Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

It’s not ‘worthless’ because TP earned in that period count towards your 1 April 2024 to 31st March 2025 year, driving your status to April 2026.

Obviously if you are concerned about status in the year to 30 April 2027 then you’ll be earning those TP from 1 April 2025 onwards.

Thanks for replying Rob, have i understood this correctly? If i have already retained my status by feb 8th 2025 then this will be in effect until 1st April 26? Therefore it does appear that earning tier points from Feb 8th – 30th March is redundant and i should postpone my planned flights until early April as these will then count for status for 2026-27?

  • Joe says:

I think the complexity of this is being exaggerated. You have 2 TP earning windows. Earn the status you want in both of them. One is April 2025-12 months. The other is your current end date-12 months. Ta dah!

Clearly BA’s comms suck. A diagram/simple slider interface could have helped. But it’s really not that hard. Thanks for the super simple article. I’m surprised why this still generates pages of comments. I suppose this is what it’s like running a consumer facing company…..

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Because most people simply didn’t understand the existing system in the first place (it has some intricacies but the basics are simple) and then didn’t properly read the info BA put out.

BA even had sections for every month of the year saying this is what happens to you. That was there from the get go not released days later.

Sure the wording could have been a little better but you can say that about anything, People queried this article!

Diagrams would have been nice but not essential but even then some would have complained.

      • Rob says:

Not true. Original wording implied that anyone with status beyond 1/4/25 would have it shortened. It also implied that anyone earning status after 1/4/24 got it to 1/4/26.

      • Rhys says:

Go take a look at the FlyerTalk thread. These are people who live and breathe BAEC, so you can’t say they don’t understand the existing system.

The reality is that it was communicated in a really, really poor way.

  • Paul C says:

I’m an Aug end.. in June I will get silver in one trip. Am I reading it right I will have it until April 2026? Thx

    • Rhys says:

No. You will have it until 30th September 2025, as per the old system.

    • Pete says:

Depending upon your view of rules, your history with BA, and information you have given them, one trip in June can get you silver until April 2026. I have three BA accounts due to the Avios closures – all with the same information. I have only ever used one of them, but these things can and do go under the radar. Last chance mind!

  • Andy says:

Clarifying question, if someone can help please? My TP year ends April 8 2024. I am a Silver member and currently have 500 TP. I have a few trips scheduled between now and April 8, the last one of which just takes me over the 600 TP line on April 4th. So I will have ‘earned/renewed’ my Silver membership on April 4th 2024, between the April 1st- April 8th window. Can someone tell me, would then my Silver membership be renewed until April 2025 or April 2026? Thank you

    • Hilda M says:

April 2025 (card valid until 31 May 2025) Your only “benefit” is those few points earned 1-8 April this year also give you a small start for your next year of earning

  • NRM says:

I’m January 25. So if I maintain TP it will renew to Feb 26. Fine. But what if the aggregate of April 24 to 8 Jan 25 + points from 9 Jan to April are not enough? I lose status in Feb 26? What if I earn enough from April 25 to march 26?

I’m GGL and in one month this year have 800TP which will not be carried over. Does this mean Jan-march 25 I have to earn another 800 TP?

    • Rhys says:

Tier points in April 24 – March 25 will only earn you status to April 26.

  • Trevor says:

The cynic in me says BA decided not to give adequate advance notice of these changes to avoid customers having time to tweak their travel plans around the changes.

eg my reading of this – A customer with a May 8th 24 end date – earn 600 TP’s between 1st April 24 and May 8th 24 – you now have silver status to end of April 2026 with the carry over “transition period”. This customer now has time to use avios for all travel from May 9th 24 to 31st March 25 and not worry about revenue bookings and TP collection until the new collecting period starts on 1st April 2025.

By giving little to no notice of the changes BA are relying on customers having a plan that is hard to change at such short notice to gain leverage in the new system.

  • Angus says:

Are tier points earned in the shortened collection period lost from the subsequent year? Ie is the timing of your travel plans important in managing this change?

My year end is 8 Jan 25.
I tend to do one long haul CW trip and a couple of short CE trips each year. This year I gain 480TP in March 24 then 80 in May and 80 in Sept. That will renew me at silver to Feb 26.
In 2025, I will earn 360TP in Feb then three 80 TP trips in the summer. That would previously be enough to regain silver to Feb 27 but if the Feb 360 TPs get dropped on 31 Mar 25, the end of the temporary short earning period, then do I need to buy an additional 360TP trip once into the new full year to avoid demotion in Mar 26? Or alternatively fit in an 80 TP trip within the ten month pre short period that gets re-credited.

    • Charlie says:

Your 480TP in March 2024, 80TP in May 2024 and 80TP in September 2024 will maintain silver status until 28th February 2025. The 80TP in May 2024, 80TP in September 2024, plus the 360TP in February 2025 will renew silver status to 30th April 2026. However, by my reckoning, on the current system, you would have dropped to bronze on 1st March 2025 with the 360TP gained in February 2025,, and it would not be until the 3x 80TP in the summer of 2025 that you would have then gone back up to silver, which would have been valid until February 2027. The 360TP in February 2025 will maintain your status until April 2026 under the new system, and then the 3x 80 TP in summer 2025 means you’ll need a further 360TP to keep until April 2027 – however your silver status will be continuous, so you are not losing as much as at first seems in your case.

  • Jay says:

My current year end is March 8, 2024, already re-qualified to Gold. In mid-March, I will get 440TP. From April 2024 until March 8th 2025, I will get 4680TP, total of 5120 TP which qualifies for GGL until March 31st, 2026. From April 1st 2025 I need 3000 TP to re-qualify for GGL benefit level from April 2026 to March 2027.
    Presuming I understood it correctly.
