New bonuses for buying Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt hotel points

Two new hotel ‘buy points’ bonuses have popped up:
Get a 40% bonus buying Marriott Bonvoy points
Marriott Bonvoy has launched a new deal if you buy their hotel points.
Via this page of the website, you will get a bonus of up to 40% on all points purchases. There appear to be three versions of the offer, topping out at either 30%, 35% or 40%.
The minimum purchase to get the bonus is 2,000 points. There are two things to note:
- the bonus is NOT tapered – you get 40% extra even if you only buy 2,000 points
- the annual purchase cap has been temporarily raised to 150,000 points – allowing you to buy 210,000 points, including the bonus, for $1,875
You are paying 0.73p per point here which is more than my rule of thumb that a Marriott Bonvoy point is worth 0.5p.
However, you might find it worthwhile if:
- you are topping off your account before making a points booking, or
- you are close to 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points and want to make a transfer into airline miles (you get a bonus of 5,000 airline miles when you transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points into 20,000 airline miles in most programmes), or
- you are planning a stay at a property where you know you will get outsized value
Outsize value is still possible, despite Marriott Bonvoy moving towards revenue-based redemptions. With no reward charts still available, however, you need to look at it on a case by case basis. I recently saw the Courtyard Oxford hotel at 20,000 points or £360, for example – a whopping 1.8p per point.
The page to buy is here. The offer runs to 8th November, following which it will drop to a 30% bonus until 20th December.
Get a 20% bonus buying World of Hyatt points
Hyatt has also launched a ‘buy points’ bonus, but at 20% extra it is the weakest deal of the year.
You can buy via this link. The offer runs to 4th December.
You usually see a 25% or 33% bonus so this is not the greatest ever. However it is debatable whether you will see a better offer before your annual purchase cap of 55,000 points (pre bonus) runs out.
It may still be worthwhile if you are considering a stay in a top tier Park Hyatt such as Paris, where buying the points may be cheaper than paying cash – here’s my Park Hyatt New York review from last month where I did just that.
Hyatt has lets you book suites online for points and there are some bargains to be had. Here is how I used that feature in Paris in 2021. Looking at suite upgrades, you are paying 6,000 points per night – or 9,000 for a premium suite – which would cost you £105 – £160 per night under this offer. This is good value, especially if the suite automatically gets you lounge access too.
The Hyatt ‘buy points’ site is here.
