Qatar Airways opens a lot of additional Avios reward availability

Reports on a number of US frequent flyer sites suggest that Qatar Airways has opened up a lot of additional seats for Avios redemption towards the end of the current booking window (October / November 2024).

These seats are booking at standard rates and not the ‘Q2’ ‘double points’ rates which are becoming increasingly prevalent.

Qatar Airways extra Avios availability

Given how many routes Qatar Airways operates it is difficult to independently verify this, especially as Qatar Airways also adjusts redemption availability by starting point. Someone booking from London – where cash fares are higher and so Avios seats are tighter – may not be shown a seat that someone starting in, say, Dublin would see.

That said, if you were thinking of a trip to Asia, Africa, the Middle East, India, Maldives etc for the second half of 2024 then you may want to take a fresh look.

In theory, Qatar Airways availability and pricing for Avios seats is the same at both ba.com and qatarairways.com. In reality this isn’t always the case so it is worth checking both sites.

This article explains how to link your British Airways and Qatar Airways Avios accounts.

Any got any experience of The Willard in DC and treatment of elites?

Mrs MacK has a suite night award in mid-December, but only points left for one night! Was thinking about buying points for her (rather than using mine) for three more nights to get the suite night for the whole trip.

But will she get a decent suite?

(to be frank, for sleep we are usually quite happy with a Premier Inn – a good bed, a good shower and blackout curtains! But we do like a nice breakfast.)

    • Aston100 says:

Isn’t the weak point that you can’t attempt the suite upgrade until 2 weeks before your check in date? At which point there’s no guarantee of a suite being available?

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

Yep! Mind you, we are only a few days away from the 14-day deadline and loads of “ suites” available online.

    • DanATC says:

We really enjoyed a long weekend at The Willard back in May, I’m a Diamond Ambassador IHG member.

Booked the cheapest room available on points and we were upgraded to a very large Junior Suite which I was very happy with. Diamond breakfast is a credit against the a-la-carte menu in the hotel’s Café du Parc, it’s a small space so show up early or reserve a table in advance. A relatively limited menu but decent quality and lovely service, I’d take it over an average buffet any day.

The hotel is beautiful with a real sense of history about it, and the location is unbeatable.

    • Anna says:

It was fabulous last Christmas, we loved it. We used the Ambassador cert to book a 1 bedroom suite (which was massive), and booked a 3rd night on points and they let us keep the suite for the 3rd night. So 3 nights in the suite for a cash outlay of about $700.
We got a very nice bottle of red wine, macaroons and a chocolate model of the Washington monument as our welcome gift and as mentioned the credit which comfortably covered breakfast in the restaurant. Definitely going to go at Xmas again in the future.

      • Anna says:

I requested the 1 bedroom suite with sofa bed in the living room as they don’t all have one and there were 3 of us. Living room was massive with separate sitting, dining and study areas!

        • Colin MacKinnon says:

          Points purchase made!

Sine the Suite Night award expires end of Dec, May as well use it. And my points will book somewhere else.

Post ambassador plat, and Creation for earning, we need to concentrate IHG stays in one account.

  • Peggerz says:

I have been checking on-and-off for a couple of months now and there was never a chance of getting any Avios availability on QR, they just didn’t open up. That was until I saw the post from @fasul the other day. Yesterday I picked up EDI-DOH-ICN rtn for next year and it seemed to be wide open. And the price is the same as 2 years ago both in Avios and taxes/charges/etc.

  • Dave says:

Thanks Rhys and team… Sydney flights I have been waiting for booked… Had to go from Manchester but can’t win them all!

  • David says:

I’ve managed to book a QR redemption in J today for this time next year from LHR, out to BNE and back from SYD – thanks to everyone at HfP!

  • Mark says:

I know this has been asked before but is there anyway to book the Qatar flights direct with Qatar with your household Avios balance or only what’s in personal?

    • Ladyshopper says:

You can only book with your personal Avios balance. I just had this problem. As we were doing open jaw flights, I ended up booking one set of flights direct through Qatar, as had enough personal Avios for that, then the other flights I booked through BA using our household balance.

Thanks to @fasul for mentioning this on the forum the other day. I’d all but given up hope of getting any flights to Aus/NZ with Qatar as every day I looked it was all at double the amount. Am really chuffed that we managed to get some, is pretty much a dream trip for us and one we’ve wanted to do for a while.

  • Victairinternational says:

Great find. Rebooked my Tokyo flights from Finnair to Qatar – got 30k Avios back. Interestingly the taxes from NRT-DOH-BHX were £50 on BA.com and JPY equivalent to £160 on Qatar for the same J class flights

  • Ianmcdowall says:

I managed to bag DUB-AKL-DUB for my wife in business this morning.

  • Simon says:

I’ve been looking at flights from Tokyo to London and managed to get one with Qatar yesterday using AA miles. Odd thing was neither the BA or AA website listed the flight but it appear if I used the American Airlines app,
