Which Finnair long-haul routes have ultra-low taxes when using Avios?

Early last month, Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency. We covered the story here.

You CANNOT yet move Avios back and forth between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club, but this should be possible from late May / June.

This doesn’t stop you redeeming Avios for Finnair flights, of course.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

You have ALWAYS been able to redeem Avios for Finnair flights on ba.com because both airlines are members of the oneworld airline alliance.

What has changed is that BA and Finnair have agreed to charge exactly the same for Avios flights on Finnair. In many cases this has led to a decent reduction in the cost of flights.

Finnair is more useful than you might think. Helsinki is ‘on the way’ to Asia from much of Europe, meaning that a connection there is not a lot slower than flying direct. (It is slower than it was, however, due to the ban on using Russian airspace.)

Finnair has NO ‘carrier surcharges’ on many of its long haul flights. This makes them exceptionally good value if you want to avoid taxes and charges.

There are some exceptions. To North America, Finnair is part of the BA / AA / Iberia / Aer Lingus joint venture. To Japan, Finnair is part of the BA / Japan Airlines joint venture. Finnair is obliged to charge higher surcharges on these routes under the terms of the joint venture agreement. Surcharges are also higher to Shanghai, possibly due to the China Southern codeshare deal.

For other long haul routes, you’re laughing.

Finnair now has guaranteed award availability

Finnair now guarantees a minimum number of award seats for Avios redemption on each flight. This should make it significantly easier to redeem Avios on Finnair.

Finnair is offering:

  • 4-6 award seats on shorthaul European flights (two in Business where it exists, four in Economy)
  • 8 award seats on long haul flights (two in Business, two in Premium Economy and four in Economy)

These should be bookable via ba.com so there is no need to wait until you are able to transfer Avios into Finnair Plus.

These are one way prices from Helsinki. Connections are charged separately except for ‘Northern Europe’ – I discuss this below.

Where are the best redemption routes for low taxes?

Here is a list of Finnair long haul routes from Helsinki. Pricing is for Business Class, return, flights.

Finnair also flies to Doha from Stockholm and Copenhagen. Taxes are even lower than the number shown below, and getting to those cities should be cheaper than getting to Helsinki.

I have highlighted those where the taxes and charges are under £100 return.

Here are the routes with the biggest overall Avios and cash savings compared with a PEAK British Airways Club World return flight from London:

Bangkok

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £59

Delhi

  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £55

Doha

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350

British Airways does not fly to Nagoya, Osaka, Phuket or Seoul.

I cannot stress enough how good value Singapore is. Even if you have a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, you should save it for another trip and pay full Avios to go with Finnair.

Of course, don’t forget ….

There are snags, of course:

  • you need to get to Helsinki, which will cost you in cash or Avios (BA has dropped it but Finnair flies from Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin, various low cost carriers also fly it)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on a separate ticket, you will need to build in a big gap to ensure you don’t miss your connection – but Finnair will through-check your luggage if both flights are with them (according to the comments below)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on the same ticket, you get protection from a missed connection but will also have to pay long-haul UK Air Passenger Duty
  • you can’t use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher or Barclays upgrade voucher on Finnair

Avios bookings made on the Finnair Plus website allow a free connection in ‘Northern Europe’. This is defined as Bodø, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Trondheim, Vilnius, Visby, Warsaw and all flights within Finland.

This would allow you to book, say, Copenhagen to Helsinki to Singapore for the same cost as Helsinki to Singapore. This will benefit some people as Helsinki is a longer and pricier flight from the UK than many cities on the list above. You can’t book this until transfers into Finnair Plus are allowed – you won’t get a free connection if you book at ba.com.

Conclusion

Finnair offers exceptional value for a solo traveller or a couple without a BA Amex voucher on long haul business class flights to much of Asia, the Middle East and Delhi.

You have to factor in a transfer in Helsinki, but it’s a great city for a 24 hour stopover (if you want one, image above), the redeveloped airport is lovely and the lounges in the non-Schengen area are excellent – if you are British Airways Gold you can visit the Platinum Wing which we reviewed here, and have a sauna whilst you wait.

    The article doesn’t mention that Finnair also have A330s based at Copenhagen and Stockholm that fly daily to Doha with even lower taxes than Helsinki, 110k Avios + £39 and £50 respectively. Fewer Avios/cheaper £ required for the positioning flights too.

    Problem for many routes is Finnair only release 1 seat in Business. As the CPH, ARN and HEL flights to Doha all arrive at midnight, for groups >1, you could split up. Or some fly Qatar for 3x the tax.

    Off topic but in case some don’t know, Helsinki to Malaga return on Finnair is normally just over £500 return for (140x 2) = 280 Tier Points. Lisbon is more £. All flights on narrow body A320/321s but very good value for those trying to build status.

      These are the only remaining 140 intra EU flights that award 280 tier points now. Starting in Stockholm awards another 80 for an identical price too!

      They release at least two tickets in J now. It’s guaranteed by the programme like BA.

        Agree it is supposed to be guaranteed 2 but for the Doha flights there’s currently only 1 on all the dates I’m looking at in Expertflyer, which is replicated at ba.com, unless you have a workaround?

        And @G yes same price or cheaper OSL/ARN/GOT-HEL-AGP and return than a simple HEL-AGP return.

        😉 not Finnair-related, if you find a 640TP DUB-LHR-BOS/JFK-LAX/SFO fare >6 months away for £1500rtn, if you make last sector LHR-BCN/MAD instead of DUB it’s £200 cheaper. More complex versions of this (sometimes inc Helsinki) are possible….

      There are many detailed reviews on the web already including shorthaul and nonflight reviews on HfP. As a seat you’ll
      probably either love it or hate, no one review will mean any more than any other, it’s a personal thing. Personally I am fine with it as a seat but as a bed I consider it by far the best of any current generation business class seats I’ve flown.

        I think you’re being dramatic. I doubt many will hate it unless they have some particular medical issues that makes only certain positions comfortable.

          My partner does not like it as a seat (hate is too strong of a word) and he doesn’t have any medical issues. For both of us, as a bed it beats all airlines (incl. QSuite which I dislike in bed mode) apart from ANA’s The Room, especially if you can score row 1 which has wider legroom.

            I have not tried ANA but have enough Virgin points for the two of us so I’m hoping we’ll get lucky with availability sometime.

      I honestly think “non reclining” makes a bigger deal of it than it really is, and I’m not sure a review is going to help you much in determining if it’s for you. Having flown 2 sectors a few months ago I can’t imagine you’d find it so offensive as to regret trying it so give it a go. I actually think the finnair soft product is more problematic.

      I’ve just flown from Doha to Stockholm on the new seat and enjoyed it. I was very sceptical beforehand. The flight before this was from Perth to Doha on the Qatar A380. Give me the Finnair flight any day. Seat far more private and comfortable.

        Thanks for the pointers. I’m similar height to Rhys so interested to see his review. I’m struggling to see how it turns into a bed if it doesn’t recline. Worried it’ll be bad for my back if not fully flat. The ergonomics must be great if it’s beats Qatar A380. I’ll only know if I give it a go, sounds more promising now after hearing this feedback.

          It’s just a flat surface. There’s a flip-up piece that fills in the section between the seat and the foot area.

            One thing that needs to be said, is that you need to ask for extra cushions otherwise for some people it will not work well as a seat. They also have a special firmer cushion for back support now. My partner forgot to request on a recent flight, but it works really well if you have 3 or 4 cushions.

            It’s not a difficult concept – as long as the flat area is 6’4′ or whatever, the back of the seat doesn’t need to recline! There is a piece to fill the gap as Rhys says.

            Lack of reclining mechanism presumably means:
            – one thing less that can break
            – lighter weight so less fuel burn?

      The seat is not the most comfortable but as others have said extra cushions help. As a bed it’s very good, very private space.

    The table of Avios and cash requirement shows very clearly that the JV on the TATL and Japan routes are anti competitive and ripping people off! The toothless authorities who approved these deals and allow them to continue are not fit for purpose. Really need stronger regulation in this area

    Ex-EU fares can match or beat the SIN Avios rate on Finnair, if you fancy saving your Avios for elsewhere.

    I have just come back from SIN on AY and found the seat very good. You can move about in it to get different sitting positions and it is very spacious as a bed. Plenty of leg room makes it a great space.

    Two points though. Firstly, it could do with a bit more padding when used as a seat. The cushioning seems thin and when you move round to a new position it can be a bit uncomfortable. Secondly, if you are not mobile then getting into and out of it in bed mode is difficult, you need to wiggle your way in and out. I am older and had no particular problem but if you have problems with normal movement then it might be challenge.

    But I had eight hours sleep so perfectly okay.

      Agree the back padding is a weak point but if you ask they’ll provide extra cushions/pillows which means that with the space and shape of the seat you can get very comfortable.

    Would be interested to read more about redeeming Avios with other airlines via ba.com. Ba.com seems not always to show me options with Finnair. Do you always have to select Helsinki as a stopover?

      Where are you flying from, of from the regions then BA will not show flights operated by NORRA but you can cgeck for tgese via AY or AA then calling BA to book.

    On Singapore, I can’t get BA to find any direct flights Helsinki to Singapore in May, whilst the Finnair website shows their direct flight. As I need to book via BA to be able to use Avios, how is this going to work?!

      Availability should match exactly – and it did yesterday when I was researching this (I started on Finnair because it is quicker and then recreated same flight on BA).

        I’ve checked both wife and my BA accounts and can’t get any direct flights to show Helsinki to Singapore in May, for either cash or redemption booking. Finnair website is showing direct flights for cash (not checked award as don’t have Finnair account).

          BA won’t sell you a cash ticket on Finnair.

          You don’t think that trying to get a reward seat for a couple of weeks time, on a route where BA usually has zero reward seats for the next 11 months, is optimisic?

          If I look at mid to late March 2025 virtually every day is bookable.

            Ok, but I can’t get a redemption option to come up on BA website in the “Book with Avios” section. It says:
            Error
            There was a problem with your request, please try again later.

            Which is why I checked cash to see if it was just that direct flights were not showing at all. How do you find / book avios?

            Ok, I see. I think I assumed if there was no availability, it would at least go through to the screen and just show nothing available, rather than give me the error. Looking for economy then takes you through.

            No it’s not optimistic, many airlines offer seats and without a need to be awake at 1am 355 days before departure. I was able to get a seat at just 72 hrs notice from sparks to Sydney around 18 months ago.

        It does not match always. Finnair shows extra award availability. Also ba.com does not show any PE seats with AY.
