RwandAir launches direct Heathrow to Kigali flights

We wouldn’t normally cover route launches of this sort, but it is worth a mention given that RwandAir is planning to join the oneworld alliance alongside British Airways.

Should it go ahead – and we explained more in this article last month – it would open up new options in Central Africa for British Airways Executive Club tier point earning. RwandAir currently serves 28 destinations across East, Central, West, and Southern Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.

As RwandAir CEO Yvonne Makolo said at a conference last month:

“Joining oneworld will help us gradually improve our products and services and what we are offering to our passengers.”

And in a media statement she added:

“We are exploring the possibility of entering the oneworld alliance. This would be a perfect fit for RwandAir and help us forge closer ties with like-minded airline partners overseas.”

RwandAir currently flies from Heathrow to Kigali via a stop in Brussels, using a fleet of next-generation A330neo aircraft.

From 6th November, the Brussels stop disappears. The flights from Heathrow to Kigali will become non-stop.

Frequency is also increasing, from the current three flights per week via Brussels to four flights per week non-stop.

You can already earn and redeem Avios on RwandAir – you don’t need to wait for possible oneworld membership. This is due to the existing partnership with Qatar Airways, which now uses Avios as its reward currency. You can learn more about using Avios on RwandAir in this article.

My guess of the lounge access policy is you can pay £18.50 to buy lounge passes and you can pay an extra £5 to guarantee that you can get in as you can for no1 lounges on their website but it will allow you to do so for more lounges

    • Colin Thames says:

I think that’s spot on, lumma. The existing Dragonpass for Travelpack members allows pre-booking. In fact No1 didn’t even have a charge for booking last week. And I got free FastTrack at Gatwick thrown in.

Not all lounges were bookable at all times but the further ahead you book the easier it is. I suspect there are times when lounges have an airline they give priority to. But if there’s more than one lounge at an airport you should be okay.

When I checked in at No1 I had to show my booking email my card and boarding pass, presumably to check my flight wasn’t more than 3 hours later.

Adding passes costs exactly £18.50 on the Barclays Dragonpass app, which is why I’m sure this is how it’ll work. So I don’t think you can use your PP card. The stay is debited off your DP account when you book.

A shame Barclaycard don’t give a few free passes though.

  • Mike says:

Rwandair news is good for the home office/ taxpayer.

  • Sideshowbob says:

Barclays already had a relationship with Dragonpass through their travel plus current account which gave you 6 free lounge passes a year. I’m surprised they can’t do the same offering with Barclaycard

    • Liz says:

I was thinking the exact same thing. I have the Barclays Travel Pack and have 6 free Dragon passes with that.

  • SteveJ says:

“Don’t ask why Barclaycard has not opted into the LoungeKey lounge access programme which Mastercard offers”…. But why haven’t they!?

    • Colin Thames says:

Apparently World Elite Mastercards issued in Canada use the Dragonpass card. Could this be a trend, or is it just because of an existing relationship Barclays has through the intermediary Life Style Services?

    • David says:

      Barclaycard still pickup the bill.

There are internal scheme (Visa/MC) booklets which document the policy for the level/value of benefit you need to give for each card type.
But what they actually are is pretty much up to the issuer.

  • The Paw 🐾 says:

Considering that it will take £48000 annual spend to break even on the Avios Plus card, I hope there are more benefits coming (World Elite or otherwise)…..

    • Peter K says:

£48000? How did you get that figure?

      • The Paw 🐾 says:

Spend £48000 on the free card and you get 48,000 avios. Spend £48000 on the plus card and you earn £72000 avios. But there’s a £240 fee for the plus card (so 24k avios worth if you value an avios at 1p). So unless you’re spending over £48k a year you’re better off with the free card (assuming 1p value for an Avios). And unless there’s some decent perks introduced for the plus card, it’s not worth getting the plus card if you’re not spending a lot – *paid* lounge access certainly won’t sway anyone towards the plus card…..

        • Jonathan says:

If you spend over £10k per annum and fully maximise the voucher’s potential, (or get a seat by HfP standards a good return on your Avios points), then the monthly fee is nearly always worth swallowing, this especially true on the routes that give the highest valuation of an Avios point based on how many miles you’ll cover per Avios point

        • Peter K says:

Thanks for that. Make more sense now 👍

      • Rob says:

You earn an extra 0.5 Avios per £1, worth 0.5p. Fee is £20 per month. £4,000 of spend earns 2,000 extra Avios worth £20. Total £48,000 per year.

        • Exon88 says:

Thanks for spelling this out. I should have downgraded long before I did.

  • meta says:

I can’t see any availability on RwandaAir through Privilege Club till the end of schedule.

    • Rob says:

Can you book RwandAir online? I thought you had to submit a written request for partners apart from BA?

      • meta says:

There is a search box when you click on partner awards and then it says no availability when I did the search; underneath there was also a message saying 170,000 Avios needed (for J return). I only have 1000 avios at the moment in PC, so maybe that’s why it’s not showing.

  • Novice says:

Is there still no news whether we can get bonuses without paying in 75k???

Why is barclays ignoring the question if this is so. Why don’t they just say so.

    • Rob says:

No idea, but let’s be honest I would be shocked if they would give it to you without earning £75k as the whole point of the promo is to bring in a new generation of well-heeled customers.

  • Colin Thames says:

Rob, is the free Dragonpass offer still available through Regus?
I notice that lounge visits are £19.50 if your DP card comes that route, £1 more than through Barclays.
So if you managed 20 lounge visits a month you’d cover your fee for the Barclaycard! 😉
