Mandarin Oriental has been revealed as the operator of the luxury hotel which is being built as part of a major redevelopment on London’s South Bank.
Opening in 2028, Mandarin Oriental Bankside will be part of the riverside Bankside Yards redevelopment near Tate Modern.
As with the new Mandarin Oriental hotel in Mayfair, this is primarily an excuse to make money from branded ‘residences’ – although the hotel element here is a lot bigger than Mayfair. There will be 171 rooms and 70 (for sale) MO-branded apartments.

I’ve been in the Four Seasons Residence’s London complex, Twenty Grosvenor Square, and it is hugely impressive.
This was the first Four Seasons residential project globally to be entirely apartments with no hotel element at all. In terms of finish the communal areas exceed almost all London luxury hotels in terms of quality, although you pay for this by way of a six figure service charge.
The big risk is always that the hotel management group walks away for some reason, effectively wiping out the price premium you paid for the brand in the first place.
