NEW: Earn Avios at Heathrow’s World Duty Free, with 250 bonus Avios on your first purchase

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

The World Duty Free shops at Heathrow have launched a new partnership with Avios.

You will now earn 1 Avios for every £1 you spend in World Duty Free and other shops at Heathrow run by the same parent company.

This is totally separate from the Heathrow Rewards loyalty scheme – which also earns Avios – and it appears that you can double up by earning in both programmes!

Even better, you will receive 250 bonus Avios with your first transaction.

How do I earn Avios at Heathrow duty free?

It’s a little bit fiddly. However, it is worth the effort as you will also save 5% on your purchases.

You need to download the ‘Red by Dufry‘ app to your smartphone and register.

You might not know the name Dufry, but it is the dominant global duty free retailer.  As well as owning World Duty Free in the UK, it also owns – in various corners of the world – Dufry, Nuance, Hellenic Duty Free, Colombian Emerald, Duty Free Uruguay, Hudson and Duty Free Shop Argentina.

Dufry has its own app-based loyalty programme called Red By Dufry.  The key benefit of downloading this app is that you get a 5% discount on purchases at selected Dufry storesYou can join here. There is also a link with DragonPass (the airport lounge access card) which is very interesting.

What do I save?

At Heathrow, the discount for Silver level members – which is what you get when you sign up – is 5%.  Tobacco purchases are excluded, as are airport arrivals stores.

You receive the discount by scanning the QR code in the app at the till.

This makes it a no-brainer to sign up if you ever make purchases at World Duty Free stores in UK airports or from other Dufry businesses abroad.

With $400 of spend you reach Gold level, where your discount rises to 7%.  At $1000 of spend, over a two year period, you reach Platinum.

At Heathrow, you will continue to receive Heathrow Rewards points on top of your Red discount.

  • A says:

Ordering at world duty-free online and collecting gets you 10% off. Does the 5% from Red stack with the 10% for ordering in advance?

  • M says:

is that $28 on the door at a dragon pass lounge ? what is the uk charge?

    • Rob says:

$28 globally. You book via the DragonPass app in advance (although 10 mins in advance is probably ok!).

  • Soloflyer1977 says:

I’m platinum and I am not sure how. I’ve made two very small duty free transactions over the last 12 months. However, the 10% discount is indeed very welcomed!

  • Chas says:

Just tried (and failed) to log into my Heathrow Rewards account – it seems that it gets deleted after 3 years of non activity. I need to set up a new one, and have the options to add both an existing members card member so that they get a reward, and a promo code.

@Rob / @Rhys – would one of you like to share your card number with me (via e-mail if you’d prefer) so you can get whatever reward is being offered?

Everyone else – any promo codes that you are aware of?

  • Angela Shelton says:

Signed up via your link but BA is not coming up as a partner so can’t add my exec no? Only offering Waffer or MC account as partners. Any ideas

    • Rob says:

I suspect you need a UK domiciled Dufry account due to the terms of their IAG deal.

    • Pierce says:

I had the same issue initially – solved by updating the app.

    • Nick Burch says:

Make sure you’ve updated to the latest version of the App, and don’t already have Iberia linked. You need the new “white” version of the app (colour-scheme wise), the older “red” one we’ve had a for a few years don’t have the right partner linking page

    • Cuchlainn says:

Possibly using your mobile phone app ? I had same with only Waffer and MC ( ? ) options but tried Red account on iPad and “forced” location as LHR and had choice of BAEC and Iberia – linked both and set IB as preferred ( ACE ) airline choice.

  • Mikeact says:

10% has been useful in Spain, but Heathrow? Recent example….so called duty free, Bombay Gin £21+ compared to BA Highlife, £12.59, and delivered to seat.

  • Jack says:

Does the 250 avios bonus still apply if you already hold a Dufry account and have made purchases already or is it only for new sign ups

    • Rob says:

People like me who already had the app still saw the 250 Avios offer, so it looks like everyone.

  • Peggerz says:

I have a number of Dufry points. What can I do with them?
