Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

For old times’ sake …. earn bonus miles with a Tesco Clubcard deal

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The majority of you reading this won’t know that, in its early days, Head for Points was heavily dominated by Tesco Clubcard special offers.

For many years, Tesco loved giving out bonus points on products. The phrase ‘Birds Eye Roast Beef In Gravy’ will still send a shudder down many spines *. Today Tesco only competes on price, not points.

Tesco used to have a business called Tesco Direct which was basically an Argos clone. There was also Tesco Wine and Tesco Entertainment.

Tesco Clubcard Halfords Motoring Club deal

It wasn’t uncommon to, for example, get 300 Clubcard points (converted to 720 Avios or 750 Virgin Points) for a £5 DVD. A lot of the bonuses were on products that could be flipped on eBay.

It got so crazy that we had to set up a spin off site, Shopper Points, which was dedicated to listing Tesco Clubcard bonus points deals. The site died when Tesco pulled the plug on all of its (unsurprisingly loss making) subsidiary businesses.

So, for old times’ sake, I thought I’d bring them back for one day only.

Get 500 bonus Tesco Clubcard points with Halfords Motoring Club Premium

Tesco has teamed up with Halfords to offer 500 bonus Clubcard points if you sign up for Halfords Motoring Club Premium.

This is currently worth 1,250 Virgin Points or £15 of partner vouchers, such as Hotels.com credit. From 14th June this will drop to 1,000 Virgin Points or £10 of partner vouchers, but you might get your points before then.

Halfords Motoring Club Premium costs £49 per year or £4.99 per month. You are tied in for 12 months so you might as well pay the £49 upfront to save £11.

You get, as well as 500 Clubcard points:

  • a £10 Halfords voucher (there is no minimum spend)
  • a free MOT
  • two free 10 point car checks
  • 5% off various motoring products and services at Halfords
  • 1 x free fitting of wipers, bulbs or batteries

In terms of getting the points, the small print is convoluted. It says:

“Points will be made available to customers who remain Halfords Motoring Club Premium members 14 days after Tesco Clubcard number has been submitted.”

To me, this means that you qualify for the points after 14 days but will not necessarily receive them immediately after 14 days. This may mean you can’t redeem them before the conversion rate drops on 14th June.

This clearly isn’t the most exciting Tesco Clubcard deal ever, but I thought our long term readers may appreciate seeing one again!

With the cut in the conversion rate to Virgin Points, and of course the dropping of Avios as a partner two years ago, this may well be the last one we ever cover.

* In 2005 (pre HfP so we never wrote about it) Tesco gave out 50 Clubcard points (120 Avios) with a 66p pack of ‘Birds Eye Roast Beef In Gravy’. This was a frozen ready meal which looked as bad as the price tag implies. People were buying up freezer loads of the stuff ….

I’m sure a few years before this, probably before HFP’s existence, it was 500 Clubcard points. I spent £500 on 50 CDs and DVDs that I gave away as presents that xmas. I had something like £260 in vouchers arrive. I was looking at a trip to South America in WTP, using an Amex 241 as well, but when they converted, I didn’t know there was a double points conversion going on. I ended up with enough miles to go Club! And loads to spare! We went in May 2012, so that was probably Xmas 2010 or 2011 I “earned” the points. They repeated the offer the following xmas, but the CDs and DVDs weren’t new releases if I recall correctly.

Wish I had bought more Lego from Tesco during those offers. I still have some of the models I bought and they have doubled if not tripled in value.

Tesco indeed given me hundreds of thousands of airmiles.

I was clearing out my old room at my parents house a few weeks ago and found a bag of printer cartridges which expired long ago and found two huge boxes of lego unopened that I never sold as was too big and bulky to sell on eBay at the time.

However fun it all was hunting around the various store for deals, the easiest Clubcard points was from simply using their debit card to buy premium bonds. Was a guaranteed £300 per quarter. That’s what I miss the most!

Probably worth the hassle of selling them now. I’ve still got a few sets from 2016 orders, and they’re selling for 3-4x what I paid.

      • Lev441 says:

Will look into that.. had no idea!

My son hates Lego so a lot of gifts over the years are Sat unopened in his room. Some are getting valuable so I’m using it to teach him about business!

Tesco Direct also had a glitch where 3 for 2, and 2 for (say) £12 combined. You had a max purchase of 99 of an item, so it meant you could get 99 for £12 when a product had both these offers on.

  • JDB says:

The Sainsbury Air Miles offers, when they had the contract before Tesco, we’re even more generous than the Tesco ones.

  • ChasP says:

Heresy I know but I preferred it the when the BOGOF could be combined with the close to date or other offers when you could effectively get paid for taking stock off their hands

    • QFFlyer says:

Haha yes! GBP5 (no pound sign on my keyboard) pizzas reduced to 50p on BOGOF, and it knocked 5.00 off the bill, so minus GBP4 for two pizzas…I had a freezer full of those, I bought them along with a load of DVDs and stuff, the confused bloke at the checkout even handed me the small amount of change the till told him I was owed, when it recorded the total as -0.27 or something!

It was said day in October 2016 when they removed bonus points off gift cards 😪
There were readers here doing £10k a day on Tesco GCs at Esso, to 3v or the pre paid master card gift cards into Ns&i
I could do 35 Tesco gcs in 30 mins at Local Esso garages

  • Yuff says:

    * a sad day
