arsenal may have started the season pretty well (opposition & the 2nd half at OT notwithstanding) but £591 to see them against Liverpool and it isn’t even proper hospitality is a pi55-take!

  • Rhys says:

I’m due to stay at The Beekman later this month!

    • jj says:

Don’t order a beer in the bar, Rhys. You will be charged $12 (plus service) for the barman to flip open a 13oz can of mediocrity. Real beer is widely available in other local bars. On the other hand, the Beekman’s bar is a marvellous place for a cocktail: a beautifully designed, fantastically atmospheric spot underneath a vast atrium.

      Enjoy.

This Thompson is great value at Cat 4 – I guess it will go up to Cat 6 when they are more established. I’ve managed to book a week in December and apply a Suite upgrade for 93.000 points (one night was 18,000) – current reduced Suite price is around 625-675 € a night so reckon I am getting good value for my points 🙂

    • Daftboy says:

Likewise – staying for a night in December, all the decent 4/5 stars were going for between €400 and €500 a night, so delighted to get a redemption at 15,000 points

Prices seem high generally in Madrid at the moment, and that’s before you get into the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental etc pricing at €1k…

  • JDB says:

We have stayed twice at the Thompson in Zihuatanejo, which is good, in a great setting but can be extortionately expensive for the better rooms, although entry prices quite cheap. It is four star rather than five, principally because the rooms are quite spartan. The food was very good, the service exceptionally good throughout the hotel and it had one of the best beach service setups we have come across with well spaced out seats and a proper table and chairs behind the loungers for breakfast or lunch.

  • mutley says:

As an interesting footnote, the renamed Belgraves was going to be called the Hari Monk Hotel, after the famous pianist Thelonious Monk who stayed there during his 1961 concerts at the nearby Royal Albert Hall, until someone kindly pointed out the rhyming slang connotations.
