TAP Air Portugal launches £1,300 New York and Cancun flight deals from the UK

TAP Air Portugal is running a special offer from London and Manchester to New York and Cancun in Business Class.

Whilst you will need to change aircraft in Portugal, the price is at least £600 cheaper than the best deal offered in the current British Airways and Virgin Atlantic sales.

These deals are available from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester.

The UK deals are as low as £1,350 to New York and Cancun.

You need to stay away at least five nights. You can book as far out as next September. Availability seems tight in 2023.

What can you do with the miles you earn?

TAP is part of Star Alliance. You cannot credit your flights to British Airways Executive Club or Virgin Atlantic, neither of whom are in Star Alliance.  However, you can credit the miles to Lufthansa Miles & More or any other Star Alliance frequent flyer programme.

None of the Star Alliance airlines currently have a UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn Star Alliance miles from a UK credit card

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to over 40 airlines at the rate of 3:1.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend. At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 airline miles per £1 spent on the card.

There is a preferential conversion rate to United Airlines – which is a Star Alliance member – of 2 : 1 if you convert 60,000 Bonvoy points at once.

The Star Alliance members which are Marriott Bonvoy transfer partners are: Aegean, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

    TAP is literally the worst airline in the world!

    They cancelled my flight 3 hour before departure and their abhorrent customer service refused to refund me! After a year still haven’t managed to get my money back! Do NOT fly with them, it’s a guarantee you will regret it! I wouldn’t fly them even if they paid me!

      I’m more surprised that as a regular reader you waited so long to to invoke S75 your credit card or take them to court.

        I used Amex and they don’t do S75, after talking for hours on the phone with Amex, they said they’d need a confirmation of a refund promise to do anything! Taking them to court now, but been too busy! I managed to get a flight with VS instead which was delightful and proves why you need to pay that extra money to avoid the likes of TAP Sh*tlines.

          Amex are covered by S75, unless you paid on a Charge Card. Even then, if its as cut and dried as you’re suggesting I’m surprised they won’t do a charge back.

    If I book business class tickets for cash then the data points I’m also interested to know is how much of a premium the business class fare is in comparison to the economy fare and what is the potential value of the miles earned by booking in business and does that also justify some of the pricing difference versus economy.

    Might be useful to include in future articles if other readers think the same?

      I think these deals preach to the converted to be honest. After all a small number of Star miles is next to useless (no airline has EU deals like BA has) so they are only of use to someone confident of getting 100k for a long haul premium redemption. Similarly the status miles are of more use if you are already approaching Star Gold.

      Because this deal covers basically a full year, comparisons with cash Economy fares make little sense as you are covering both peak and off peak periods.

      I have booked TAP twice and both times didn’t get to my destination and they tried their best to scam me out of refunding. If you’re prepared to lose your money and get stressed hours before your flight, join the long list of people who got scammed by them 🌝

    I see as little a £1188, with a 30 hour layover in OPO (maybe LIS possible too). Perhaps because no APD?

    I did DUB-LIS-SFO and got a very good one-way fare in Business. The LIS-SFO flight was nice and on a new A330neo.

    But I had to stay overnight at LIS (2 hotels walkable from the terminal). And I had to get to DUB on a separate ticket.

    So a lot of faff to save money. And LIS is not a great airport – a lot of use of remote stands.

    I got to use the Star Alliance miles on United.

    I’m not keen on LIS. As noted above, *lots* of use of bus gates. The terminal is way too small for the volume it carries, and can have long queues for the stuff like ladies toilets, and see below re exit controls. I’ve waited a fair while to get through security there too, although they are at least sensible and un-MAN-like in that once you’re at it, you seem to mostly get through without lots of idiocy around secondary & bickering about what’s permitted.

    The ANA (PP, and most airlines – but not TAP who have their own) lounge is pretty decent – showers, sleep pods, nice toilets, decent food and drink.

    However, the *big* problem with LIS is non-Schengen flights which leave from after exit passport control. This is normal for Schengen countries of course, but there is NO warning to naive travellers:

    A – that there is exit passport control between the lounges/retail/food outlets & the gates.
    B – that exit passport control is slow and inefficient with very long lines.

    Based on multiple experiences this year, you need to leave AT LEAST 20 minutes to queue for this, and another 15 minutes for walking/pushing through crowds/getting around long queues at gates enroute.

    Both I and colleagues have had stressful waits in this queue, punctuated by crying/distraught people trying to push to the front and variously succeeding, or being harshly refused by airport staff.

    The root cause seems to be the egates/passport readers not working properly, sending a lot of people to the manned booths.

    There is some retail after the passport control, and toilets (much quieter down the far end – I’ve seen long queues for ones nearer the passport control), and TBH I’d recommend just going straight to the gate area rather than risking the passport queue. The lounge just makes for more stress because it’s the wrong side of the queue.

    If you do use the offer and need a hotel, don’t be afraid to get one a distance from the airport. Use the Bolt app – not Uber or taxis – very quick, cheap, and reliable (unlike Uber and taxis).
