Which Finnair long-haul routes have ultra-low taxes when using Avios?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Early last month, Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency. We covered the story here.

You CANNOT yet move Avios back and forth between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club, but this should be possible from late May / June.

This doesn’t stop you redeeming Avios for Finnair flights, of course.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

You have ALWAYS been able to redeem Avios for Finnair flights on ba.com because both airlines are members of the oneworld airline alliance.

What has changed is that BA and Finnair have agreed to charge exactly the same for Avios flights on Finnair. In many cases this has led to a decent reduction in the cost of flights.

Finnair is more useful than you might think. Helsinki is ‘on the way’ to Asia from much of Europe, meaning that a connection there is not a lot slower than flying direct. (It is slower than it was, however, due to the ban on using Russian airspace.)

Finnair has NO ‘carrier surcharges’ on many of its long haul flights. This makes them exceptionally good value if you want to avoid taxes and charges.

There are some exceptions. To North America, Finnair is part of the BA / AA / Iberia / Aer Lingus joint venture. To Japan, Finnair is part of the BA / Japan Airlines joint venture. Finnair is obliged to charge higher surcharges on these routes under the terms of the joint venture agreement. Surcharges are also higher to Shanghai, possibly due to the China Southern codeshare deal.

For other long haul routes, you’re laughing.

Finnair now has guaranteed award availability

Finnair now guarantees a minimum number of award seats for Avios redemption on each flight. This should make it significantly easier to redeem Avios on Finnair.

Finnair is offering:

  • 4-6 award seats on shorthaul European flights (two in Business where it exists, four in Economy)
  • 8 award seats on long haul flights (two in Business, two in Premium Economy and four in Economy)

These should be bookable via ba.com so there is no need to wait until you are able to transfer Avios into Finnair Plus.

What do Avios redemptions cost on Finnair?

Here is the new reward chart. Remember that the same chart applies whether you book on finnair.com or ba.com.

Note that there are no peak / off-peak prices.

These are one way prices from Helsinki. Connections are charged separately except for ‘Northern Europe’ – I discuss this below.

Where are the best redemption routes for low taxes?

Here is a list of Finnair long haul routes from Helsinki. Pricing is for Business Class, return, flights.

Finnair also flies to Doha from Stockholm and Copenhagen. Taxes are even lower than the number shown below, and getting to those cities should be cheaper than getting to Helsinki.

I have highlighted those where the taxes and charges are under £100 return.

Where are the biggest savings over direct British Airways flights?

Our list of Avios pricing by route when flying on British Airways from London is here.

Finnair business class seat

Here are the routes with the biggest overall Avios and cash savings compared with a PEAK British Airways Club World return flight from London:

Bangkok

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £59

Delhi

  • BA – 200,000 Avios + £450
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £55

Doha

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £72

Dubai

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £69

Hong Kong

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £77

Singapore

  • BA – 240,000 Avios + £600
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £79

British Airways does not fly to Nagoya, Osaka, Phuket or Seoul.

I cannot stress enough how good value Singapore is. Even if you have a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, you should save it for another trip and pay full Avios to go with Finnair.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

Of course, don’t forget ….

There are snags, of course:

  • you need to get to Helsinki, which will cost you in cash or Avios (BA has dropped it but Finnair flies from Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin, various low cost carriers also fly it)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on a separate ticket, you will need to build in a big gap to ensure you don’t miss your connection – but Finnair will through-check your luggage if both flights are with them (according to the comments below)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on the same ticket, you get protection from a missed connection but will also have to pay long-haul UK Air Passenger Duty
  • you can’t use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher or Barclays upgrade voucher on Finnair

Avios bookings made on the Finnair Plus website allow a free connection in ‘Northern Europe’. This is defined as Bodø, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Trondheim, Vilnius, Visby, Warsaw and all flights within Finland.

This would allow you to book, say, Copenhagen to Helsinki to Singapore for the same cost as Helsinki to Singapore. This will benefit some people as Helsinki is a longer and pricier flight from the UK than many cities on the list above. You can’t book this until transfers into Finnair Plus are allowed – you won’t get a free connection if you book at ba.com.

What’s the new Finnair Business Class seat like?

The new Finnair ‘no recline’ seat is now on virtually all routes. I won’t go into it again but you can read my review here. Rhys is off to Nagoya soon to test it on a long haul route. Image above.

Conclusion

Finnair offers exceptional value for a solo traveller or a couple without a BA Amex voucher on long haul business class flights to much of Asia, the Middle East and Delhi.

You have to factor in a transfer in Helsinki, but it’s a great city for a 24 hour stopover (if you want one, image above), the redeveloped airport is lovely and the lounges in the non-Schengen area are excellent – if you are British Airways Gold you can visit the Platinum Wing which we reviewed here, and have a sauna whilst you wait.

  • meta says:

Unlike BA or Iberia, Finnair will check through your bags even when on separate tickets.

    • Harry T says:

      Nice.

    • TGLoyalty says:

Wow that is a game changer tbh if you leave a decent sized transit time.

    • Red Flyer says:

Is this confirmed? I recently had to book LHR-HEL-IVL with a 5 hour connection wait, as I was strongly dissuaded from booking the 2 available separate bookings and a 1 hour connection, by the agent who said that my bags would definitely not be checked through.

  • BJ says:

Worth pointing out that Finnair also fly to/from Dublin.

One snag is that if you pay up for the APD and fly from UK on one ticket many UK to Azja connection times in HEL are tight. While HEL is a great airport to change the security screen can sometimes be slow, and the tight connections mean that even small delays at flight origin can cause havoc with overall journey. Furthermore, HEL is a small hub so there is not going to be so many rerouting options if things do go wrong. For these reasons I changed our next flight from EDI-BKK with a 45 minute connection to QR with a 1h 50min connection in DOH resulting in a linger journey time overall. There is not foubt Finnair offers fantastic value from both UK and even more from Finnair Plus zone 1 (hopefully soon) but if tight connections or positioning flights are involved then a shot break in Helsinki or elsewhere in zone 1 once transfer avios is possible is probably the best way to go.

Other things worth mentioning is that Finnair operate A350s on some rotations from AMS and BRU, not just LHR. Longhaul seat selection is no longer free on Finnair but if I understood recent comments properly this might be possible for middle pairs via RJ MMB.

    • Vit says:

Thanks BJ. How easy to find availability on AY based on your experience? As we are now a family of 3. We had no issue finding QR availability for our day end of this year and early next year and that’s make this AY option even more appealing now that amex 241 is not really working for us.

Anyway, have a good time in Thailand. Pre pandemic, we always went back about this time of year. Cheaper flight ticket and hotel as well as plenty of local fruits as well compared to winter time.

      • BJ says:

AY availability always seemed unpredictable to me. My best result were always about 3-4 months in advance. However, there is now the benefit of a guaranteed 2 J seats. Searches on BA HEL-BKK- HEL should give you an idea if they are releasing only 2, or more. Downside is that with the avios pricing, lack of surcharges and combine my avios therevis going to be a big increase in demand for the award seats. My guess is that things will get more difficult, not easier. This might be tempered a little by those from LHR catchment not wanting connections or being unwilling to detour far North.

Our avios stock is draining faster than replenishment so from 2026 we will be buying more tickets than redemption. Where possible we’ll use avios on A Y from CPH (AY Zone 1) as we have friends there.. otherwise it’ll mostly be revenue direct on Thai or EVA following short break in Scandinavia or elsewhere in Europe.

Hope you’re all well and travels go smoothly.

    • Harry T says:

Personally have found tight connections in HEL to be very manageable.

      • BJ says:

Agreed, I only ever missed one and they put me up overnight in LHR after rerouting me via London. My concern is nit so much the connection time but delays in departure at origin. I monitored this over a few weeks from EDI last year and guestimated that I was only certain of making the connection in just over half of the flights during that period. On the plus side the AY flight to DOH around 5pm last year now seems to be replaced or supplemented with an extra daily flight to BKk which helps a lot.

  • Hugo says:

Just managed to book on Qatar because you can book slightly earlier. Very strange as it was 77,250 avios for Helsinki to Tokyo but the taxes were only 17 euros so the price band is different for avios but no surcharges – very unusual. Works out about the same price if you value avios at 1p.

  • NorthernLass says:

This is very interesting, especially SIN – I am one of those who would be happy to stopover in Helsinki rather than LHR. We flew AGP-LHR on FinnAir recently and I was very impressed with the crew – mature, competent, professional and good-humoured.

Looking at MAN-HEL on ba.com though, redemption prices seem high, starting at 12k avios plus £49 one-way. Will they be any cheaper via Finnair? I haven’t checked cash prices but recall them being very high, even pre-pandemic.

    • NorthernLass says:

Having said that, a Quick Look on SkyScanner shows MAN-HEL from £101 one way on Finnair which is obviously better value. I haven’t checked whether that includes checked baggage etc.

      • NorthernLass says:

I don’t know why Quick Look keeps reverting to capital letters 😂

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

AY lite fares include no checked baggage.

But there is an allowance if you have OW status.

@Rob – might be worth an article on this.

    • BJ says:

No, even if booking via AY+ it’ll still be 12K and 24k + tax one way in Y and J.

That fare you saw is good, most of the time EDI-HEL is closer to £200 than £100.

      • NorthernLass says:

I had a look on the Finnair website and got a quote for November for £131 which included 1 x 23kg plus 2 cabin bags which sounded reasonable. There’s no point in saving by departing HEL if you then have to pay a fortune to get to HEL!

        • BJ says:

Agreed, however, we have friends in Copenhagen, we do want to take some breaks in Scandinavia, and we travel HBO do zone 1 redemotions via AY+ eill work a treat for us personally. Otherwise I’d just be booking from UK, APD and all.

  • Tariq says:

Presumably open jaw is also allowed? Curious about outbound to Hong Kong and inbound from Tokyo… I think even with the increased TFC due to the Tokyo leg, it will still be a few hundred pounds cheaper than BA with a 241.

    • BJ says:

Why not just book 2x ow instead of messing about on the phone with open jaw? Surely the extra flexibility is worth the potential extra £35pp amendment fee?

      • NorthernLass says:

This. I’m eyeing up the following route:
MAN-HEL-SIN then SIN-MLE, ending with MLE-DOH-MAN (or MLE-LHR-MAN) with a mix and match of airlines.

        • BJ says:

Not sure SIN is worth that much trouble to visit. If you plan to buy any avios to facilitate this then it might be worth exploring opportunities via Alaska MP instead, there’s a sale on at the moment.

        • Mike says:

Why not fly direct to Singapore from MAN?

  • Amo says:

Rhys I hope you manage to spend a day or two in Nagoya as part of your review. It’s not the most touristy city but there’s great food and a few sights to see. Happy to share suggestions!

    • Danny says:

      Nagoya Chicken Wings!

Rhys will need a new passport soon with all the stamps in it 😂

  • Panda Mick says:

Geeky question, but is the routing due to closed Russian airspace still over the pole to Tokyo?

This was a fascinating read: https://www.finnair.com/sg-en/bluewings/world-of-finnair/flying-over-the-north-pole–well-planned-is-half-done–2557702

And knowing that the A350 is ETOPS300 is just stunning. 5 hours on one engine!

    • Vit says:

I believe so. Japanese colleagues working in Norway fly this route often and I think you get a “certificate” as well.

      • meta says:

Only on the inbound (Tokyo-Helsinki). It’s southern route Helsinki-Tokyo although they do maybe once per month.

    • Chris says:

We flew to Seoul last year and went over North Pole on way one but not on the way out. We did get the certificate.

  • Thomas Haslam says:

We just came back from an Easter holiday trip to Seoul with Finnair after HfP highlighted the new availability. We’re in North East London so positioned the night before from Stansted and stayed at the airport Hilton who will mind your bags during the day before you fly.

Good business lounge and good onboard product. Interestingly we flew south of Russia to Seoul and north of Russia on the way back.

    • G says:

Some over the pole routes depend on many factors but usually wind/weather, chinese airspace availability and cosmic radiation allowance for the crew.
