Marriott’s Moxy Plymouth hotel opens

After long construction delays, Marriott’s Moxy Plymouth hotel opened its doors this week.

The hotel forms part of Millbay, a new waterfront quarter which is currently seeing major regeneration.

At 200 rooms, it is relatively large for a regional hotel. Despite the size the hotel has no dedicated restaurant. Apart from breakfast, food options are limited to small plates ordered from the bar.

The hotel bar will be open 24/7 – I’m not sure what this says about Plymouth! Non-residents must leave at midnight, however.

You can find out more on the Marriott website here.

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya opening in August

If you are planning a trip to Tokyo this year, I wanted to briefly flag that IHG’s Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya now has an opening date – 29th August.

Tokyo is surprisingly low on internationally branded hotels so the addition of somewhere new to stay using points (or get status benefits when paying cash) is welcome.

The hotel website is here.

Am I the only one who does not like the moxy hotels? I actively avoid them now. I find them incredibly uncomfortable, No storage in the rooms, the beds are small and the decor is just annoying

    • Travel Strong says:

I’ve had an excellent time every stay – but only choose to stay there in when in-keeping with the nature of the visit/city. Could not fault Milton keynes and Bristol after a night out! Made good use of the 24hr bar and 24hr bar games, and too inebriated to notice my feet fall off the end of the bed.

But if in Athens or Vienna? I’d like a classier breakfast room with jj and JDB in driving loafers and pressed linen.

The only bad thing about Moxy is the telephone answering machine message, offering “the scoop” on 1, a “chit chat” on 5 – and a host of other intensely cringe inducing options inbetween!

      • JellyFan says:

        This is my attitude also.

I’ve stayed in Moxys in Brooklyn and Minneapolis and enjoyed my visit.

I probably wouldn’t stay in a Moxy in Zürich or Oslo, however.

No! We stayed in the LHR Moxy for a night last year. Bed laughably uncomfortable and small, tiny, cramped and stuffy room that reminded me of a university dorm. Some might think it’s unreasonable to complain but I disagree given the amount of competition at LHR. I was rather annoyed I didn’t just stump up the extra 15 quid or so for our preferred option (Staybridge on Bath Road)

I stayed at the one in Chicago and it was ok. I think it attracts a certain type of clientele on a certain type of trip/weekend away. Drinking & partying helps!

  • The real Swiss Tony says:

I think the reason the bar is 24/7 is that it doubles as reception across all their properties, not just Plymouth.

Only stayed at the Edinburgh Airport one (I think) and am pretty indifferent. Wouldn’t avoid, wouldn’t go out of my way to stay at one either.

Millbay is where the Brittany Ferry leaves for trips to France (Roscoff). The hotel will be super popular as a result

I’m not sure how you can claim that Tokyo is low on international branded hotels. Hilton, Marriott, IHG, Accor, Hyatt, Shangri-La, Pan Pacific, Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Peninsula, Aman, I could go on are all there.

Going to do some leaf peeping this Nov in Japan. Obviously the place is quite expensive… but the Intercontinental Yokohama is a strange outlier…. it’s ridiculously cheap. I book lots of 1 day cancellable just to lock it in. Other than location, is there anything I’m missing why this is going so cheap… cuz the Shinkansen station is 30 minutes away on Tube

    • Andy says:

Yokohama is still kind of out of the way. I did a day trip there when in Tokyo in Feb. 2020. The IC didn’t seem to have much around it from what I remember, so you’ll have a bit of a walk to get to restaurants in the evening, and you’re also adding a bit of travel time each day if you want to go into various districts of Tokyo.

If it’s just for a day or two before you head to somewhere else on the train then I’d say it’s fine, or if you’ve visited Tokyo a few times and don’t mind being away from the main areas.

      • Damien says:

Yeah. I stayed there for one night a redemption 8 years ago. The comped me a club room. lol… I’ve 10 separate bookings with them. but any can be cancelled with 1 days notice (won’t be that big of a dick though). I’ll see how it works out when I’m there. Usually have overlapping bookings. Especially with JR pass. As the weather might make you change your timings.

Is the Henners Foxearle English Sparkling Brut any good?

  • RussellH says:

Many thanks, Rob, for the English Sparkling Brut tip-off.

However, you do NOT need to order via an app, thank goodness.
Just ordered a bottle through the website.
Ideal as I had 3004 points for some time, and no idea what to do with them.
I shall let Virgin decide what to do with the remaining 4 points. 🙂

    • HackinJack says:

I took advantage of this too, I have a stash of points built up before lockdown and earmarked for a USA trip – but I’m unlikely to be able to use for long haul flights now as my wife is not well enough to cope with them. She can cope with English fizz though 🙂

  • Tom says:

Plymouth does not have a luxury hotel and this does not change that situation.
