Which Finnair long-haul routes have ultra-low taxes when using Avios?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Early last month, Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency. We covered the story here.

You CANNOT yet move Avios back and forth between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club, but this should be possible from late May / June.

This doesn’t stop you redeeming Avios for Finnair flights, of course.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

You have ALWAYS been able to redeem Avios for Finnair flights on ba.com because both airlines are members of the oneworld airline alliance.

What has changed is that BA and Finnair have agreed to charge exactly the same for Avios flights on Finnair. In many cases this has led to a decent reduction in the cost of flights.

Finnair is more useful than you might think. Helsinki is ‘on the way’ to Asia from much of Europe, meaning that a connection there is not a lot slower than flying direct. (It is slower than it was, however, due to the ban on using Russian airspace.)

Finnair has NO ‘carrier surcharges’ on many of its long haul flights. This makes them exceptionally good value if you want to avoid taxes and charges.

There are some exceptions. To North America, Finnair is part of the BA / AA / Iberia / Aer Lingus joint venture. To Japan, Finnair is part of the BA / Japan Airlines joint venture. Finnair is obliged to charge higher surcharges on these routes under the terms of the joint venture agreement. Surcharges are also higher to Shanghai, possibly due to the China Southern codeshare deal.

For other long haul routes, you’re laughing.

Finnair now has guaranteed award availability

Finnair now guarantees a minimum number of award seats for Avios redemption on each flight. This should make it significantly easier to redeem Avios on Finnair.

Finnair is offering:

  • 4-6 award seats on shorthaul European flights (two in Business where it exists, four in Economy)
  • 8 award seats on long haul flights (two in Business, two in Premium Economy and four in Economy)

These should be bookable via ba.com so there is no need to wait until you are able to transfer Avios into Finnair Plus.

What do Avios redemptions cost on Finnair?

Here is the new reward chart. Remember that the same chart applies whether you book on finnair.com or ba.com.

Note that there are no peak / off-peak prices.

These are one way prices from Helsinki. Connections are charged separately except for ‘Northern Europe’ – I discuss this below.

Where are the best redemption routes for low taxes?

Here is a list of Finnair long haul routes from Helsinki. Pricing is for Business Class, return, flights.

Finnair also flies to Doha from Stockholm and Copenhagen. Taxes are even lower than the number shown below, and getting to those cities should be cheaper than getting to Helsinki.

I have highlighted those where the taxes and charges are under £100 return.

Where are the biggest savings over direct British Airways flights?

Our list of Avios pricing by route when flying on British Airways from London is here.

Finnair business class seat

Here are the routes with the biggest overall Avios and cash savings compared with a PEAK British Airways Club World return flight from London:

Bangkok

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £59

Delhi

  • BA – 200,000 Avios + £450
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £55

Doha

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £72

Dubai

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £69

Hong Kong

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £77

Singapore

  • BA – 240,000 Avios + £600
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £79

British Airways does not fly to Nagoya, Osaka, Phuket or Seoul.

I cannot stress enough how good value Singapore is. Even if you have a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, you should save it for another trip and pay full Avios to go with Finnair.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

Of course, don’t forget ….

There are snags, of course:

  • you need to get to Helsinki, which will cost you in cash or Avios (BA has dropped it but Finnair flies from Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin, various low cost carriers also fly it)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on a separate ticket, you will need to build in a big gap to ensure you don’t miss your connection – but Finnair will through-check your luggage if both flights are with them (according to the comments below)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on the same ticket, you get protection from a missed connection but will also have to pay long-haul UK Air Passenger Duty
  • you can’t use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher or Barclays upgrade voucher on Finnair

Avios bookings made on the Finnair Plus website allow a free connection in ‘Northern Europe’. This is defined as Bodø, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Trondheim, Vilnius, Visby, Warsaw and all flights within Finland.

This would allow you to book, say, Copenhagen to Helsinki to Singapore for the same cost as Helsinki to Singapore. This will benefit some people as Helsinki is a longer and pricier flight from the UK than many cities on the list above. You can’t book this until transfers into Finnair Plus are allowed – you won’t get a free connection if you book at ba.com.

What’s the new Finnair Business Class seat like?

The new Finnair ‘no recline’ seat is now on virtually all routes. I won’t go into it again but you can read my review here. Rhys is off to Nagoya soon to test it on a long haul route. Image above.

Conclusion

Finnair offers exceptional value for a solo traveller or a couple without a BA Amex voucher on long haul business class flights to much of Asia, the Middle East and Delhi.

You have to factor in a transfer in Helsinki, but it’s a great city for a 24 hour stopover (if you want one, image above), the redeveloped airport is lovely and the lounges in the non-Schengen area are excellent – if you are British Airways Gold you can visit the Platinum Wing which we reviewed here, and have a sauna whilst you wait.

  • Bob says:

So, if your dream is: Travel Asia in Business class. These Finnair fares are a game changer. From SIN, it’s cheap to fly to a lot of places. Personally, I only “need” Business for LON to Asia – not within Asia.

The fares mean that I no longer need to concern myself with AmEx / BA Companion Voucher nonsense. I can certainly spend £10K on card with some ease, so that gives me a voucher to use generally, and then I can always go to Finnair for my Asia trip(s).

All of a sudden, posh travel seems more in reach.

    • TGLoyalty says:

£15k soon before 50 people reply reminding you.

    • BJ says:

You can also get miles-earning business class revenue flights to many destinations in Asia comparable or lower than the avios-equivalent value of these redemptiobs assuming 1ppa.

    • Gordon says:

@Bob – If the £15k increased spend is something you were unaware of, you should get an email shortly, I received mine 10 mins ago, and with all the moaning and groaning, it looks like the changes are going ahead!

  • Bluekjp says:

A super article. Thank you. Rather than grrroan about the seats, the reindeer meat, the connections etc, I got straight on to Ba.com this morning and found business availability for a plum Friday night and returning on the following Sat night in March. I then called BA who answered in one ring and booked an open jaw HEL/SIN ///SIN/HEL/LHR. Adding the HEL/LHR on the back increased the tax by around £10 and the relevant extra avios. This allows you to connect onto the A350 to London an hour after arrival all on the one ticket, and so no worries if I have a missed connection. Total for 2 seats £179.40. Only need to buy a one way to Hel on the outbound.
Thanks again Rob and team for another incredibly useful article.

    • BJ says:

Odd comment on the seats. On the wjole I think the feedback on the seat has generally been very positive, … and reindeer is fantastic. There was no need to call BA, you could just have booked it as 2x ow.

      • Bluekjp says:

March 2025 is a long way off. I may need to cancel. Anything is possible. So I’d rather cancel 2@£35 rather than 4@£35. Also, if there’s an invol canx to the outbound delaying the trip I can make a change to the inbound foc, irrespective of avios availabilty, to maintain trip duration etc. This has happened to me before, and all of which is only possible if the journey is on one ticket. Elementary stuff IMO.

        • BJ says:

I get it. My own thimking on the matter though is that I prefer to be on the hook for the extra 2x £35 fees to provide the flecibility for voluntary changes after the outward leg has been flown. It’s both a good thing and a bad thing though as that flexibility both pre-and post-departure is a bit deductive to me, encouraging me to meddle with my reservations sometimes unnecessarily at extra cost. Given the flights look like they will be around the Easter vacation next year it was good that you got them locked in.

    • Martyn says:

What a ridiculous reply. Sensible, intelligent and constructive. what is wrong with you? This is a forum.

      • BJ says:

The comment seemed odd to me in that it implied (at least to me) that the OP was either concerned or uncerain about the seat and food but went ahead and booked anyway because the value and availability on a key date overrode such concerns. I think it odd that somebody would do this when it is evident from comments today and previous that there are alternative reward and revenue options that offer comparable or better value, and provide seats, food etc the OP might prefer. Ofcourse it is entirely possible I have misinterpreted to OPs comment. Whatever the case I did nit set out to ridicule the OP! The comment about booking 2x one way flights was entirely constructive because this provides both greater flexibility and protectionvthan avreverse open jaw return; I accept I could have explained this more fully in my repky.

      • Gordon says:

@Martyn – @BJ – Is very aware that this is a forum, as he frequently visits it giving very useful information and tips for travel, for which I am not the only one grateful for this (If you care to take the time to read them)
After all that’s what we are all on this platform for! I don’t see anything positive from you, your contribution is to criticise! There was advice given to the OP from @BJ which you decided to ignore for some reason!

  • Dave hughes says:

Just as a point I noticed Qatar do India for 55k Avios albeit more taxes but return trip for comfort and ease is miles cheaper still than BA for Avios and to and from most regional airports ?

  • Redhand says:

Our recent BA flight from Malaga to LHR was operated by FINNAIR. The aircraft was immaculate and the service excellent. If you havn’t flown them before, have no reservations about Finnair. I actually thought they were superior to BA.

  • Gosia44 says:

Does anyone know why not all Finnair routes are available for avios/RFS booking in the fall season on the BA website? There is no availability on BA to book HEL-WAW any day, any time between Nov 24 – Mar 25 but plenty of availability on Finnair website.

    • BJ says:

Warsaw is rpobably operated by NORRA not Finnair. BA does not show thus online but if you call BA CS they cab book it for you.

    • NorthernLass says:

      RFS is only on BA.

      • Gosia44 says:

Yes, it is operated by NORRA in the fall season. You can buy Finnair operated reward flights HEL-WAW on BA up until 26 October, just not after. So to book for November I will try calling BA CS. Thanks for the advise.

        • BJ says:

If the agent has a problem finding it tell them it comes up if they do the ‘all airlines’ search option.

          • Gosia44 says:

Thank you. Will do. I guess this problem will disappear when the avios transfer between BA and Finnair becomes available.

          • BJ says:

It would be better still if BA would just fix their IT. However, it’s important to note that if you are connecting to or from this flight with another Finnair flight such as BKK-HEL-WAW or WAW-HEL-HKG etc then you would want to combine your avios and book via AY+. This is because WAW is in zone 1 so the HEL-WAW- HEL connections would be free but they wouldn’t be if you book via BAEC.

          • Gosia44 says:

Actually no, I am interested in a direct HEL-WAW connection for family reasons 🙂

          • Gosia44 says:

Of course good to know about other options. I did not know that connecting via HEL to a zone 1 which includes WAW would be free.

  • Jane says:

WOuld appreciate some advice as we always just redeem on BA using avios & companion voucher but i am starting to think this might not always be wise.

We are considering visiting Bali and Lombok next year – what would be the best option using avios? We don’t mind having to change planes once or twice. We would be starting from London and are avios rich.

  • Rob B says:

Cancelled Phuket through Singapore on BA in favour of through Helsinki on Finnair. £1k refund, 241 refunded, HEL direct from EDI is easy. Can’t see this anomaly lasting forever. But thank you very much, HfP team….

    • BJ says:

It’s not an anomaly, it’s AY+ award chart adjusted for avios adoption. However, I too wonder how long substantial differencesvin reward pricing between carriers using avios can persist.

      • Dave hughes says:

Isn’t that similar to say qatars married segment pricing tho? When u look at it half the time the companion vouchers or Barclays cabin vouchers only bring ba in line with AY or QR without them , the only value I see anymore is extra availability with Amex voucher and cheap as chips redemptions on Iberia. Tbh Barclays vouchers are prob only worth the 7000 Avios alternative unless u have 500k plus Avios and want convenience. Starting to think just collect points as efficiently as possible and not chase the vouchers anymore with some of these options !

  • Aston100 says:

I accidentally booked Helsinki to Osaka.
Do you get the same 24 hour cooling off period with free cancellation? or is there something different due to travel between a second and third country?

    • TGLoyalty says:

Depends on who you booked via if they do 24 hour cooling off periods. Did you book via BA ? Then it should.

      • Aston100 says:

        Yeah BA.
The woman really didn’t want to listen to my questions and kept asking my card details.
I didn’t realise she was actually going to push the transaction through.

OK good to know I can cancel for free once I’ve thought properly about what I’ve just purchased.
