NEW: Earn Avios at Heathrow’s World Duty Free, with 250 bonus Avios on your first purchase

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The World Duty Free shops at Heathrow have launched a new partnership with Avios.

You will now earn 1 Avios for every £1 you spend in World Duty Free and other shops at Heathrow run by the same parent company.

This is totally separate from the Heathrow Rewards loyalty scheme – which also earns Avios – and it appears that you can double up by earning in both programmes!

Even better, you will receive 250 bonus Avios with your first transaction.

How do I earn Avios at Heathrow duty free?

It’s a little bit fiddly. However, it is worth the effort as you will also save 5% on your purchases.

You need to download the ‘Red by Dufry‘ app to your smartphone and register.

You might not know the name Dufry, but it is the dominant global duty free retailer.  As well as owning World Duty Free in the UK, it also owns – in various corners of the world – Dufry, Nuance, Hellenic Duty Free, Colombian Emerald, Duty Free Uruguay, Hudson and Duty Free Shop Argentina.

Dufry has its own app-based loyalty programme called Red By Dufry.  The key benefit of downloading this app is that you get a 5% discount on purchases at selected Dufry storesYou can join here. There is also a link with DragonPass (the airport lounge access card) which is very interesting.

What do I save?

At Heathrow, the discount for Silver level members – which is what you get when you sign up – is 5%.  Tobacco purchases are excluded, as are airport arrivals stores.

You receive the discount by scanning the QR code in the app at the till.

This makes it a no-brainer to sign up if you ever make purchases at World Duty Free stores in UK airports or from other Dufry businesses abroad.

With $400 of spend you reach Gold level, where your discount rises to 7%.  At $1000 of spend, over a two year period, you reach Platinum.

At Heathrow, you will continue to receive Heathrow Rewards points on top of your Red discount.

  • Nigel says:

Love this, Id add you need to Link your account in RED to your BA account under ‘manager partners’

  • Jayesh Tailor says:

It’s up to 10% discount with Platinum

  • Will says:

Red by Dufry has always been super-glitchy. Would be interesting if they get the avios posting to work without swarms of complaints

    • BJ says:

      Here’s a starter for 10, why only Heathrow? 🙂

      • Irwin says:

And why then only Spain for the past 5+ years? Gives me another excuse not to buy at Newcastle after sampling the wares after making me go round in a circle, as all airports do: ‘Why’eye pet, but ams ganna bay this at Lundan, cos I cannot put 150ml in ma bag, lyke’. ‘Also they giz us more poynts now doon south’ lyke’.

  • Scottpat78 says:

    Thanks for this Rob.

I just completed this and I didn’t have to enter my BAEC account number – it took me to a screen where I logged into BA (with 2FA) and I linked that way.

  • Will says:

Seems to be a recently updated app and looks much better. Have linked, see how it goes. No mention of the 250 bonus though

    • Will says:

The avios page has appeared on my Red offers with the 250 bonus mentioned. Seems there is also the choice of BA or Iberia linking

      • Joseph says:

Iberia option has been around for a while with red/dufry. Its linked to if you are shopping Spain only I believe.

        • Rob says:

Yes, launched a few years ago. With IB you can also earn by flashing your membership card – no need to register with RED.

        • Guernsey Globetrotter says:

In the app it says you earn at LHR and Spanish locations. ‘Barcelona, Madrid and more airports in Spain’ is the specific wording. In the linked T&Cs there is then quite a long and detailed list of Spanish locations, detailing both the airport and shops included.

  • Will says:

Note there is a £30 revolut offer on Red by Dufry app also. Anyone know if this is as good as available via other channels??

  • Gordon says:

I’ve often experienced better prices in duty free elsewhere in Europe, I will compare prices to SXF in a few days.

    • Paul says:

No question, shopping at rip off Heathrow is poor value compared to almost anywhere in Europe, even with such a dreadful exchange rate.
I got a deal some years ago (I think via advice on here) for platinum membership and it seems that so long as you make a purchase once a year you keep it!

The question is, is the sign up bonus higher with IB than BA or can to do both?

      • Irwin says:

I disagree. Check out the price of Tom Ford or Dior perfumes around European airports and it is always significantly less expensive at LHR. And that’s before the 10% discount, Heathrow Rewards and presuming nil FX cost.

  • Volker says:

I have been using Red by Dufry in different countries since it was first mentioned on HfP. Only once, the app didn’t seem to work, but staff at GLA were happy to still give me the Platinum 10% discount.
    Relevant to frequent/heavy spenders:
“Customers will collect 1 Avios per £1 /€1 spent when purchasing eligible goods at participating stores. A maximum of 3,000 Avios can be collected per transaction and a maximum number of 2 eligible transactions per day and 30 per month applies.”
