How to pre-order your meal on Virgin Atlantic flights using Pre-Select

I only recently found out that it is possible to pre-book your meal when flying Virgin Atlantic.

And no, I don’t mean the usual dietary / special meals that you can order when you log into Manage My Booking – I mean a full, proper menu, with the same dishes (and more) that you find on board.

The only reason I found out was because it was mentioned in the menu on my return flight from Shanghai on Virgin Atlantic recently. So, I thought I’d give it a try the following week on my next Virgin Atlantic flight!

What is the benefit of pre-ordering your meal?

Assuming you don’t mind losing a bit of the spontaneity and surprise of choosing on board, pre-ordering your main course lets you choose from a much wider range of options.

In my case, on a flight from London Heathrow to Male in the Maldives (my coverage of that trip will appear next week) I had a choice of ten different main courses. This is a huge increase from the usual three offered on board.

Which flights are eligible for meal pre-ordering?

Anyone flying in Upper Class, Premium or Economy Delight can pre-order their meal in advance. It is available between seven days and 24 hours in advance.

Virgin Atlantic makes it clear that the service is available on all flights departing from London Heathrow as well as all inbound flights returning to London from the US and Caribbean.

It is NOT available when returning from other destinations including Asia, Africa and the Middle East, which included my return flight from Male.

How do I pre-select my meal on Virgin Atlantic?

Annoyingly, it’s not quite as simple as it ought to be.

You won’t find it in Manage My Booking together with the option to pre-order special, dietary meals. That would make far too much sense! No, you need to head to this special mini-site and re-enter your booking reference and name.

Once you’re in you’ll be able to pre-select meals for all the passengers on the booking individually.

What are your options with Virgin Atlantic pre-select?

Here is what I was offered when I logged in for my flight to the Maldives.

As you can see, there are a large number of options – ten in total. The last three are ‘exclusive’ to pre-select and would not otherwise be available on my flight.

Here are the choices I was given in Upper Class:

  • Herb roasted chicken breast with fondant potatoes, broccolini, wild mushrooms and madeira sauce
  • Roasted trout fillet with jasmine rice, pickled radish and carrot, charred bok choy, coriander cress and a light Thai green sauce
  • Spinach and ricotta tortellini with sage butter sauce, grilled baby courgettes and artichoke topped with a parsley panko crumb (vegetarian)
  • Sweet and sour pork with jasmine rice, crispy onions and bok choy
  • Chicken achari with cabbage and carrot thoran, basmati rice and paratha
  • Cauliflower sweet potato and chickpea curry with pea pilau, mushroom garlic palak and naan bread (vegan)
  • Spiced apple and parsnip soup with a gouda cheese and chilli jam toastie (vegetarian, Express Meal)
  • Herb crusted North Atlantic cod fillet with a lemon caper butter, new potatoes and broccolini
  • Roasted pork belly with cauliflower and truffle purrée, boulangère potatoes, baby carrots, wilted kale and a cider sauce
  • Panko coated tofu with katsu vegetable curry, jasmine rice and pickled ginger (vegetarian)

Three of the dishes are vegetarian whilst one is vegan. You can also pre-order an Express meal which is served within an hour of take-off, usually as a one-tray service.

You can also, if you choose to, skip your main meal. I’m not sure what this means in practice: can you still change your mind on board or has Virgin Atlantic literally not loaded a meal for you?

Pre-select only applies to the main course. You’ll still be able to choose a starter from the menu on board, as well as a dessert.

Given the wide range of cuisines available, what I suspect happens here is that – apart from three ‘online exclusive’ options – you are offered the full range of meals that Virgin Atlantic is offering across its network on any particular day. Main courses offered on-board on your particular flight are usually tailored to the destination country.

You can pre-select your meal on the Virgin Atlantic website here.

I know this is about virgin but I tried to pre select my finnair meals and as I am a passenger who is known by OW to order special meal of lacto ovo veg since they don’t give an option of pescatarian then a warning came up that the route doesn’t have more than one option for the second meal in my case the breakfast so I am stuck with using the special even though I always have a feeling special meals are probably made inferior.

Does anyone have any experience with actually asking for a different meal once onboard?

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

One World does not know anything about your meals. Individual airlines do.

As to ordering a special and trying to change it on board then it’s possible to ask but you’ll be at the back of the queue for the normal meals as for every special meal that’s ordered the number of non special meals is reduced.

      • Novice says:

Ok I think the booking put me down automatically as veg because I booked through ba.com on avios reward so I probably worded it wrong.

    • mark says:

On my last Virgin flight (3 weeks ago) another passenger was told that their pre selected meal had been missed, dropped, lost…whatever. The crew then mentioned that they had a number of “spare” alternatives onboard and what would the customer like.

  • Sarah says:

What happened to the BA pre-order trial? It seemed like it never actually started – although maybe it has as the web page for it is still live. I’m not sure why a trial was needed when this is something that BA used to offer in the past, but any news on what is happening with it would be appreciated

  • Peter says:

    Hi Rhys
I have read somewhere that VA are supposed to send an email to Upper Class passengers 48 hours in advance of travel, inviting them to pre-order their main course, but in practice this does not seem to happen. Their advertising states that the scheme should be a “win/win” as the passenger gets the meal they want and VA avoids wastage, so it is surprising that they keep it a secret!
As other people have said Upper Class catering is very poor and perhaps a good reason to consider a BA alternative where an option.
The Upper Class Wing at LHR is great
    The Heathrow Clubhouse is great
    The modern fleet is great
The old UC suite is now very dated and VA needs to change their caterers or they will loose more premium passengers

    • daveinitalia says:

Nice to know what Virgin Australia do, but this is about VS 😁

    • mradey says:

I received an email 7 days before my flight and a reminder email 3 days before the flight (UC, Gold). Same for the return leg.

    • John says:

I’d argue just based on real world availability that BA’s delivery is so far from their marketing this is another reason to choose VS…
The meals themselves are pretty comparable now BA has finally upped it’s game a little.

    • mark says:

Peter, I posted the meal ordering link earlier.

  • ankomonkey says:

The image used on the dish selections looks like a toilet with the lid at a 45 degree angle!

And am I the only one who can’t bear ‘crispy onions’? They seem to appear on – and totally ruin – a lot of sushi nowadays.

    • Rhys says:

I thought that too! Love crispy onions though 😉

    • flyforfun says:

It’s very annoying this fad for crispy onions. I used to be able to get plain, dried onions in the supermarket, but all I can find now is the crispy variety. They are fried and heavy in oil and don’t suit the recipes I make. I can get them online, but I’m always dubious of buying food online.

      • camille55 says:

Ha! Had precisely this issue a few weeks ago. Eventually found some dried onions in one of the larger Indian shops in Rayners Lane. Haven’t bought online, but I suspect the brands are the same as in the shops.

  • jjoohhnn says:

“Assuming you don’t mind losing a bit of the spontaneity and surprise of choosing on board”

I guess there’s still the option of ‘surprise, we didn’t load your pre-ordered meal’!

  • HampshireHog says:

Good luck to all who try this…. Earlier in the year I received the email for an upper class flight to Cape Town, pre ordered my pie and once aboard sat back with a glass of bubbly and waited….and waited and waited. The pre orders were served AFTER everyone else who’d waited till aboard. My meal was then eventually plonked down in front of me and…..wasn’t a pie! No apology no explanation of what the unidentifable mush was. Queried the dish and was met with a shrug, that’ s whats been loaded and now no pies remaining. Asked for the CSM who was apologetic but it was what it was. Hopeless.

  • Ann says:

I only had the same options as on board in PE earlier this month.
Plus it didn’t work as they did not serve our meals as ordered, luckily we were served first so had our choice.

  • A says:

The menus on my last six or so (a couple a year) LHR-JFK early evening sectors in premium have been awful…unless you like chicken (I don’t), or curry (which I don’t).
No pasta dish on the menu. No beef. No veggie dish. Initially I thought they had loaded the wrong menu and it was one for a flight headed to india, but it’s been consistently terrible.
I just don’t bother now and make sure I eat in the centurion lounge to fill up.
