Avios Group acquires British Airways Holidays from the airline

In a slightly unexpected move, British Airways has lost direct control of British Airways Holidays.

Even more unexpectedly, the new owner is IAG Loyalty.

The BA Holidays team will now report into Adam Daniels who runs Avios. It’s not clear if management will be joining Adam in their funky new WeWork space next to Victoria Station.

Of course, IAG Loyalty is 86% owned by British Airways (and 14% by Iberia) so the impact on how money flows through the IAG corporate structure – which is of great interest to the providers of IAG loans and those who rely on the BA pension fund – is not huge.

We could speculate all day about why this was done. The airline is – as a ‘safety first’ business should be – far more slow moving than IAG Loyalty. Perhaps BA Holidays, which is growing quickly, was felt to be a better fit for the IAG Loyalty culture? Perhaps it is to do with licensing / ATOL / ABTA / CAA requirements? Perhaps it is to allow BA Holidays to offer flights from other airlines?

It’s also not clear if BA Holidays was transferred for free or ‘bought’. Perhaps it is a tax efficient way of getting money out of IAG Loyalty? Whatever the reason, let’s see if BA Holidays can continue its stellar growth.
